Chapter : 298
Inside Ricardo's head, Ken ripped through his memories. He flipped through the spy's thoughts like reading an open book. He saw the training camps. He saw the previous assassinations. And finally, he found the exact face of the man pulling the strings.
Ken saw a large, wealthy politician sitting behind a massive mahogany desk. The man wore an expensive suit and gold rings on every finger. He was smiling greedily as he looked over documents related to the toxic Solurius radiation project.
The name echoed loudly in Ricardo's mind. Senator Norman.
Senator Norman was a vastly powerful, highly corrupt politician on the Upper Council. He was the one who funded Augusto. He was the one who funded Vane. He wanted to weaponize the radiation to build his own private army. And he had explicitly ordered Ricardo to trail the 13th Unit and utterly annihilate them if they learned too much about the conspiracy.
Ken pulled his hand away. The invasive magic ended instantly.
Ricardo lay on the roof, gasping for air. His body shook violently. Tears streamed down his face. The mental violation was agonizing. He felt like his entire soul had been turned inside out and examined under a microscope.
"Senator Norman," Ken said flatly. He wiped his hand on his pants. "A corrupt politician. How incredibly boring and predictable. He wants to kill my team just to cover up his own messy science project."
Ricardo stared at Ken in absolute horror. "What... what are you?"
Ken looked down at the trembling spy. He thought about just knocking the man out and leaving him in the alley. But Ricardo knew too much now. If Ricardo went back to Senator Norman, he would tell the politician that the 13th Unit was a massive threat. Norman would send an entire army of assassins to the estate. Naomi and the girls would never get a moment of peace. They would be constantly looking over their shoulders.
Ken could not allow that. The leak had to be plugged permanently. And he needed to do it without alerting his teammates inside. He wanted his afternoon nap, and he wanted his friends to stay safe.
"You are going away for a very long time," Ken said coldly.
Ken tapped into his dark authority. He did not summon Ryu or Leviathan this time. He needed a specialist. He needed someone who knew exactly how to handle prisoners permanently.
A black, swirling portal opened in the air right beside Ken. The temperature on the roof plummeted to freezing. Dark, suffocating energy poured out of the portal, making the sunlight around them dim.
A horrific entity stepped through the portal. It wore a tattered, blood-stained executioner's robe. Its face was completely wrapped in dirty bandages. Where its hands should be, it had massive, rust-covered metal scissor blades that clicked together with a sickening metallic sound.
This was "Scissors." He was the specialized head of the Torture Department from Lancelot's personal shadow army.
Ricardo tried to crawl backward. His eyes bulged with pure panic. He had seen dark magic before, but this creature radiated absolute despair. It was a nightmare pulled straight from the darkest corner of the world.
"No," Ricardo begged, his voice completely muffled by the silencing spell. "Please. I will not say anything. I swear. Let me go."
Ken completely ignored the man's pleas. He looked at the dark entity.
"Scissors," Ken commanded. His voice carried a chilling, absolute authority. "Take this man into custody. Ensure he never reports back to his master. Keep him completely secured in the shadows."
The entity bowed its bandaged head. Snip. Snip. The rusty metal blades clicked together eagerly.
Scissors reached down and grabbed Ricardo by the collar of his tactical vest. The spy thrashed and kicked, but the entity's grip was like iron. With a single, swift motion, Scissors dragged the terrified man backward into the dark, swirling portal.
The portal snapped shut. The freezing energy vanished instantly.
The roof was completely empty and silent once again. There was no blood. There was no struggle. Ricardo was simply gone, erased from the world without a single trace. Senator Norman would never receive his report. The 13th Unit was safe to continue their investigation in peace.
Ken let out a long sigh. He rolled his shoulders and shoved his hands back into his pockets. The cold, terrifying demeanor melted away instantly. The goofy, lazy slacker returned.
"Man, that took way too much effort," Ken mumbled to himself, looking at the clear blue sky. "I really hope the clone didn't eat all the chocolate biscuits. I am starving."
Ken snapped his fingers. The world bent around him again.
He teleported directly back into the estate bathroom. The space shimmered brightly, and the real Ken swapped places with his magical clone. The clone dissolved back into harmless ambient mana.
Ken flushed the toilet just to make it sound believable. He unlocked the bathroom door and shuffled lazily down the hallway. He dragged his cheap shoes on the floor. Scuff. Scuff. Scuff.
He walked back into the strategy room and dropped heavily into his chair at the end of the table. He slouched all the way down and grabbed the last chocolate biscuit from the box Elma had brought.
"I feel much better," Ken announced cheerfully, taking a massive bite of the biscuit. "Did I miss anything important?"
Naomi rolled her eyes and tossed a crumpled piece of paper at his head, though she smiled slightly. "You missed absolutely nothing, Ken. We are still stuck. The financial records are a dead end."
Sayma rubbed her tired eyes. "We need a new angle. We need to find someone connected to the Devil Flour research. Someone who was there from the very beginning."
Ken chewed his biscuit happily. He knew exactly who was behind the conspiracy now. He knew Senator Norman was the true mastermind. But he could not just tell them that. He had to guide them there slowly. He had to make them figure it out on their own, so his secret would remain safe and his lazy life would continue.
"Don't worry, guys," Ken smiled goofily, swallowing his food. "I am sure a clue will pop up eventually. The universe has a funny way of working things out."
Princess Iris offered a tired but hopeful smile. She looked back down at the ledgers. The 13th Unit was still in the dark, completely unaware that the lazy boy sitting at the end of the table had just effortlessly dismantled a massive threat and saved them all from certain death.
To them, he was just Ken. And Ken was just happy to eat his biscuit in peace.
---
Sayma closed the large financial ledger with a loud slap. Dust flew into the air. She pushed her thick glasses up the bridge of her nose and let out a long, tired sigh. The numbers simply did not make sense.
"This is a complete dead end," Sayma said. She rubbed her eyes. "The Benjamin Group wiped their records clean. The money vanishes into fake companies. We cannot trace the funding back to anyone."
