Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Severing Ties

Jiang Moli replied, "They just want money, don’t they? We’ll just give it to them."

This was actually what Jiang Dahai was thinking, too—to use money to get rid of the three Ruan brothers.

He didn’t want them to actually make a scene at the military district gates and cause trouble for his daughter’s father-in-law.

He’d been worried his daughter wouldn’t agree and had a whole persuasive speech prepared, but unexpectedly, she thought the exact same thing.

This was great!

He quickly pulled Jiang Moli over to the three Ruan brothers. "Moli and I have discussed it. We will temporarily cover the money you borrowed from the village. Consider it a loan from us—you’ll have to pay it back in the future."

Ruan Fuguo agreed without a second thought.

’I’ll get the money first,’ he thought. ’Whether I pay it back is a problem for later.’

"The creditors are still blocking our doors back home. We have to take the money back today."

"Don’t be hasty. First, make a list of the creditors’ names and the amounts you owe so I know how much money to prepare."

Jiang Dahai went back into the factory to get a pen and paper.

The people at the factory were no strangers to Ruan Fuguo and his two brothers.

After all, they were the ones who had caused such a scene that the factory took back the Jiang family’s house.

It had only been quiet for a few days, and now they were back again.

"Mr. Jiang, why are your brothers-in-law here again? What do they want this time?"

"It’s nothing, it’s nothing."

But Jiang Dahai’s dismissive response was hardly enough to placate the factory workers’ curiosity.

After Jiang Dahai went out with the pen and paper, a few workers took the opportunity, while their supervisor was away, to slack off and follow him out to watch the drama unfold.

The three Ruan brothers did as Jiang Moli asked, writing down all their creditors and the amounts owed on the paper.

Jiang Moli looked over the list and tallied the amounts. "Eldest Uncle, your total is 158. Second Uncle, you owe 137. And Third Uncle, you owe 109. Are you sure this is everything? Nothing’s been left out? Don’t wait until I have the money ready to tell me it’s not enough."

The three brothers exchanged a look.

Ruan Fuguo quickly added, "I just remembered, there are two more I didn’t write down. One is for six, and the other is for ten."

Ruan Fuqiang and Ruan Fushun followed his example and added several more debts of their own.

Jiang Moli didn’t question them, simply noting down each addition on the paper.

Jiang Dahai’s face turned livid.

He clearly remembered the amounts the three Ruan brothers had paid back to *him*: 135, 124, and 80.

He refused to believe the three brothers hadn’t saved a single cent after all these years.

And even taking a huge leap of faith—assuming all the money they had repaid him was borrowed from the villagers—the amounts should still match what he was repaid.

But the debts they were claiming now were all dozens of yuan higher.

’They’re really treating me like a complete sucker!’

Just as Jiang Dahai was seething, he heard Jiang Moli say to him, "Dad, is the factory director here? If not, any other manager will do. Please ask them to come out and act as a witness."

Before Jiang Dahai could answer, one of the onlookers from the factory chimed in, "Factory Director Yang is here! I’ll go get him!"

Yang Zhigang came out quickly.

He immediately greeted Jiang Moli with a smile. "Moli, I haven’t seen you around the factory in ages. What have you been busy with?"

In the past, Yang Zhigang wouldn’t have given Jiang Moli the time of day.

But times had changed.

Her status as a battalion commander’s wife alone was not to be underestimated, to say nothing of the fact that she had a high-ranking official for a father-in-law.

Even if he wasn’t going to suck up to her, he certainly wouldn’t dare to offend her.

For a veteran of bureaucracy like Yang Zhigang, navigating the complexities of human relationships was second nature.

"Factory Director Yang, I need to borrow a few minutes of your time. I need you to be a witness for something."

"No problem. Go ahead."

Jiang Moli looked at the three Ruan brothers. "I can lend you the money you need, but I have one condition. Once you take this money, the Jiang and Ruan families will sever all ties from this day forward. Even if you’re on your deathbeds, do us a favor and walk a little further away. Don’t die on the Jiang family’s doorstep. If you don’t agree, then the loan is off the table. You can go and make a scene wherever you like. The reform farms are short on able-bodied men right now; you lot would fit right in."

Ruan Fuguo agreed to sever ties with barely a moment’s thought.

When they came into the city today, they hadn’t held out much hope. They would have been satisfied to borrow even thirty or fifty yuan to get by.

They never expected Jiang Moli to be so agreeable, willing to give them whatever amount they named.

His only regret was that he had asked for too little.

’I should have asked for more.’

In front of Yang Zhigang and the factory workers, Ruan Fuguo wrote a declaration severing their kinship, which he, Ruan Fuqiang, and Ruan Fushun all signed and marked with their fingerprints.

After taking the declaration, Jiang Moli said to the three men, "I’ll have to go home and get the money together. I’ll bring it to you tomorrow."

Of course, the three brothers refused. They had been tricked by Jiang Moli before and worried she was just playing them again.

"In front of Factory Director Yang, I promise that I will lend you this money tomorrow. If I go back on my word, the factory can fire my dad."

Jiang Dahai: !!!

Yang Zhigang was also taken aback. "Moli, you can’t joke about something like this."

Jiang Moli said, "I’m not joking. Uncles, with Factory Director Yang and all these workers as witnesses, what do you have to be afraid of?"

Since Jiang Moli dared to stake Jiang Dahai’s job as collateral, with the factory director himself as a witness, Ruan Fuguo had no reason to feel uneasy.

"Fine, Moli. We’ll trust you one more time. But if we don’t see the money by sunset tomorrow, don’t blame us for what happens next."

"Mhm, go home and wait."

After sending the three Ruan brothers on their way, Jiang Moli prepared to head home as well.

The summer sun was like a great ball of fire, hot enough to make your head steam.

"Thank you for your trouble, Factory Director Yang. Dad, you should get back to work. I’m leaving now."

Jiang Dahai looked like he wanted to say something, but held his tongue. In the end, he just nodded and let her leave.

Even though he was bursting with questions, he had already missed enough work for one day. Besides, with the factory director and other workers around, it wasn’t a good time to ask.

Yang Zhigang shooed the gawking workers back into the factory, then turned to the worried-looking Jiang Dahai and offered a casual word of comfort.

"Jiang, don’t you worry too much. If you run into any trouble, you can always talk to the factory."

"Thank you for your concern, Factory Director Yang."

Jiang Dahai wasn’t actually worried about losing his job. While he had no power to influence matters at work, he was confident he could scrape the money together.

If his daughter didn’t bring the money tomorrow, he would just have to figure out a way to cover it himself.

...

With the promise of money, the three Ruan brothers’ steps were much lighter on their way back, the furrows in their brows smoothed out.

But the money wasn’t in their hands yet, and Ruan Fuqiang couldn’t help but feel a little uncertain.

"Moli isn’t tricking us this time, is she? What if she doesn’t bring the money tomorrow?"

Ruan Fuguo snorted. "She wouldn’t dare. We have a factory director as our witness. Not unless Jiang Dahai really doesn’t want his job anymore!"

Ruan Fushun sounded somewhat regretful. "We signed that declaration to sever ties. If we run into trouble in the future, we won’t be able to count on Dahai anymore."

Ruan Fuguo’s expression was grim. "We’ll worry about the future when it comes. Let’s get through this first."

When the three brothers returned to their village, they told their creditors that Jiang Moli had agreed to lend them the money.

No one doubted them. After all, the Ruan family had taken plenty of money from the Jiang family over the years. What was one more day of waiting?

But word of Jiang Moli staking Jiang Dahai’s job as collateral sparked a flurry of gossip.

Behind her back, they all cursed Jiang Moli as a troublemaker.

She’d already caused her family to lose their house, and she still hadn’t learned her lesson. Now she was stirring up trouble with her own father’s job.

When An Hui learned that Jiang Moli had agreed to lend money to her uncles, she couldn’t help but chide her. "What was the point of all that? You went to so much trouble to trick them into paying back the money, and now you’re just lending it back to them. Doesn’t that mean your dad lost his house for nothing?"

"I may not have earned any money, but it wasn’t all for nothing," Jiang Moli said, perfectly at ease. "At the very least, it was tiring."

An Hui was left speechless.

Lu Deyao watched Jiang Moli, secretly suspecting that she was up to something again.

After spending this much time with her, he had come to understand his daughter-in-law to a certain extent.

She might seem pampered on the surface, but deep down, she wasn’t the type to let herself be taken advantage of.
