Vella got him onto a treatment table three hours after the Rings unlocked, which was two hours later than her orders had specified, plus the delay was its own diagnosis.

The man had spent those two extra hours holding an engine heart, which excused him medically plus changed nothing procedurally, a distinction she intended to bill him for.

"You held heart rhythm on six Rings through the dusk," she said, her gold moving over his forearms while she spoke.

"You did it with two stripes of phantom burn that I told you to bring me immediately."

"The heart does not take appointments," Hajin said from the table.

The room noted it was his first attempt at humor since the severing, plus filed it as a vital sign.

The treatment room had been cleared for the mapping, because Vella had spent the quiet hours between fronts preparing for this examination.

She worked now like a woman reading a map drawn on a living man.

"Everyone assumes the clone damage is real damage, because it arrives in real pathways."

Her gold spread down his forearm in slow, deliberate sheets while she spoke.

"The war table asked me to confirm it. I am going to disprove it instead, in front of witnesses, because the difference is the whole treatment."

The gold found the first stripe, the one matching the dead clone’s spear grip, plus followed it from wrist to elbow in silence while Aria recorded.

The room watched a healer read a wound that was not there, plus even the feed kept its commentary to a minimum, out of the respect that strange competence earns.

"Report what the gold feels, not what you feel," Vella said while she worked.

"What the gold itself feels, in its own terms."

"Pathway tension, elevated, bilateral," Aria read from the gold’s return.

"No structural damage, no burn residue, plus tissue that is intact but shouting."

"Now the second stripe."

The gold moved to the deeper line, the one matching the severing pull, while she asked the same question again.

"Tension, elevated, no damage," Aria confirmed. "The pathways are clenched around a memory of an injury that happened to tissue that never existed."

Vella sat back on her heels beside the table, plus delivered the finding to the room, the record, plus the man on the table with equal directness.

"The clone’s wounds are pain memories wearing the shapes of burns."

"The real pathway damage healed inside the lock period. What remains is the memory of a death, filed in living nerves, plus it will keep firing until the filing system accepts that the body survived."

"I can shorten the shock cycles," Vella said, gold settling into a slow rhythm over the stripes.

"I can teach your nerves the difference between remembering plus reliving, as I teach it to soldiers."

"It will work, because you are the best patient I have ever had at doing the work."

"What you cannot ask," she said before he asked it, "is for me to erase the memory, hasten a future lock, or make the next death cost less."

"The pain is the technique’s receipt, so I can help you carry it, plus I cannot return it."

"The treatment will take the whole evening," Vella said.

"He stays on the table, conscious, working the cycles with me. Nobody carries him anywhere, plus nothing dramatic happens in this room tonight."

"That last part," Juna said from the doorway, "is mine to enforce."

She came in carrying the terms ledger, an actual bound book now, which the family had gifted as a joke plus she had weaponized as a law code.

She took the chair beside the treatment table like a guard taking over a post.

"Vella treats, plus I hold the clause."

She set the bound ledger firmly on her knee, opening it to a fresh page.

"While the gold works, we are going to do the thing you have been dodging since the river."

"The boundaries," Hajin said, flat, because there was no dodging a woman with a book.

"The boundaries," Juna agreed.

"The Watcher’s custodians wrote rules before trusting the distributed work, plus you have written none. You deploy bodies on missions built from hold on plus we will see."

"So, before you risk another clone, you will state the mission rules, out loud, into the record, where I can hold you to them."

The treatment cycles moved down his forearms, pain memory plus gold, plus the room held its official breath.

"Rule one, mission," Hajin said finally, watching the gold work over his arms.

"Every clone is created with one stated objective, one priority inside that objective, plus one boundary it may not cross. All of it is stated at creation, not improvised in the field."

"Rule two, retreat. Every clone gets a prepared return point plus a dissolution trigger that I set at creation."

"If the trigger fires, the body comes home whether or not the work is finished, plus the work becomes the family’s problem, because the family is the load-bearing structure."

"Rule three, dissolution. No deployed body stays out in the world past its own usefulness."

"When its objective is done, or its boundaries are hit, it ends, plus I take the receipt without any heroic second deployment."

Juna wrote all three rules into the ledger in her clear campaign hand, then read them back to the room for witness.

"Mission, retreat, dissolution," she said, reading it back to the room.

"Stated, prepared, enforced. The next clone that dies, dies inside rules instead of inside hope, plus that is the difference between a technique plus a gambling habit."

The evening passed in slow treatment cycles, one after another. Gold plus pain memory, question plus answer, the nerves learning the difference between a death remembered plus a death happening.

The stripes quieted by degrees, from firing to aching, from aching to present, plus present, Vella said, was as far as medicine went.

She said it without apology, because the healers who promise erasure are the ones who run out of gold first.

"It stays present," she said, closing the gold into its rest.

"You will feel both deaths when it rains, when you are tired, plus when a spear sounds on stone. That is the permanent tax, plus I will not pretend it is small."

"It is not small," Hajin said, flexing both hands on the table, testing the quieted nerves. "It is honest, which the unconsciousness never was, plus honest costs are costs I can plan around."

"That sentence," Vella said, covering her instruments, "is why you get the good chair by the window in this clinic for the rest of your unnaturally long life."

The treatment room emptied toward midnight, all but Juna, who stayed to the end because the clause said the count continues until the man is home.

Home for this one now included rules he had written himself.

Outside, twenty-six skies stood over the Last City, plus somewhere beneath the seam, the enemy reviewed its own notes.

It found, to its growing irritation, that its opponent had responded to a killing by writing safety regulations.

Gods do not know what to do with a man like that, plus it had never needed to before.
