Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 522 - 512: Saving Ariel 5Moira Lynch recalled the incident with The Crimson Alliance. She’d saved a pirate named Raoul, and he’d even given her a pendant.
Based on the information she’d received at the time, this Raoul was apparently a leader among the interstellar pirates.
’If I run into him...’
A thought suddenly occurred to Moira Lynch, but she shook her head. ’Forget it. It’s better if I don’t see him.’
She remembered, after all, that the man coveted her ability and wanted to poach her.
Although she had already refused him, pirates were the same as bandits. A bandit who listened to reason wouldn’t be a bandit.
Last time, Raoul had only backed off because Ellers was around.
Now, with no one by her side, she couldn’t guarantee that Raoul wouldn’t try to take her by force if he found her.
Thinking this, Moira Lynch pulled her hat down a little lower.
Following the map, she came to the nearest cluster of buildings.
Because Ariel Planet was small and sparsely populated, there was no real concept of cities or villages; people simply built their homes wherever they pleased.
Those who preferred quiet found sparsely populated places to live, while those who enjoyed the bustle clustered together.
As people living on the goose that lays golden eggs, the one thing the people of Ariel Planet never lacked was money.
The only downside was that this arrangement made it difficult to find anything.
Here, Moira Lynch found another group of survivors.
Unlike the lucky orphans she’d met earlier, the people of Ariel were well aware of how coveted their planet was. As such, being highly security-conscious, nearly every household had a personal shelter.
Even with the pirates searching house by house, it was inevitable that some would slip through the cracks.
Compared to Ian, these people were much more frantic when they saw Moira Lynch.
Some of them lunged right for her, trying to grab her. Their eyes, already large, grew wider still with desperation and hunger, looking as if they might pop out of their sockets at any moment.
Startled by their frenzied state, Moira Lynch quickly backed away, then with a few leaps, jumped to the top of a tall, nearby structure.
When they saw Moira Lynch get away, the people grew even more frantic, scrambling to climb up after her on all fours, endlessly repeating, "Give me water. Give me food."
Seeing this, Moira Lynch took two water supply crates and a food supply crate from her dimensional storage. She had to get them to calm down first.
As expected, the moment they saw the crates, they eagerly tore them open and started fighting over the food and water inside.
Those who got to the food and water first paid no mind to anything else, immediately starting to wolf everything down.
Moira Lynch waited until they had eaten and drunk their fill and calmed down before she jumped down from the structure.
Just then, someone approached her and asked, "Excuse me, when will we be rescued? How much longer do we have to live like this?"
Moira Lynch couldn’t answer that. The truth was, she simply didn’t know.
Moira Lynch’s expression was apologetic. "I’m sorry, I don’t know. My mission is just to deliver supplies."
The words were cruel, but true.
An escort’s job was to escort supplies. That was their mission.
Until that mission was complete, they were not allowed to get distracted by anything else.
There was once a case where an escort, wanting to save someone captured by pirates, went forward with the rescue despite the risk to their own safety. The person was saved, but the supplies the escort was supposed to be protecting went missing.
And as it happened, that escort was transporting vital supplies: weapons and medicine.
The consequence was that while the escort saved one life, their actions led to far more deaths and injuries.
In the end, that escort was convicted of dereliction of duty and sentenced to lifelong exile.
It was hard to judge the rights and wrongs of the situation. From the escort’s perspective, they just wanted to save a life. Was saving a life wrong? Was being kind-hearted wrong? No, of course not.
The person who was rescued was lucky. She should have been grateful to that escort.
But what about all the people who died because of the escort’s actions? Did they deserve to die?
Incidents like this were not isolated. But the case where both the escort and hostage made it out was a unique exception. Most attempts resulted in losing both the people involved and the cargo.
Because of this, The Federation enacted its highest interstellar law: an escort must prioritize their delivery mission above all else.
If, in the course of a mission, an escort’s personal actions led to the loss of supplies, then all resulting damages and casualties would be placed squarely on that escort’s shoulders.
Before she left, Moira Lynch got a lot of useful information from the survivors, such as where the pirates had taken the captives and where the pirates themselves came from.
According to the survivors, the attackers were a band of interstellar pirates from the Myrmidon Galaxy, and all their members were desperate convicts with nowhere else to go.
Some of them had joined because they had no other choice, while others had been broken out of prison by the pirates themselves.
Although these interstellar pirates operated mainly in the Myrmidon Galaxy, they would occasionally wander into other star systems.
Their main targets were the Interstellar Prisons scattered across these systems.
After being broken out, most of the convicts chose to join the pirates, even those who had genuinely repented and wanted to start fresh.
They had no choice. Not joining meant death.
The name didn’t mean much to Moira Lynch, though she knew this particular band of interstellar pirates was considered one of the more ruthless crews out there.
Why not the *most* ruthless? Because above them was a crew that was in a league of its own.
And the leader of that top crew? It was none other than Raoul, the same man Moira Lynch had once met.
’No way. Was he really that big of a deal?’
Looking at the photo of the gentle, refined man, she found it impossible to connect him with the image of a wantonly cruel and wicked pirate.
’Are these two really the same person?’
’Not just someone with the same name?’
Although she couldn’t go and rescue anyone herself, Moira Lynch still transmitted the intel back. The rest was out of her hands.
She left more water and food for the survivors. At their request, Moira Lynch also left one medical supply crate and one weapons supply crate.
Initially, Moira Lynch had been reluctant to give them the weapons.
After all, from her perspective, it was better to stay here and wait for rescue than to go out and get themselves killed. But the survivors disagreed.
Their eyes were resolute as one of them said, "I know you have your own mission, but we want to rescue our friends and family."
As an outsider, Moira Lynch could make the calmest, most rational judgment. She knew the "correct" course of action, but they could not see it that way.
For some reason, when she met their eyes, something stirred within her, and her heart gave a sudden lurch.
And so, in the end, she left the medical supply crate and two weapons supply crates.
"I hope these will help you," Moira Lynch said before she departed.
