Chapter : 426
"This couch is amazing," Ken mumbled to himself. He stared at the ceiling. "It has the perfect amount of cushion. I could sit here for the rest of my life. I never want to stand up again."
Naomi walked into the living room. She carried a small tray with two glasses of cold water. She wore her dark combat pants and a simple gray shirt. Her bright red hair was tied back in a neat ponytail. She walked over to the sofa. She did not yell at him today. She did not frown. She smiled a very warm, friendly smile. She looked at his messy clothes and just shook her head softly.
"You are going to get crumbs all over the cushions, Ken," Naomi said gently. Her voice was kind. She placed the glasses of water on the wooden coffee table. "Drink some water. You cannot just survive on salty snacks."
Ken gave her a big, goofy grin. "Water is very boring, Naomi. Potato chips have flavor. Flavor is very important for my brain."
Naomi chuckled quietly. She sat down on the armchair across from him. She crossed her legs. She looked very relaxed. "Your brain is entirely focused on avoiding work. You need hydration. Just drink it."
"Fine," Ken agreed happily. He leaned forward and grabbed a glass. He took a large sip of the cold water. "You are a very good boss. You always bring me drinks. I appreciate the excellent room service."
Laxmi sat on the floor near the large window. The fire magic user tossed a tiny orange spark between her fingers. She grinned a massive, excited grin. "You are so lazy, Ken! I went for a five-mile run this morning. You are still wearing your pajamas from yesterday!"
"These are not pajamas," Ken corrected her. He popped another chip into his mouth. "This is my highly fashionable casual wear. Running is terrible for your knees. I am protecting my joints. I am very smart."
Zinia stood near the doorway. The strong earth mage stretched her arms above her head. She laughed a deep, booming laugh. "You protect your joints by never moving them. That is a very unique strategy, Ken."
Sayma sat at the dining table. The intelligent Vice-Captain read a large, thick book. She pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose. She turned a page slowly. "Statistically, regular physical movement increases human life expectancy. Total inactivity leads to muscle loss."
"I do not need muscles," Ken replied casually. "I have you guys. You have enough muscles for the entire estate. I just need to be comfortable."
Luna lay flat on a long wooden bench against the wall. The lightning user was fast asleep. A soft, knitted blanket covered her shoulders. She snored very quietly. Risa sat on the floor right next to the bench. The sweet pink-haired healer held a box of colored pencils. She drew a bright yellow sun on a piece of paper. She smiled happily.
Ira stood perfectly still near the corner of the room. The water mage wore her neat dark blue uniform. Her pale face showed zero emotion. She stared straight ahead. She observed the entire room. She blinked once. It was a very calm, peaceful afternoon for the 13th Unit.
Ken finished his glass of water. He set it back down on the table. He let out a massive, dramatic yawn. He stretched his arms high above his head.
"Well, that water made me very tired," Ken announced loudly. He grabbed his bag of chips. He stood up from the sofa. He slouched his shoulders again. "I need to go to my room. I am going to take a very long nap. My eyes are officially closed for business today."
Naomi smiled and waved her hand. "Go take your nap, slacker. We will be quiet down here. We will not bother you."
"Thank you," Ken said. "You are the best."
Ken shuffled out of the living room. He dragged his cheap shoes on the wooden floorboards. Scuff. Scuff. Scuff. He walked up the stairs. He reached his small, dusty bedroom on the second floor. He stepped inside. He closed the door behind him. He reached down and turned the metal lock. A soft click echoed in the quiet room.
The moment the door locked, Ken dropped his goofy smile. He stopped slouching. He stood up perfectly straight. His sleepy, lazy eyes turned incredibly focused. He tossed the bag of potato chips onto his desk. He walked to the center of the bedroom. He crossed his arms over his chest. He stood completely still. He waited.
A few seconds later, the temperature in the tiny bedroom plummeted. The air turned freezing cold. The walls seemed to vibrate with intense energy. A brilliant, glowing green magical circle materialized directly on the wooden floorboards. The bright green light illuminated the dark corners of the room. It was a high-level, absolute summoning spell.
The light flared upward. A tall, flawlessly handsome man stepped out of the green circle.
He had sharp, aristocratic features. He possessed piercing silver eyes. He had short, perfectly styled dark hair. He wore a sleek black tactical jacket over a dark shirt. He wore dark trousers and polished combat boots. He looked like an elite, highly dangerous secret agent.
This was Karna. He was Ken’s primary intelligence gatherer. He was a master of stealth, espionage, and uncovering global secrets.
Karna stepped completely out of the circle. The green light faded away into nothingness behind him. He looked at Ken. He placed his right hand over his heart. He offered a crisp, perfectly professional bow.
"Good afternoon, Boss," Karna said. His voice was smooth, calm, and incredibly polite. "I apologize for disturbing your rest. I bring urgent news."
Ken did not move. He looked directly at the spirit. "Report."
Karna stood up straight. He clasped his hands neatly behind his back. His silver eyes looked very serious. The professional spymaster did not waste any time. He delivered the dire intelligence with absolute precision.
"The Bluemoon Kingdom has fallen," Karna announced.
Ken stared at him. He did not show any surprise. He just listened.
"The invasion occurred early this morning," Karna explained quietly. "A massive, highly organized faction of Black Magicians crossed the border. They launched a devastating, full-scale assault on the Bluemoon capital city. The attack was totally relentless. It was an absolute massacre."
Karna paced slowly across the small bedroom. His combat boots made zero sound on the floorboards.
"The Bluemoon grandmasters attempted to defend the city," Karna detailed. "They established massive elemental barriers. They built walls of solid rock. They created roaring walls of fire. They summoned a gigantic golden shield over the outer gates. Their defenses were incredibly strong. They were legendary warriors. They fought with intense bravery."
Ken watched his servant pace. He remained totally silent.
"But the Black Magicians bypassed the magic effortlessly," Karna continued. His voice grew darker. "The enemy did not struggle. They used highly concentrated dark mana to erase the defensive spells entirely. They shattered the golden shield in a matter of minutes. They marched straight into the city. They unleashed a terrifying purple fog over the streets. The citizens panicked. The outer walls collapsed completely."
Karna stopped pacing. He looked directly at Ken.
