Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 229: Saving the Oasis 1In the recent period, Cloudsea Planet had seen the most significant changes. The Qio Vine, Knotweed Kelp, Azure Shrimp, and Blue Shrimp Seaweed were all growing well and could now be mass-produced for the market. The fish that had been introduced previously had all survived, and some had even begun to spawn.
The Qio Vine’s progress, however, was a bit slower.
Perhaps because Cloudsea Planet had given it enough room to grow, the Qio Vine, despite its vigorous growth, wasn’t in a hurry to bear fruit. Instead, it focused all its energy on extending its vines, trying to cover as much of the sea as possible.
Over on Veridian Prime, after a few days of exploration, Cathaya had already selected a location and was preparing to establish a base.
They had also encountered the Flower Sprites.
Thanks to Moira Lynch’s heads-up, the communication between both sides was exceedingly smooth.
Mochina was a veritable treasure trove of ingredients.
’Moira was a little reluctant to let anyone develop it.’
But compared to the rich variety of ingredients on the surface, the minerals buried deep underground were far more valuable.
As for the other two planets, their environments remained as harsh as ever.
It was worth noting, however, that Moira had planted a few seeds of the Light Absorption Magic Tree on the planet covered in deserts and wastelands, and they were currently growing well.
「Soon, the day the game was set to begin arrived.」
Moira geared up, not forgetting her mask, hat, or windproof goggles.
「As twelve o’clock arrived.」
The system’s voice sounded in everyone’s ears.
[Dear Gamers, hello, and welcome to this round of the game.
This game’s theme is Saving the Oasis.
On the distant Planet Kharis, most of the land is covered by desert, and water resources are scarce.
In such a harsh environment, oases have become a vital resource for the Kessari tribe living here. However, due to excessive deforestation in recent years, the area of the oases is rapidly shrinking.
To protect their homeland, the Kessari tribe has specially invited numerous master tree-planters to help them plant trees and save the oases.
The game will last for three days. Within these three days, each person must plant at least five hundred trees and ensure they survive. Otherwise, you will be considered to have failed the game, and losers will have their gaming qualifications revoked.]
As the system’s voice faded, Moira Lynch took a deep breath. ’That’s more like it.’
In the next second, Moira’s vision went black. When she opened her eyes again, a wave of heat instantly washed over her face.
Moira looked around. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but golden desert and other players.
Thanks to Moira’s reminder, everyone was extremely well-prepared.
"Aren’t we supposed to be saving an oasis? Why did they teleport us here?"
Someone in the crowd complained.
Just then, Moira spotted a familiar figure in the crowd.
Hugh Finch noticed Moira as well and started walking toward her.
"Are you the only one here?"
The two asked in unison.
"Looks like the other two were teleported somewhere else," Hugh Finch said.
Moira Lynch nodded. "It’s all desert here. Our mission is to plant trees and save the oasis, so let’s find the oasis first."
"Wait a bit before you take your things out, then. There are too many prying eyes here."
Hearing this, Moira made an OK gesture.
The other players knew complaining was useless. After grumbling for a bit, they began looking for companions, preparing to search for an oasis. After all, they only had three days.
Five hundred trees in three days meant they had to plant over one hundred trees a day on average, and they had to ensure every single one survived.
That meant they would likely have to plant more than just five hundred trees.
After everyone else had left, Hugh Finch asked, "Which way should we go?"
Moira pointed in a certain direction.
Her spiritual power detected an oasis a few thousand meters in that direction.
"That way." With a wave of her hand, two camels suddenly materialized.
Shane Rhodes had been the one to get these two camels. There were four in total, all of which were being raised by Moira.
With camels for transportation, Moira and Hugh Finch were exceptionally comfortable compared to the other players. Aside from being a little hot—which wasn’t an issue thanks to the Chimefin scales—they were quite at ease.
"Aren’t deserts supposed to have a lot of cacti? How come I haven’t seen a single one?" Moira asked, looking around from her perch on the camel.
"This isn’t Caelus," Hugh Finch explained. "And even in the deserts on Caelus, cacti aren’t exactly everywhere."
Just then, Moira suddenly sensed movement under the sand.
"Run!"
With that, Moira slapped the camel beneath her.
Both camels broke into a sprint, quickly leaving the area they had just been in.
The moment they left, a funnel-like sandpit suddenly appeared on the previously flat ground.
A plant-like creature slowly grew out of the pit, its bud gradually unfurling to reveal vibrantly colored petals.
[Gilded Emperor Scorpion: One of the top predators in the Kharisian Desert. The flower on its head is used to attract prey while its body remains hidden underground, waiting for prey to approach. It fears the cold and falls into a deep slumber at night.
Gilded Emperor Scorpions are social animals. If you find one, there is often a large group nearby.]
After hearing the last sentence, Moira winced, urging the two camels to go even faster.
Behind them, the Gilded Emperor Scorpion from before had already crawled out of its sandpit. With two massive pincers and a long, stinger-tipped tail, it was rapidly closing in on them.
Moira could feel that the entire patch of land beneath their feet was swarming with these Gilded Emperor Scorpions, all stirring restlessly below them.
"Which way!"
Hugh Finch, holding something that resembled a Compass, pointed in a certain direction and shouted.
Seeing this, Moira didn’t hesitate, immediately commanding the two camels to turn and run in the direction Hugh had indicated.
This path had noticeably fewer Gilded Emperor Scorpions than the others, but it wasn’t entirely clear.
Moreover, without them realizing it, a massive swarm of Gilded Emperor Scorpions had gathered behind them.
It was a vast procession.
If you ignored the scorpions below, from a distance, it looked like a moving floral sea rushing toward them. The scene was actually quite beautiful.
Just then, two funnel-shaped sandpits appeared directly in front of them. Two more Gilded Emperor Scorpions leaped out, their mouthparts agape, waving their huge pincers and venomous tails, eager to attack.
The two camels came to an emergency halt, trapping Moira and Hugh Finch in place.
Hugh Finch said to Moira, "In a moment, put the camels away. I’ll use my Flying Device to get us out of here. Let’s just leave this place first."
Although it was a good idea, Moira rejected it.
"No need. I have a better idea."
As she spoke, Moira took a cold rock out of her storage space.
