An Accidental Military Marriage

Chapter 85: An Unacquainted Couple

Chapter 85: Chapter 85: An Unacquainted Couple

Inside the envelope were three photographs and a sheet of letter paper.

Lu Cheng picked up the photos first. The first was a solo picture of his wife.

In the photo, his wife wore a red dress. With red lips and pearly teeth, her smile bloomed like a flower.

Looking at the picture, Lu Cheng’s eyes gradually moistened, but the corners of his mouth couldn’t help but curve upward.

’So this is how my wife was dressed on our wedding day.’

The top was one they had bought together on the third floor of the department store, and the skirt was made from floral fabric they’d picked out on the first floor.

Although this wedding outfit didn’t look like what other brides wore, it looked truly beautiful on his wife.

The second photo showed his wife kneeling before his parents to serve them tea.

Beside her was an empty ceremonial cushion—the spot where he should have been.

Lu Cheng raised a hand to press the corner of his eye, then looked at the last photo.

The last one was a family portrait. His parents were seated in the front, while his wife and two sisters-in-law stood in a row behind them.

His wedding date had been set in a hurry, so his two older brothers hadn’t been able to make it back in time.

After looking through the photos, Lu Cheng picked up the letter, his heart pounding with excitement as he unfolded it.

But when he saw its contents, his upturned smile immediately fell.

The letter contained only one sentence: "Have you thought things over?"

Staring at that one line, he read it over and over ten times before his face went cold. He folded the letter and stuffed it back into the envelope.

’She sent a letter from so far away just to write this one sentence? Does she really have nothing else to say to me?’

’And she’s asking if I’ve thought things over? What is there for me to think over?’

’I’m not getting a divorce. Not even if I die.’

He was furious, but his hand uncontrollably reached for the photo of his wife on the desk.

Just as he was gazing at it intently, a knock sounded at the door.

As Lu Cheng stood up, he instinctively pulled open a drawer and put the photos inside.

Subconsciously, he didn’t want outsiders to see his wife’s picture.

It was like a precious treasure he wanted to keep all to himself.

Opening the door, he found a young, pretty female soldier with ear-length hair standing outside.

Recognizing the military doctor, Qiao Wenjing, Lu Cheng spoke. "Comrade Qiao, is something wrong?"

Qiao Wenjing was taken aback by his gaunt, scruffy appearance; he almost looked like a wild man.

After all, the usual Lu Cheng was tall and handsome, with sharp brows and bright eyes.

But she quickly recovered, a look of concern and heartache in her eyes.

"Camp Commander Lu, you’ve worked so hard on this disaster relief mission. I made some food to help you regain your strength."

As she spoke, she offered the aluminum lunch box in her hands to Lu Cheng.

"Comrade Qiao, I’m already married. Please don’t bring me things anymore. It won’t look good if people see."

With that, he shut the door.

A moment later, the knocking resumed.

Lu Cheng opened the door, and before he could refuse again, Qiao Wenjing spoke first.

"Camp Commander Lu, I respect your abilities and admire your character even more. In my heart, you are a hero, and you’re the one who saved my life. Everything I do is out of gratitude to my savior. Also, I sincerely wish you and your wife happiness."

After speaking, Qiao Wenjing shoved the lunch box into his hands and ran off.

Lu Cheng didn’t chase after her. He casually tossed the lunch box to a few of his subordinates who were watching the commotion from the next dorm room and went back inside.

The lunch box, which Lu Cheng hadn’t even glanced at, was excitedly snatched up by the soldiers.

"I want some!"

"Let me have a bite!"

Inside the lunch box, besides a few golden-brown potato patties, was a piece of ham the size of an adult’s fist.

Supplies were extremely scarce in the mountainous region. The soldiers only got one liang of pork each per month, and their stomachs were practically devoid of fat.

Seeing such a large piece of meat, they all scrambled for it like a pack of mad dogs.

"This smells amazing."

A young soldier who got a piece of meat had a look of pure bliss on his face, wondering why Lu Cheng wasn’t dating Qiao Wenjing.

In his eyes, Qiao Wenjing came from a good family, was beautiful, had a great personality, and a noble profession—she was practically a perfect goddess.

"Are you stupid? If Camp Commander Lu really got together with Doctor Qiao, we’d be left out in the cold. You want to eat meat? You can eat dirt!"

This wasn’t the first time Qiao Wenjing had brought Lu Cheng a lunch box.

When Lu Cheng refused to take it, she would just leave it at his door.

Lu Cheng wouldn’t eat it himself, but he didn’t want to waste food either, so it always ended up being a treat for his subordinates.

"Hey, don’t talk nonsense. Camp Commander Lu already has a wife. Don’t run your mouths and disrupt his family’s harmony."

"For real? Do you guys believe it? I don’t."

"I don’t believe it either. Not unless Camp Commander Lu brings his wife here for us to see."

"Exactly."

It’s no wonder the soldiers didn’t believe Lu Cheng was married.

Over the years, there had been more outstanding female comrades from the Arts Troupe, the Communications Platoon, and the Medical Company who admired Lu Cheng than you could count on both hands and feet.

But Lu Cheng never gave any of them a second glance. He’d even walk the other way to avoid a female dog.

Would a man more ascetic than a monk really get married?

"You still don’t believe it? How about this: if Camp Commander Lu really is married, you guys can do my laundry and cleaning for the month. How about it?"

"Deal!"

Lu Cheng had no idea his men were betting on him. However, Qiao Wenjing’s reaction made him realize how terrible he looked.

His wife was a woman, too. She probably disliked scruffy men just like Qiao Wenjing did.

He scrubbed himself from head to toe with soap twice, shaved his beard, changed into a clean, crisp military uniform, put on his service cap, and only then did he head out.

As he walked, soldiers along the way saluted and greeted him.

"Camp Commander Lu."

Lu Cheng nodded at the saluting soldiers and strode briskly out of the barracks.

Once he was a good distance away, a few soldiers huddled together, their heads close. "Did you guys smell that? The smell of soap on Camp Commander Lu is so strong."

Supplies were scarce in the army. A regular soldier only got a piece of soap the size of an egg every three months, so they usually used it very sparingly.

"Besides, didn’t you notice? Camp Commander Lu looks especially sharp today."

"There’s an awards ceremony tonight. Of course he’s got to look sharp."

Makes sense.

After greeting the guard, Lu Cheng entered the regimental commander’s office.

Passing a full-length mirror, he subconsciously stopped to straighten his uniform before walking over to the telephone.

An Hui and Ma Hongmei were in the yard, picking bugs off the vegetables in the garden.

Jiang Moli was sitting alone on the sofa practicing her embroidery—not because she had turned over a new leaf and wanted to be a virtuous wife, but purely out of boredom.

When she heard the phone ring, she picked it up casually. "Hello, who are you looking for?"

On the other end of the line, Lu Cheng’s breath hitched as he heard the sweet, soft voice from the receiver.

’It’s my wife!’

"It’s me."

"Who’s ’me’?"

"Your husband."

Jiang Moli: !

She had actually recognized his voice from his first reply; her mouth just moved faster than her brain.

"Hold on, Mom’s outside. I’ll go get her."

"I’m not looking for her. I’m looking for you."

"Oh. You need something?"

Jiang Moli’s question came out a little dry.

They were husband and wife, but they didn’t know each other very well. After all, she didn’t even know how many abs he had.

"I received the letter and saw the photos. They’re very beautiful."

"Jiang Xiaoguang took the pictures. I’ll pass your compliment on to him."

"I wasn’t talking about him. I was talking about the person in the photos."

"You’ve got good taste, then."

Lu Cheng chuckled.

It was a deep sound that seemed to rumble from his chest, making Jiang Moli’s eardrums tingle.

"So, you saw the letter?"

"I saw it."

Hearing his voice shift from deep and rumbling to sullen, Jiang Moli was pleased.
