The river heart answered the borrowed tempo for six hours, and then it answered nothing at all.
The seizure returned at midday with reinforcements, plus this time the heart brought the north rift with it, both fronts flaring on the same failing clock.
"The river threat has exceeded what one holder can stabilize at five Rings," Aria reported over the spray. "The heart is fighting your tempo with its whole body now, not its habit."
Juna stood on the bank with four Wings open against the spray, feeding her solar rhythm into the stabilization from outside.
Even the feed could see the cost climbing on her.
"Five Rings is not enough to hold this," she said, not as a complaint but as weather. "And six would barely be, plus six is everything you own."
Which was the sentence the whole week had been building toward, plus everyone on both fronts heard it arrive.
The relay went quiet for a moment while an entire family on two battlefields adjusted its understanding of the arithmetic at the same time.
"Recall the north clone," Hajin said into the link. "Stand by for redistribution."
The word went down Ferra’s relay, plus the north front’s one-Ring support dissolved mid-brace.
Loccy’s shelter row stood alone on its own braced foundations, holding, for now, with her hammer planted like a flag.
The original body paid the returning bill in running water, took the recovered Ring onto his forearm, plus stood in the chamber with six Rings plus one decision.
"Three and three," he said into the link, addressing both fronts plus the family at once.
"I am dividing through the station’s prepared link. Ferra, I need you to talk me through the split now."
Ferra’s voice came back pitched for the precision of surgery.
"The link will carry the division if you assign through it, one body at a time, plus it will hurt in a way the boring tests never did."
"Juna’s count first," Hajin said, and gave the terms aloud with the water at his knees. "Three Rings to the river body, three Rings to the north body, no six-Ring force anywhere, and two sets of costs at the end instead of one."
"Counted, plus witnessed by everyone on both fronts," Juna said across the link. "Distribute."
He divided through the prepared link, and dividing himself was nothing like the silo tests.
The river body formed at his shoulder, three-Ring gold, already matching the heart’s stutter because it stood where he stood. The north body formed at the shelter row marker through the link’s far end, three-Ring gold, arriving with the memory of the morning’s bracing work already in its posture.
[ Division Executed Through Link Station ]
[ River Body: Three Rings ]
[ North Body: Three Rings ]
[ Original Consciousness: River Body ]
[ Duration At Three Assigned Rings: Recalculating ]
[ Preliminary Reading: Hours, Not Minutes ]
"One Ring bought you eight measured minutes," Ferra noted into the link station’s record, her charcoal sweeping.
"Three Rings are buying hours, which means the duration scales with the portions assigned. The whole biography gets a correction before the ink dries."
What nobody had written on any route sheet was what division felt like from inside.
Aria logged the sensation state without being asked, because records exist so that future failures can be anticipated rather than repeated.
It was not less than whole, plus it was not two separate men. One man wore two additional pairs of hands, both his, both busy, with the strange glassy clarity of reading two battlefields through one attention.
The river body leaned its three Rings into the heart’s convulsion, plus the heart leaned back.
The fight became exactly the exacting grind the arithmetic had promised.
Three Rings of stabilization held the heart at a stagger instead of a seizure.
Three Rings could not push it back to rhythm, could not punish the convulsion, plus could not do anything but stand in the water refusing to lose.
The distinction between refusing to lose plus winning had never been clearer in his entire career, plus it was educational in the way schoolyard defeats are educational.
Eleven minutes north, the north body worked the rift under Loccy’s calls, and its three Rings were the same deal. Enough to hold the eastern lip, enough to brace beside Loccy’s Burdenfall frames, not enough to close the rift or anchor the district alone.
[ LurkerNoMore: ] coverage versus concentration, live on two cameras. three rings holds either front, six rings wins either front, and he cannot have both at once
[ CringeSlayer91: ] the trade is visible in real time. this is the actual mechanics of the skill, not the fantasy version
"That is the whole finding," Ferra said quietly from the link station, her charcoal running.
"Division changes tactics instead of doubling strength. Three plus three is coverage, six is a hammer, plus the engine is making him choose coverage every single time."
The all-day choice cost exactly what honest coverage always costs.
The river heart spent the whole afternoon testing the three-Ring hold.
Every convulsion that six Rings would have punished, the river body absorbed, absorbed, absorbed, until Juna’s solar rhythm did half the stabilizing plus all of the shielding.
"Your left shoulder is sinking," she said once, in the third hour, from the bank.
"It knows," the river body said, in his voice, plus did not lift it, because lifting it cost tempo.
The north body took a foundation scrape in the fourth hour while holding a brace frame for Loccy to reset.
The scrape arrived in the shared attention like a paper cut inside a glove.
The north body bowed to Loccy when she released it at dusk, plus the river body felt the courtesy happen from eleven minutes away.
The feed replayed the paired footage all evening on a split, one side bowing, one side flinching at the same frame.
The whole country was learning to read one man standing in two places.
[ ShadowMage44: ] the river one FELT the north one bow. shared attention, bro. one man, two fronts, one feed trying to watch both
At dusk the river heart fell into an exhausted walk, not rhythm, but survivable, plus the north rift sat braced plus stable under Loccy’s frames.
Both deployed bodies came home together at the dusk bell. The north body dissolved through the link first, then the river body stood down at the bank, plus the two bills landed together like relatives visiting at the same hour.
Two bodies’ accumulated fatigue, two fronts’ sensory ledgers, one original’s long afternoon of being everywhere. Hajin sat down in the canal shallows with every Ring dark, plus he laughed until the laughing turned into shaking.
"Two sets of pain was the syllabus," he managed, to Juna, to Vella arriving at a run, to the whole unsympathetic arithmetic of the technique. "Today was four sets, plus I intend to invoice the engine."
"You held both fronts for a day," Vella said, gold out plus moving, sorting the treatable from the borrowed with a healer’s cold precision. "The city will invoice you back in gratitude, which I know you hate, so I will collect it for you."
Juna waded in and sat beside him in the shallows, armor plus all, letting the canal water take what it could.
"True thing," she said, over the shaking, invoking the clause while he was too tired to dodge.
"Being everywhere is lonelier than being one," Hajin said, looking at his own two hands while two fronts’ worth of aching settled into them. "Every part of me had company today except the part that decides."
She took one of the aching hands, plus held it, plus the deciding part noted the company anyway.
Twenty-eight skies stood over the Last City at nightfall, plus the technique’s biography gained Ferra’s third line.
"Three plus three covers everything, wins nothing, plus costs double."
"Choose coverage when the city needs standing, plus choose the hammer when the city needs winning. And the expedition must never confuse the two of them again."
