Anomaly

Chapter 467 - From despair, hope is born [48]

Setting aside the strange atmosphere hanging over the place, my "Sight" swept across the entire neighborhood with careful attention. At first glance, viewed only on the surface, it looked like a perfectly ordinary residential neighborhood. A few cars sat parked along the streets, motionless and silent, while the front yards reflected varying levels of care.

Some were maintained just enough to keep them from becoming a nuisance, with neatly trimmed lawns and only a handful of flowers scattered around the property. Others, however, clearly reflected far more meticulous attention, with carefully sculpted hedges, organized flowerbeds, and freshly pruned trees.

Even so... something felt deeply wrong. There wasn't the slightest sign of life. No dog barking in the distance, no television sounds drifting out through an open window, no neighbors chatting, no faint laughter of children playing nearby.

Not even the hum of an engine or the chirping of a bird disturbed the suffocating silence that blanketed the long, empty streets. It was as if the entire neighborhood had been abandoned overnight. In fact, ever since Charlotte had reacted uneasily to this area, I'd been observing everything far more carefully.

Because of that, I noticed something that had escaped me before: faint, unnatural fluctuations drifting through the air, almost imperceptible, subtly warping the surroundings for the briefest moments, like invisible ripples passing through space itself.

They weren't constant, nor were they intense enough to be seen with the naked eye, but my "Sight" could pick them up as long as I focused hard enough. I had no idea what those distortions actually were. But considering everything that had happened so far... I seriously doubted they meant anything good.

Before anyone had the chance to say a word, Victor, who shared my abnormal senses in situations like this, seemed to notice exactly the same thing I had. His expression hardened almost immediately, and the calm, measured pace of his footsteps became noticeably more cautious: "... I don't like this. Not one bit" His voice was quiet but steady, carrying a tension that was impossible to miss.

Almost by instinct, his hand discreetly slipped inside the heavy coat he was wearing, finding the concealed compartment where his firearm rested. The movement was so natural that it made it obvious just how deeply ingrained the habit had become.

Actually, while it isn't exactly relevant right now, I have to admit I was genuinely surprised when I learned that these completely ordinary-looking coats, worn by everyone, including Charlotte, were actually highly advanced suits of armor with unique defensive properties. Honestly, I never would've guessed just by looking at them.

But setting the wonders of modern technology aside, Victor spoke again without taking his eyes off our surroundings: "This place..." he muttered, his brow furrowing even deeper: "It's giving me chills"

His gaze slowly swept across every corner of the neighborhood, moving back and forth like a predator searching for something hidden in the darkness: "There's something here..." His voice dropped even lower, barely above a whisper: "I can feel it. Something... something really dangerous"

If everyone had been watching the situation cautiously before, now the tension had fully settled in. Victor's words were enough to turn uncertainty into genuine apprehension. The silence seemed even heavier than before as each of us instinctively kept our senses on high alert, searching for the slightest sign that something was wrong.

That was the problem. We had absolutely no idea what we were dealing with, let alone where whatever we were looking for actually was. None of us could see any obvious threat, and the unsettling feeling of being watched by something invisible only made the situation even more uncomfortable.

In the end, with no concrete leads and seemingly trapped in a dead end, there was only one person who appeared to have sensed something before the rest of us. Arthur turned toward Charlotte. His expression remained calm, though a trace of curiosity lingered beneath his concern.

"I assume there was a specific reason you stopped us here" he said in a calm, measured tone. After a brief pause, he continued: "Were you able to sense something while we were still in the car?"

As he spoke, Arthur subtly adjusted the monocle over his eye, as though hoping it would reveal something different this time: "My monocle isn't detecting anything at all" he commented, frowning slightly. His eyes swept across the deserted road once more before returning to Charlotte: "At least... nothing that's visible to the naked eye"

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Charlotte didn't answer immediately. Her eyes narrowed as she stared toward a specific point in the distance, as though trying to see something beyond the limits of ordinary vision. She remained silent for several moments, concentrating on the strange sensations flowing through her senses.

When she finally spoke, there was a faint trace of hesitation in her voice: "I... I'm not entirely sure" She let out a quiet sigh and brushed a few loose strands of hair aside, never taking her eyes off the same distant point.

"I'm certain I'm sensing something up ahead" she murmured, lightly furrowing her brow: "But it's strange. The feeling seems... scattered, like it's spread throughout the entire area. I can't pinpoint exactly where it's coming from" Charlotte paused briefly, trying to make sense of the confusing sensations before continuing.

"I think I'd be able to locate the source more accurately if we got closer. The nearer we get to that... source, or whatever it is, the clearer these strange fluctuations should become" She slowly raised a hand and pointed toward one of the streets leading deeper into the residential district: "Somewhere... over there"

Before anyone could respond, our eyes naturally followed the direction she was pointing, settling on the residential area ahead. Even from a distance, the place looked completely abandoned. Empty streets. Silent houses. Not a single sign of movement. It looked far more like a ghost town than a neighborhood where people were supposed to be living.

The silence hanging over the area was deeply unsettling, making the atmosphere even more oppressive. Pretty fun... or at least that's what I would've said if we weren't stuck in the middle of this ridiculous situation. Now that we finally had a new lead to follow, Emily, Laura, Victor, and Rupert decided it was time to speed things up.

Without wasting a second, the four of them contacted the different teams that had been standing by. Orders were relayed quickly, and within minutes, multiple vehicles began taking up strategic positions around the area, establishing an organized and efficient search perimeter.

At the same time, satellite sweeps were being conducted to detect any anomalies or suspicious activity. So far, however, the results hadn't changed. Nothing.

No unusual readings, no changes in the terrain, no energy signatures, not even the slightest clue that could explain what was happening. And considering everything we were dealing with... the complete lack of evidence was strange enough on its own.

Once the command and monitoring center had been fully set up, there really wasn't much left for us to do. Several teams, disguised as ordinary civilians, were sent into the residential neighborhood in hopes of gathering useful information from the locals. Until they came back with a report... all we could do was wait.

And waiting was surprisingly difficult. Charlotte and I were, without exaggeration, experiencing one of the most painfully boring moments of our lives. Well... Charlotte a little less than me. At that very moment, she was completely absorbed in playing with my Alter Ego. Believe it or not, being able to create almost anything out of shadows definitely had its perks.

As I sat on a swing made entirely of shadows that had appeared out of nowhere, gently rocking back and forth, my Alter Ego had taken the form of a tiny shadow cat, darting around in circles while Charlotte chased after it, laughing every time it slipped through her fingers only to reappear right behind her a second later.

Eventually, she stopped running, turned toward me with an inquisitive gleam in her eyes, and rested her hands on her hips: "So..." she began, tilting her head slightly: "Did I get this story right?"

Before I could answer, she gave a small hop, landing right in front of me on the sidewalk and practically blocking my view: "So you got this ability..." she said: "...after jumping into a pitch-black lake..." She paused for a moment, as though trying to organize the sheer absurdity of the sentence in her own mind: "... and then defeated a giant humanoid octopus made of shadows?" She stared at me for several long seconds without saying another word.

I tilted my head slightly at Charlotte's question. Looking at it from that perspective... Yeah, it really did sound completely ridiculous. Still, if I was being completely honest, that was exactly what had happened: "Basically?" I replied with a small shrug: "Yeah... that's pretty much exactly what happened"

Charlotte let out a quiet laugh, shaking her head in disbelief: "Am I weird for thinking that's... weirdly awesome?" she asked: "I mean, that was completely insane... but it was also amazing"

There was genuine excitement in her voice, the kind of enthusiasm someone had while listening to an impossible adventure and, instead of doubting it, simply wishing they'd been there to see it happen. I shrugged again: "Maybe?" I answered indifferently: "But honestly, you're already weird enough in my book. Thinking that's cool isn't going to make me think you're much weirder than I already do"

"Oh, so that's how you see me?" Charlotte asked, placing a hand dramatically over her chest in mock offense: "How cruel"

"I'm just being honest" I shrugged.

"You know, too much honesty can hurt people's feelings" Charlotte shook her head in disapproval.

She laughed again before either of us could continue the teasing. Silence settled between us once more, but this time it was the comfortable kind, the kind that didn't need to be filled with words.

Now sitting on a shadow swing of her own, Charlotte gently swung her legs back and forth, absentmindedly passing the time. Meanwhile, my gaze remained fixed on the heavy sky overhead, its dark clouds looking as though they could unleash a storm at any moment.

Then the sound of approaching footsteps broke the quiet. I looked over and saw Victor walking toward us: "Sorry to interrupt your break..." he said: "Or whatever it is you two were doing" He ran a hand through his hair, absentmindedly messing it up before letting out a quiet sigh: "But we've got new information" His expression was far more serious than usual: "I think it's time for you two to step in"
