Chapter 145: Chapter 145: Lock Her Up

It was almost 8:00 PM by the time they got back to the guesthouse.

You could still see the path outside, but the room was incredibly dim.

Jiang Moli casually pulled the light switch. The switch clicked, but the light didn’t turn on.

"Is it a power outage, or did the filament burn out?"

"It must be an outage. I’ll go light a candle."

After lighting the candle, Lu Cheng turned around to see Jiang Moli had gone out onto the balcony. She was standing motionless, her head tilted back.

He curiously walked over, holding the candle. "What are you looking at?"

"There are so many stars tonight. It’s beautiful."

Lu Cheng followed her gaze upward. The deep gray sky was filled with twinkling specks of light.

’He’d seen far more brilliant and vast starry skies than this.’

’It wasn’t anything special, really.’

’But his wife liked looking at them, so he’d look with her.’

He blew out the candle and tilted his head back to gaze at the night sky.

"Lu Cheng, how about I sing you a song from my home?"

Lu Cheng’s attention was so captivated by the word "sing" that he completely missed the hidden meaning in Jiang Moli’s words.

"Okay."

Jiang Moli began to sing softly, "The stars in the sky don’t speak, the children on the ground miss their mothers... Every night I remember my mother’s words, the glistening tears, a lupin flower..."

Before she could finish, Lu Cheng pulled her into his arms.

A warm kiss landed on the crown of her head, his reassuring presence enveloping her. "Missing your mom?"

"Mhm."

Lu Cheng whispered in her ear, "When I’m on leave and we go back, how about I go with you to see our mom?"

Jiang Moli replied, "You can’t go to that place."

Lu Cheng lowered his gaze. "Can’t you just take me?"

"It’s hard to explain."

"Then don’t."

Lu Cheng didn’t dwell on it, because he didn’t see it as a problem.

’How hard could it be to visit his mother-in-law’s grave?’

He was, however, contemplating something else. "Moli, have you ever thought about staying here with me as a military spouse?"

"I’ve thought about it."

"Really? Is it because you’ve discovered my good qualities after these past few days? Or have you grown to like it here and want to stay and live with me?"

Jiang Moli blinked. "I was just saying."

Not wanting to see the disappointment on his face, she averted her gaze and looked into the distance.

After a brief silence, a warm kiss landed beside her earlobe.

"It’s good that you’re staying at home, too. I can’t always look after you here. We often go out on missions, and it’s common to be gone for three to five days, or even half a month."

Jiang Moli asked him, "Will you be stationed here forever?"

"I might get transferred somewhere else in the future. It depends on the organization’s arrangements."

Lu Cheng asked about the song she had just sung. "What’s the title? I’ve never heard it before."

Jiang Moli: "Just something I hummed."

"I think it’s beautiful, and you sing beautifully. The school doesn’t have a music teacher right now. How about you fill in for a bit?"

"But I’m only here for a few days."

"One day is better than none. Just teaching them this one song would be great."

’If he couldn’t keep his wife here, keeping the song she sang was the next best thing.’

Gazing at the ever-deepening starry sky, Jiang Moli finally remembered that little brother of hers. "How has Xiao Peng been lately? Can I see him before I leave?"

"You don’t have to wait that long. The new recruits get one day off after every six days of training. I’ll get him then and take you both for a walk around town."

Jiang Moli nodded. "Okay."

...

"Dismissed!"

Hearing the order, the new recruits shot off toward the barracks like wild horses set free.

’Time to eat!’

For new recruits in their late teens who were still growing and undergoing intense training every day, mealtime was undoubtedly the happiest, most blissful part of the day.

Jiang Peng kept his back hunched and his head down, blending in with his comrades.

"Jiang Peng!"

Hearing his squad leader shout from behind, Jiang Peng pretended not to hear and ran even faster.

"Jiang Peng, you son of a bitch, still running? Are you disobeying a military order?"

Seeing all his comrades turn to look at him, Jiang Peng reluctantly stopped.

"Squad Leader, what is it?"

"Don’t play dumb with me. You still have two extra laps to run!"

Jiang Peng clutched his stomach and put on a pitiful act. "I’m so hungry my heart’s fluttering. I can’t run. Can I run after I eat?"

Liu Jinlong’s eyes widened as he roared, "No! No food until you’re finished! Get running!"

Jiang Peng got angry. "Everyone else who was late only got punished for one day. Why do I get six? You think I’m an easy target, don’t you?"

"Those are the Commander’s orders. If you have a problem, you can take it up with the Commander, but you have to finish today’s extra training first."

"To hell with him!"

Liu Jinlong pointed at him. "Cursing. That’s a one-point deduction from your conduct score!"

"..."

Not far away, Lu Cheng and the commander of the new recruit regiment, Yang Xinjun, were watching the training grounds.

"The kid’s physical condition is pretty good. His stamina and endurance are near the top. He’s just lazy, loves to play tricks, and is afraid of hardship."

Yang Xinjun’s assessment of Jiang Peng was more or less what Lu Cheng had figured.

From the very first glance, he had seen that Jiang Peng was promising material.

After Jiang Peng became his brother-in-law, he decided he had to cultivate him properly.

"Commander Yang, I’m leaving this kid to you. I’ll owe you one for this."

"Not a problem."

After finishing his two extra laps, Jiang Peng lifted the hem of his shirt to wipe his sweat as he headed back to the barracks.

As he walked, he noticed the person up ahead looked an awful lot like his brother-in-law.

He looked closer, and it really was his brother-in-law!

"Brother-in-law!"

Jiang Peng dropped into a slide, grabbing Lu Cheng’s leg and bawling his eyes out, snot and tears everywhere.

"Brother-in-law, those sons of bitches are bullying me every day! You have to stand up for me!"

Lu Cheng pulled him up, his expression serious. "What’s going on? Tell me."

Jiang Peng told Lu Cheng all about his daily extra training.

When he was done, Lu Cheng handed him two eggs.

Jiang Peng’s eyes lit up. "Eggs? For me?"

"Eat up. Your sister misses you. She said she’ll take you into town for some good food on your day off."

Jiang Peng gobbled down the eggs, nodding his head like a chicken pecking at rice.

’The eggs were so delicious! One bite filled him with energy. Forget two laps, he could run another ten!’

Lu Cheng watched him and cleared his throat. "Xiao Peng, can you think of any way to make your sister stay at the base a little longer?"

Jiang Peng blinked. "Just lock her up and don’t let her leave."

"..."

...

After breakfast, Lu Tingting returned to the dorm. Seeing Jiang Qing eating at the small dining table, she strode forward and flipped it over.

Jiang Qing’s lunchbox, which she had only taken two bites from, went CLATTERING to the floor.

"Lu Tingting, are you crazy!?"

Lu Tingting laughed maliciously. "That’s right, I am crazy. The sight of you makes me want to go crazy. If you can’t stand it, then get the hell out. Just get out of my sight."

Although she was furious, Jiang Qing swallowed her anger, picked up her lunchbox from the floor, and prepared to leave.

"Wait. Clean up this mess on the floor. It looks disgusting, like dog shit!"

Jiang Qing spun around, furious. "Lu Tingting, don’t go too far! Do you really think I’m afraid of you?"

"Oh, you feel wronged now? I’m way more wronged than you are! If I hadn’t taken the fall for you, I never would have come here to be some damn volunteer teacher!"

Hearing the real reason Lu Tingting had come to Menghai, Jiang Qing was filled with anger and regret.

’If I had known I’d provoke a psycho like Lu Tingting, I would have died before telling that lie to Qiao Wenjing.’

’With her education and abilities, plus her status as the battalion commander’s sister-in-law, she could have easily applied for a teaching position on the base. She never needed to use Qiao Wenjing’s connections to get in through the back door.’

But it was too late to say any of that now.

To avoid another conflict with Lu Tingting, Jiang Qing could only try to stay out of the dorm as much as possible.

She had nowhere else to go, so she could only head to Feng Meihua’s place.

Not long after she left, she ran into a military family member she knew.

Jiang Qing greeted the person as usual, but they just gave her a strange, distant look and walked away.

Jiang Qing felt as if she’d been slapped across the face. The humiliation made her eyes turn red.
