Emily's words had probably come across as harsh and unsympathetic to Charlotte's parents. Even so, neither of them managed to argue back. Though they clenched their teeth and balled their hands into tight fists, they remained completely silent.
At that moment, Emily's words weren't cruel, they were simply the reality Charlotte's family seemed unwilling to accept. The silence that followed only made the room feel even more uncomfortable. My gaze drifted back and forth between Emily and my little sister's parents.
Charlotte's mother parted her lips several times, as if she were about to say something, only to stop herself at the last second. Every attempt died before it could become words, as though she always found herself back at the same place, unable to come up with an answer.
Charlotte's father, on the other hand, took a slow, deep breath. His expression was still filled with frustration, but after a few seconds, he gathered enough courage to finally face Emily... though "face" might have been too strong a word. There was far more hesitation than defiance in his eyes.
"So..." he began, discreetly biting the corner of his lip. Not hard enough to hurt himself, but enough to betray the discomfort and reluctance he felt about the situation. His voice came out low and heavy, as though every word took a considerable amount of effort: "What, exactly, do you expect us to do?"
Emily drew in a deep breath after hearing Charlotte's father speak. It wasn't a sigh, but a long, slow, controlled inhale that made the state of her patience painfully obvious. It was the kind of gesture someone made when they were making a conscious effort to stay composed, even though that composure was dangerously close to breaking.
"First of all, Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore... we need to make one thing absolutely clear" Her voice remained calm, yet every word carried undeniable weight: "Neither I, nor anyone working under my authority... and, unlikely as it may sound, not even this anomaly..." Emily lifted her eyes toward me in an unmistakably suggestive glance before turning her attention back to the couple.
"... poses any threat to your family. Least of all to your daughter" She paused briefly, giving them time to absorb what she'd said: "I'm fully aware that our methods may seem... less than orthodox. Strange, even. Especially from your perspective. And honestly, I don't blame you for thinking that"
Her tone hardened ever so slightly: "But if there's one thing I've learned after all these years studying anomalies, it's that trying to understand them through conventional methods is, without exaggeration, the stupidest thing anyone can do"
Emily's eyes narrowed just a little. The diplomacy was still there, but it now shared space with an unwavering resolve: "Whether you accept it or not..." She met both of their eyes without wavering: "... your daughter is part of this world now"
Charlotte's parents remained silent. Their expressions didn't show acceptance, but understanding. They understood perfectly well what Emily meant, yet understanding and accepting were two entirely different things. Both of them seemed trapped between reason and emotion, unable to take the step logic demanded of them.
It was Charlotte's mother who finally broke the uneasy silence: "Even so..."
Her voice came out soft, almost faltering. Resting in her lap, her hands tightened even further. Not enough to hurt herself, but enough for her knuckles to turn white. It was a small gesture, yet one so full of tension it was uncomfortable to watch.
She took a deep breath before continuing: "What exactly do you expect me to do?" she asked, lifting her eyes to meet Emily's: "Just... accept all of this? Just like that? Overnight? After everything I've been through?"
Her voice began to tremble: "After all those countless sleepless nights... after crying myself to sleep because I believed I was a broken woman... worthless... someone who couldn't even conceive a child?"
She slowly shook her head, looking away for a moment as she struggled to keep her emotions in check: "You wouldn't understand... you couldn't possibly understand. Only a mother who's tried everything... who's watched every last bit of hope slip away until she completely lost faith in herself... only someone like that could understand how I feel"
Her voice dropped to little more than a whisper: "Charlotte isn't just my daughter... she's a part of me. My other half" Her eyes began to glisten with tears: "She was the only hope I'd ever had in my entire life... the only proof that I wasn't broken... that I could finally call myself a mother"
Everyone quietly took in the words of my little sister's mother. Each of us reacted differently to her unexpected confession, but the one who looked the most shaken was, without question, her husband: "Honey..." he murmured, his lips parting slightly.

The words, however, never came. His throat seemed to tighten, forcing him to swallow hard as he looked away for a brief moment, clearly unable to find anything he could possibly say.
In the end, all he did was take his wife's hand firmly in his own, intertwining their fingers and squeezing gently, as though that simple gesture was the only way he could express everything he was unable to put into words.
For a few seconds, silence once again settled over the room. Then, unexpectedly, the first person to move was Charlotte, who had remained completely silent until now. She wasn't looking at Althea anymore.
Instead, her gaze was fixed on the floor, distant and deeply contemplative, as though countless memories were flashing through her mind all at once. There was something in her expression that blended longing, pain, and a strange sense of understanding.
Without saying a word, Charlotte slowly reached out. With gentle care, she took her mother's hand and her father's at the same time, wrapping both of them in her own. It was a quiet gesture, yet one filled with unmistakable meaning.
"Mom..." Charlotte began softly. The woman slowly lifted her eyes to meet her daughter's. The expression that had seemed consumed by almost complete darkness softened, if only slightly. Pain, guilt, and fear still lingered in her eyes, but above all else, there was love.
A deep, undeniable love that would never disappear: "I have no idea what you and Dad went through before I was born" Charlotte slowly shook her head, letting out a long sigh: "And honestly... I don't think I have the right to act like I understand"
She paused briefly, carefully choosing her next words: "But there is one thing I'm absolutely certain about" Her eyes shifted from her mother to her father: "I love both of you. More than anything. Whether I'm an anomaly or not... that doesn't change who you are to me"
Her voice faltered for just a moment before regaining its strength: "You raised me. You took care of me. You gave me everything you possibly could. You gave me my life" A faint smile appeared on her lips: "Even if I spent the rest of my life trying, I don't think I could ever thank you enough for all of that"
Silence filled the room again for a few moments. Then Charlotte's smile grew a little more confident, almost defiant, perfectly reflecting who she was: "Our world's already completely insane" She let out a quiet chuckle through her nose: "Anomalies, anomalous zones, disasters... honestly, being an anomaly doesn't even sound like the craziest thing anymore"
Her gaze never wavered: "If this means I'll have the power to protect you when the next disaster happens..." She gave a small shrug, as if the answer were obvious: "Then so be it"
Charlotte took one last deep breath before finishing without the slightest hesitation: "I've never been the kind of person who looks back and wastes time regretting things that can't be changed" A hint of determination crept into her smile: "I'm going to keep moving forward"
Charlotte then turned toward Emily. The unnatural gleam that had appeared in her eyes earlier, when she had challenged Althea, shone once again. Her expression was completely serious, so unwavering that it felt almost out of place on someone her age. It wasn't the demeanor of an ordinary teenager, but of someone accustomed to drawing firm lines.
She held Emily's gaze for several long seconds before speaking. Her voice was calm, yet carried an unshakable resolve: "First of all... even if your assumption is correct, I don't want you or your organization interfering with my relationship with my family"
Emily remained silent, simply watching Charlotte with careful attention. Charlotte's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. At that exact moment, the lights overhead flickered. Once. Then again. A brief silence settled over the room before Charlotte continued, every word spoken with absolute conviction.
"That's non-negotiable. I won't back down on that, no matter what happens" She paused briefly, never taking her eyes off Emily: "I'm not your experiment... I'm your patient"
Emily didn't answer right away. Her expression remained as serious as ever, motionless as a mask, without the slightest trace of hesitation. The silence lingered for another moment before a faint smile tugged at the corner of her lips: "Of course. No problem"
She gave a casual shrug, as though they were discussing something utterly insignificant: "That was my intention from the very beginning, anyway" After a brief pause, she tilted her head slightly: "Well... I can't say the organization's upper management will feel the same way, but let's just say that the [Angel of Death] would be extremely unhappy if that didn't happen"
Emily let the words hang in the air for a moment, allowing their weight to settle before calmly continuing: "And honestly, I don't think anyone over there would want to find out how she expresses that kind of disappointment. It might... complicate their daily routines a little"
Then the faint smile disappeared, replaced by a broad grin stretching from ear to ear. Strangely enough, it looked warm and friendly, yet carried a subtle threat that made it deeply unsettling to look at: "I'm sure they'll agree to your conditions very quickly" She let out a quiet amused huff: "After all, some decisions simply aren't worth the risk of saying no to"
I didn't say anything. Maybe I was just imagining things. Even so... Emily seemed strangely pleased with how everything had turned out, especially the part where she'd be using my name to intimidate the organization's upper management. Actually "pleased" might not even be the right word. She looked genuinely delighted by the idea, as if she were already picturing the looks on their faces.
The longer I watched that faint smile resting on her lips, the more a persistent suspicion took root in my mind. For some reason, I couldn't shake the feeling that Emily was using this entire situation as nothing more than a convenient excuse to get back at upper management. It was exactly the kind of thing she'd do without a second thought... And yet, I didn't have a single shred of proof.
That was the problem. Her smile was simply too perfect. Small, serene, and innocent enough that it wouldn't make anyone suspicious. A flawless smile, one completely incapable of betraying even the slightest malicious intent. Maybe I was just being paranoid. In the end, all I could do was keep those suspicions to myself... while Emily continued smiling as though she were the most innocent person in the world.
