Chapter : 393
He clenched his hands into tight fists inside his pockets. He did not shout. He did not break things. He kept his anger completely controlled. He needed more answers. He needed to find the exact details.
Ken turned away from the cages. He walked deeper into the facility. He searched for an office. He needed to find the people responsible for this nightmare.
He walked down another concrete hallway. He found a row of doors. He checked the first door. It was an empty supply closet. He checked the second door. It was a bathroom.
He reached the very last door at the end of the hall. The door had a faded nameplate. The nameplate read: Director of Biological Operations.
Ken grabbed the doorknob. It was locked. He easily bypassed the lock with a tiny pulse of magic. The lock clicked. He pushed the door open and stepped inside.
---
The office was dark and messy. Papers littered the floor. A large metal desk sat in the center. An overturned chair rested near the wall. Someone had ransacked this room a long time ago. They left it in complete disarray.
Ken looked around. He noticed thick layers of dust on the desk. Nobody had entered this office for many months.
He walked over to the desk. He started searching through the debris. He picked up loose papers. They were mostly boring requisition forms. They listed orders for glass vials and surgical equipment. They did not contain any big secrets.
Ken did not give up. He knew scientists always hid their most important work.
He looked at the metal desk. He tapped his knuckles against the wood paneling on the side of the desk. The sound was hollow. He found a false compartment.
Ken pulled the wood panel away. He reached his hand into the hidden space. His fingers touched something cold and smooth. He pulled it out.
It was a small metal lockbox. The box had a glowing magical keypad on top.
Ken looked at the keypad. He did not want to guess the password. He just placed his palm flat against the metal box. He sent a microscopic wave of his absolute magic into the lock. The magical mechanism instantly deactivated. The box popped open with a soft click.
Ken opened the lid. Inside the box lay three thick, leather-bound journals.
He picked up the first journal. He opened the cover. The pages were filled with dense, encrypted text. It looked like random symbols and numbers. A normal person could never read it.
Ken was not a normal person. His mind easily deciphered the complex cipher. The symbols shifted and rearranged in his brain. The text turned into plain, readable language.
He started reading. The journals belonged to Dr. Carrion.
Ken stood in the quiet office. He read the pages. The words confirmed his worst suspicions.
Dr. Carrion wrote about his early days in the laboratory. He wrote about his passion for medicine. He wanted to cure diseases. He wanted to help people. But then, the tone of the journal changed. The handwriting became shaky and frantic.
Ken turned the page. He read a very specific entry.
"Dr. Raven visited the lab today," Carrion wrote. "He brought armed guards. He demanded total control of my research. He told me the Emperor’s vision was too weak. He wants to build a new empire. He wants absolute power. He forced me to sign a contract. If I refuse, he promised to murder my entire family."
Ken frowned. He read the next paragraph.
"Raven brought test subjects today," the journal continued. "I thought they were animals. They were not animals. They were people from the outer districts. Raven ordered me to inject them with the unrefined Devil Flour serum. I told him it was toxic. I told him it would kill them. He did not care. He smiled and told me to proceed."
Ken flipped to the second journal. The entries grew darker. They documented the creation of the Ashura race.
"The serum does not kill them," Carrion wrote. "It mutates them. The pain must be unimaginable. They scream for hours. Their bones break and reform. Their minds shatter completely. They turn into violent, aggressive beasts. Raven is thrilled. He calls them his ultimate biological soldiers. He plans to unleash them on our enemies."
Ken felt a cold chill run through his body. He stared at the page. Dr. Carrion did not want to make monsters. He was a hostage. He watched innocent people turn into nightmares. He was forced to oversee the entire horrific process.
Ken opened the third and final journal. He skipped to the very last pages. He found the conclusion to Dr. Carrion's tragic story.
"I cannot do this anymore," the final entry read. "I cannot build the Solurius radiation bomb. I cannot watch another innocent person mutate into an Ashura. I have reached my absolute breaking point. The guilt is eating my soul. I refuse to comply. I am stopping the research."
Ken read the very last sentence.
"I told Dr. Raven I am done," Carrion wrote. "I threatened to expose him to the Upper Council. I know he will send assassins for me. I know I will die soon. But I will die with a clear conscience. I have hidden my true journals. I hope someone finds them. I hope someone stops this madness."
Ken closed the journal. The leather cover made a soft thud.
He stood in the dark office. He processed the information. The truth was entirely clear. Dr. Carrion was not a villain. He was a victim. He hit his moral breaking point. He refused to build the apocalyptic bomb. He refused to continue the grotesque genetic manipulations. His absolute refusal caused his brutal assassination. Dr. Raven silenced him to protect the conspiracy.
Ken looked down at the journals in his hand. He had the ultimate proof. He had the complete confession of a dead man. This evidence would easily destroy Dr. Raven and the entire corrupt faction.
But Ken did not smile. He did not feel victorious. He just felt an immense, quiet disgust.
He thought about the sleeping, mutated people in the cages outside the office. They were trapped in monstrous bodies. Their minds were gone. They could never return to their normal lives. They could never go back to their families. They were permanently broken.
Ken tucked the three journals safely into the inside pocket of his navy blue suit jacket.
He turned around and walked out of the office. He walked back down the concrete hallway. He entered the subterranean village again.
The Ashura creatures were still sleeping in their cages. Ken stopped and looked at them one last time. He looked at the dirty teddy bear. He looked at the faded family photograph.
He did not make a joke. He did not complain about his shoes.
"You did not deserve this," Ken whispered softly. His voice was completely serious.
He could not cure them. The mutation was permanent. Their human DNA was entirely destroyed by the toxic radiation. Living in those cages was pure torture. They were just waiting to be used as mindless weapons by corrupt politicians.
