Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 352 - 342: Inhumanly ExtravagantIn response to Moira Lynch’s question, Kai York explained, "This is a life pod we salvaged from a spaceship. It can withstand all sorts of extreme conditions."
The Elf Tree House was safe enough for now, but who knew what other kinds of cataclysms lay in wait for them.
Disasters like extreme heat, insect plagues, and polar vortexes seemed dangerous, but with enough preparation, they were survivable. However, there were far more dangerous cataclysms—the kind that could kill you instantly.
So, the moment they saw this life pod, they bought it without a second thought.
On top of that, they each bought one for their own families, just in case.
After hearing Kai York’s explanation, Moira Lynch said, "Well, thank you for the gift."
Seeing that Moira Lynch didn’t look particularly thrilled, Shane Rhodes asked, "Moira, don’t you like the life pod?"
Moira Lynch quickly shook her head. "No, that’s not it. It’s just... I was originally planning to use this patch of land to grow things."
Plus, the life pod made the once-spacious yard feel a lot smaller all of a sudden.
Hearing Moira Lynch’s concern, Kai York said, "Oh, I thought it was something serious. This life pod has an automatic concealment feature."
As he spoke, Kai York triggered a mechanism, revealing a red button.
He pressed the red button, and before their eyes, the life pod slowly vanished.
"Normally, the life pod stays hidden underground. If we run into danger, we can transfer directly from inside the Elf Tree House to the life pod."
"From inside the Elf Tree House?"
Shane Rhodes nodded. "That’s right. As soon as we brought the life pod back, the Elf Tree House linked with it. The Elf Tree has even created a new tunnel underneath that leads directly to the life pod."
"It can do that?"
Moira Lynch was shocked. The Elf Tree Houses she had researched didn’t have nearly this many functions.
"The ones you researched before were ordinary Elf Tree Houses. The ones you have cultivated are not. It’s entirely possible for them to develop other abilities."
"I see. In that case, can you detect what other special abilities the Elf Tree House I’m living in now has?"
"Detection is not possible. You can only discover them for yourself."
"Fine, then."
Looking at the now-empty patch of land, Moira Lynch decided to plant corn there.
"Oh, right. Did Hugh Finch tell you about the badges?" Moira Lynch asked suddenly.
Shane Rhodes nodded. "He did."
"Then I assume you two didn’t hand yours over."
"Of course not. We had just completed the mission and hadn’t even collected anything yet, so we refused."
Unlike Moira Lynch and Hugh Finch, Shane Rhodes and Kai York’s refusal was for a simpler reason. They had just completed their mission and barely had time to catch their breath when the system approached them. It offered them a deal: hand over their badges to end the game early and return to Caelus.
The location they were in had an extreme power shortage, so there were all sorts of power generators.
The two of them had been eyeing those machines greedily for a long time.
Ever since the polar vortex hit, the base’s power supply had become extremely unstable.
Those who had awakened abilities related to thunder, electricity, or wind were all conscripted to generate power for the base.
No one was forced to go, but if you refused, the base would cut off your power, leaving you to generate your own.
That was the situation Moira Lynch and her friends were in now.
Given their relationship with the base, they probably would have been supplied with power if they’d asked.
However, Shane Rhodes saw it as a good training opportunity and flatly refused Chase Shepard’s offer.
However, generating power was completely different from zapping people.
After burning out countless home appliances and blowing up who knows how many battery packs, Shane Rhodes finally managed to master the energy control needed for charging.
From then on, with daily practice, Shane’s control over lightning grew stronger by the day. The only side effect was that he felt completely drained every evening.
Logically, Shane Rhodes’s ability was more than enough to supply their own group with electricity. But, one mustn’t forget that while Moira Lynch was on her own, Shane Rhodes, Kai York, and Hugh Finch all had families.
As the only one among their families with a Thunder Element ability, Shane Rhodes couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
With Shane’s ability, even supplying four families with power every day was still well within his capacity. And so, Kai York figured that the leftover electricity Shane had each day was going to waste, and it would be better to put it to good use.
And just like that, an ad for selling electricity suddenly popped up on the game forums.
And so began Shane Rhodes’s new life of being squeezed dry daily.
Just as Kai York was feeling smug about his little enterprise, he had no idea that he himself had become a target.
Hugh Finch had somehow gotten his hands on a set of wind power generation equipment.
And just like that, Kai York went from being the slave driver to a slave himself, miserably generating power every day alongside Shane Rhodes.
It was precisely this experience that allowed them to feel right at home during the last game round, letting them complete the mission with ease.
"This time, we brought back a ton of generators from the game, all different kinds. There’s one you can just hold, and it generates power from your body heat. There’s another you bury in the soil, and it generates power as long as plants are growing around it. But the most incredible one is this: a snow-power generator. It generates electricity from the energy released when snow melts."
"We’ll keep some of these generators for ourselves and trade the rest to the base."
Moira Lynch looked at the various generators Kai York was showing off and asked curiously, "If they have so many different kinds of generators, why was that place still short on power?"
"The people there were short on power, but they never conserved it. No matter how much electricity you generated, it would never be enough for them."
"What do you mean?" Moira Lynch asked.
"Moira, have you ever seen an outdoor air conditioner?" Kai York asked suddenly.
"I’ve heard of them, but I’ve never seen one," Moira Lynch replied honestly.
"The game Shane and I entered was set on a planet called Tathos. The temperature there stays around seventy degrees Celsius year-round, and it’s inhabited by The Shatata People."
"Before that, I thought outdoor air conditioners were the height of luxury. As it turns out, to cool themselves down, the entire Shatata race converted a whole other planet into a giant air conditioner to blow cool air at their own. They literally forced the temperature of Planet Tathos down."
Hearing Kai York’s story, Moira Lynch could already imagine just how extravagant the Shatata were. It was just obscene.
"But that doesn’t make sense," Moira Lynch said. "How could a race capable of turning an entire planet into an air conditioner possibly be short on power? That’s completely illogical."
Shane Rhodes, who had been quiet, explained, "It’s because of the wealth gap. A classic case of ’the rich have it all, and the poor have nothing.’ We were there to help the ones who were about to ’die of thirst,’ so to speak."
