The battle day opened with the full count recited to the whole city, because Juna had decided this exam would be public, witnessed, plus binding.
"Four plus two," Hajin gave it, standing on the canal bank in the gray light.
"Four Rings with the original at the river section, driving the pressure. Two Rings with the clone at the north section, pinning beside Loccy."
"The sky section belongs to the specialists," he continued, naming them for the record like a roll call that mattered. "Rumi plus Nari on the exits, Ferra on the channel, Eirwen on the roots, Didi on the freeze, Vella at the seam, the Watcher plus Ash at the archive center."
"Mission, pin the core, with family survival as the priority, no pride fights at any section, plus the doctrine plus bell as the return."
Juna read the ledger line back, then dropped her hand, plus the city heard a family go to work.
The river section received the original first, because the river had a rhythm to match.
The section stood in its flooded chamber like a monument that had learned contempt.
Twenty paces of pre-foundational stone regarded four Rings plus one solar wolf woman with the entire patience of geology.
Four Rings plus Phase Lock slid onto the section’s motion, plus Juna’s four Wings spread behind him like a sunrise with intent.
The pressure was immediate, patient, plus rude by implication, because pressure at the river section was the bait the whole plan hung from.
The shared core felt the pressure arrive, consulted whatever ancient arithmetic it used, plus did what the plan predicted. It began relocating toward the quietest section, which was meant to be north.
The north front, however, was not quiet in the slightest.
The clone stood at the north chamber with two Rings bright, plus Loccy stood beside it with her hammer grounded.
Together they applied exactly enough pinning force to make the section feel crowded without ever making it feel threatened.
The difference between pressure plus threat was the morning’s whole craft, because threat triggered relocation, while pressure only triggered consideration.
"The core is moving," Aria reported from the center, reading the shell’s resonance like a ferryman reads water.
"Channel preference confirms every line of Ferra’s map. It is choosing the linked channel heading southbound toward the sky."
"Rumi," Ferra said into the relay, hands flat on her resonance table, voice pitched for surgery.
"It is entering your channel at this very moment, so close the top of it right now."
The twins worked the channel network like a pair of locksmiths closing a house for the night.
Rumi sealed the upper gates in sequence, with each closure arriving a half second before the core’s leading edge tested it.
The herd moved down the linked line exactly as the map had promised. The core moved faster as its options narrowed, which had also been in the map’s footnotes.
"It is taking the last junction," Aria called. "Nari, the exit is yours."
Nari stood at the final exit, the core’s last door out of the linked line, plus she waited, because closing a door early teaches the guest to jump windows.
The core arrived at speed, plus the exit stood open behind her for exactly one heartbeat, the oldest trap in the twins’ book, patience wearing a smile.
Then she closed it, plus the core was inside a channel with one direction left.
"Fixed," Nari said into the relay, one word, plus the word was load-bearing.
[ Core Route: Channeled ]
[ Exits: Fixed ]
[ Remaining Direction: Down, Toward The Sky Section ]
The sky section was the trap’s mouth, plus the specialists had spent the whole morning preparing it like a theater.
The wardens had evacuated the terraces above it, plus the bakeries had moved their ovens out of range.
Tessa’s line fed the cordon from two streets back, because sieges run on bread plus everyone in this city had learned that lesson by heart.
Eirwen’s roots held the entire sky chamber floor, twelve Shards awake, weaving a lattice under the section’s feet that hummed with old forest patience. Didi’s frost waited in the walls, five Shards of Sovereign cold ready to seize the section’s heart-transfer the instant the core crossed.
Vella stood at the seam with her gold pooled plus ready, because the plan’s one guaranteed bloodletting was here, at the moment of seizure.
The core poured into the sky section, the whole hostile presence of it, plus found the chamber waiting with theatrical courtesy.
Loccy crossed along the shared foundation to the sky chamber as soon as the core committed to that direction, leaving the two-Ring clone at the north section to maintain the lighter pin. The three sections’ foundation converged beneath the sky chamber, the only place where her burden could touch all of them.
"Now," Didi said.
Five Shards of frost seized the sky section’s transfer lattice at once, plus the section’s ability to relocate died mid-breath. The core pushed against the frozen transfer, found Eirwen’s lattice accepting the overflow into rooted ground, plus pushed harder.
The whole shell began audibly straining against the pin then. A twenty-Shard-class body, pinned in three places, plus a core with nowhere left to be.

[ Root Lattice: Absorbing Overflow ]
[ Shell Integrity: Straining ]
"It will try the sky line," Aria warned next.
"The sections share a rhythm through the upper channel. If the sky line opens, the core can ride the rhythm back to any section it likes."
The sky line was Juna’s, plus Juna had been waiting all morning for her word in the relay.
"Cutting now," she said, from the river bank, four Wings folding into one bright edge.
Her Wing crossed the upper channel in a single solar stroke.
The shared rhythm of the three sections severed cleanly, no different from a metronome she had been raised cutting.
[ Shared Sky Line: Severed ]
[ Section Rhythm: Broken ]
[ Core Mobility: Zero ]
The Split Custodian stood pinned for the first time in its long existence.
One structure in three districts, frozen at the heart, rooted at the floor, cut from its own rhythm.
Its core stood fully present in the sky section, with nowhere left to run.
Every viewer on two planets watched the trap close, plus the chat went silent the way crowds go silent before the diver leaves the board.
Nineteen skies stood over the pinned three-faced structure by then, plus not one single one of them felt spendable anymore.
"Now the arithmetic," Aria said quietly, to the family alone.
"The kill requires six-Ring force. The original currently holds four at the river, plus the clone holds two at the north."
"To reform six," Ferra said, completing the thought for the table, "the clone must dissolve, plus the Rings must travel home through the thirty-second delay."
"The pinned core must be held by everyone else, alone, for exactly that long."
The whole planning table had known this moment was coming all along. The whole plan was built for it, the way a key is built for its specific lock.
"The family holds the core," Hajin said across the relay, to all of them, with the bell in his hand.
"Thirty seconds, without me, against a pinned god, which is the exam waiting inside the exam."
"Then stop narrating plus ring it," Loccy said, from the north front, hammer grounded, grinning at the clone beside her.
Hajin rang the bell himself, dissolved his own second body entirely without ceremony, plus the thirty seconds of the true exam officially began.
The family heard him leave the air, each in their own way, plus none of them looked up.
Looking up is for audiences, plus they were the load-bearing structure now.
