The pups were already there, curled up together on their parents’ bed, fast asleep.
Bryan Oliver and little Princess Charlotte had decorated their parents’ chamber with paintings of their family together. One showed Brandon holding Emma tightly, as if he would never let her go. Another showed all of them together, with Emma holding Brandon just as tightly. The last one caught them completely off guard. It showed Brandon kissing Emma, and the moment they saw it, they both burst out laughing, holding their stomachs.
"Moonheart, I hope it’s not what I’m thinking."
They looked at each other, already figuring out what had happened.
Bryan Oliver and little Princess Lottie now had access to their chamber, and apparently, they had started sneaking in whenever their parents were asleep just to make sure they were still there.
"Where could they be?" Emma asked, glancing around the chamber.
Brandon slowly looked around the room before dramatically pointing toward the space beneath the bedcovers. At first glance, no one would have guessed the pups were hiding there.
That was all it took.
The pups burst into laughter, lifting their heads from beneath the thick bedsheet, their faces bright with amusement.
"Bryan Oliver, did you send a request before coming into our chamber?" Emma asked, folding her arms as she tried to look stern.
"I sent one, but no one answered," Bryan replied in an innocent voice. "I was worried about you, so I came to check on you guys. I just wanted to be sure you were still here."
Brandon pressed his lips together, trying not to laugh.
"What happened the moment you came in?" he asked.
Bryan looked between his parents before answering. "You were fast asleep, holding each other like one of you was going to disappear."
Emma and Brandon looked at each other before laughing again.
Emma finally relaxed. For a moment, she had been worried that Bryan might have walked in while they were too caught up in each other to notice anything around them, but apparently, all he had seen was his parents sleeping peacefully in each other’s arms.
"Father, Mother," Charlotte giggled as she handed them another painting. This time, Emma’s belly was big.
"Why is my belly big?" Emma asked, looking at the painting with a puzzled expression.
"I want another princess," Charlotte said confidently.
Brandon and Emma glanced at each other, both trying not to laugh.
"Zoey’s another princess. I want another prince," Bryan argued, shaking his head.
"But Zoey’s Aunt Elara’s daughter," Charlotte replied.
"Prince."
"No, princess."
They continued arguing until their disagreement turned into playful laughter, with both pups trying to convince each other that their choice was the better one.
"Lottie is right. We need another princess," Brandon said, joining the argument just to tease Bryan.
"No, prince," Bryan immediately protested.
Brandon and Emma both laughed as the pups continued their playful argument.
Meanwhile, Samuel had died by suicide in the dungeon.
Six months had passed since King Eldric’s death. Every newspaper, Vision Hearth station, and government network had repeated the same story, reporting on the changes Brandon had made and the calm that had gradually returned to the kingdom.
The kingdom was finally at peace.
Only Brandon knew what he had sacrificed for that peace.
Inside the Royal Palace, the weekly cabinet meeting was underway. Ministers sat around the long table while reports were brought forward, each one reflecting the changes taking place across the kingdom.
"The latest approval ratings have improved," Minister Roland reported. "Most citizens now support Brandon’s new administration, and the public response has been better than we expected."
Brandon leaned back in his chair, listening carefully before turning his attention to another matter.
"And the exiled packs?"
"Our intelligence agencies say they’re ready to return home," Roland replied. "We’ve been working with their representatives over the past few days, and most of them are prepared to come back once the final arrangements are completed."
Brandon smiled and gave a small nod. "Excellent. Let them know the kingdom is ready to welcome them home."
Before the meeting could continue, the chamber doors suddenly opened, and a palace secretary hurried inside. His face was pale, and the hurried movement immediately caught everyone’s attention.
"My High Alpha King," he said, trying to steady his breathing.
Brandon frowned as he looked up from the table. "What is it?"
The secretary swallowed nervously before answering.
"Every national Vision Hearth network has been interrupted. The broadcast was running normally a moment ago, and then the signal disappeared."
Brandon straightened in his chair. "What?"
"Our official broadcast has been replaced," the secretary said. "We’re trying to restore it, but we haven’t been able to identify where the new signal is coming from."
Tom pushed his chair back and rose to his feet, his expression turning serious as he listened.
"It’s not simply a replacement," he said. "People still have doubts about whether the Alpha King has truly returned. If our Alpha goes on the air and speaks directly to the kingdom, they’ll hear the truth from him instead of whatever message someone is trying to send."
The room fell quiet as everyone looked toward Brandon.
He slowly rose from his chair and straightened his jacket.
"Alright," he said. "Put me on the air."
The large screen mounted on the conference chamber wall suddenly flickered, causing everyone around the table to look up. The royal emblem disappeared, and a colorful background replaced it before the image shifted again.
Then a familiar face came into view.
The chamber fell silent.
Alpha King Brandon Oliver Frostbane sat in a dimly lit chamber, wearing a dark suit instead of military clothing. His expression was calm, and his eyes remained fixed on the camera as though he were looking directly at every person watching him.
The commander stared at the screen with a puzzled expression. "Our Alpha..."
Brandon spoke before anyone could say anything else.
"Citizens of Santorini, my name is Brandon Oliver Frostbane."
Across the kingdom, Vision Hearths, personal devices, computers, and public information screens displayed the same broadcast. People stopped in the streets to stare at the screens, conversations faded inside shops, and government employees turned away from their desks as Brandon’s face appeared before them.
"He is really alive..." someone whispered.
Brandon continued without changing his expression.
"For a few winters, you were told that I abandoned this kingdom. That was a lie."
Inside the palace, Luna Alexandra turned sharply toward her communications director.
"Put him on the news line. The Alpha King is on the air right now!"
"We’re trying, My High Luna," the communications director replied as the technicians hurried between their stations, typing commands into their computers and working to bring the broadcast onto the palace network.
After several tense moments, the main palace screens switched to the live feed.
Brandon calmly held up a document for the camera.
"This is a financial authorization bearing Samuel’s official seal. It was issued weeks before King Eldric’s death and approved payments to a supplier that never existed."
A second document appeared on the screen beside him.
"This is a forensic report proving that traces of a rare toxin were found in King Eldric’s preserved alchemist samples."
The ministers looked at one another, their earlier confidence fading as they watched the evidence appear before them.
Brandon revealed another file and held it where the camera could clearly capture the records.
"And these are records showing that witnesses connected to the investigation disappeared shortly after giving their statements."
Silence filled the palace conference chamber.
Alexandra watched the screen with a proud smile.
"Good," she murmured. "Soon the rightful heir will take over the throne."
Brandon looked directly into the camera once more, his hands lowering slowly as he prepared to address the kingdom again.
"I am not asking you to believe me."
He paused, allowing his words to settle before continuing.
"I am asking you to support this new administration for a peaceful future for our pups and the people of this kingdom."
His voice remained measured as he looked into the camera.
"No kingdom can call itself just when a king is killed, witnesses disappear, and questions are answered with fear."
Across the nation, citizens exchanged uneasy glances as the broadcast ended. The official story they had heard for months no longer seemed unquestionable, especially after Brandon had placed documents and evidence before them.
Brandon had never called for violence or encouraged rebellion. He had asked for one thing: their support as he worked to build a better kingdom.
The broadcast ended with a single sentence displayed across every screen.
Justice begins with the truth.
The image vanished.
Inside the palace, no one spoke for several seconds. Luna Alexandra slowly turned toward her ministers, and the tension that had filled the room began to give way to excitement. Several faces around the table were already beaming, while others quietly clapped their hands as the weight of what Brandon had accomplished began to sink in.
"Let’s celebrate Brandon’s new administration," Alexandra said, turning toward the others.
"Alright, Luna," several voices replied.
Ashley and the other regents were already busy with the conference reports they had gathered, sorting through the documents as they prepared for the coronation of the new king.
One of the ministers looked down at the reports in his hands before speaking. "The council will likely request an independent review of the evidence."
Beta Elton stared at the screen in disbelief, slowly shaking his head.
"I didn’t know his mission was possible," he admitted. "Brandon is indeed a strategist."
Even some of the officials who had once underestimated him were beginning to understand what he was capable of, and that realization left more than a few of them uneasy.
Far beneath the conference hall, Brandon switched off the camera.
Nelson smiled as he leaned back in his chair. "You just shook the entire kingdom."
Brandon remained calm. He reached for another sealed folder lying on the table and placed it in front of him.
"This isn’t the end."
He rested his hand on the folder for a moment before adding, "It has only begun."
Emma looked at him. "What’s in that file?"
Brandon’s eyes settled on the royal palace marked on the digital map in front of them.
"The evidence that will destroy Samuel’s reign."
He closed the folder carefully and pushed it back toward himself.
"This war wasn’t fought with bullets."
He looked at Emma, then at Nelson.
"It was fought with facts."
And for the first time since Samuel stole the throne, the battle for the kingdom had truly begun.
