Months ago, before Terrence had ever arrived at the Hanging City, Winter Lin and her trusted squad would routinely clear any dungeon rifts that dared to appear inside the city’s perimeter.

For the absolute safety and protection of their people, they would willingly take on mission after mission, sometimes stepping into dangerous portals twice in a single week.

However, the strategic advantage of the Hanging City’s unique elevated position was slowly crumbling as the ambient mana grew denser and more violent, constantly rising directly from the dark pit beneath their territory.

Winter could only stand near the ledge, looking down into the abyss to silently ask herself: just what on earth was happening down there?

The sacred Guardian that had protected their people for generations—the divine entity whom they all believed wholeheartedly would always shield them—was starting to grow noticeably weak.

As a direct result, dangerous dungeon rifts were becoming an everyday occurrence inside the city proper. Sometimes it would just be an easy, low-tier dungeon to clear out, but other times it turned into an exhausting hassle.

And what proved to be even more frustrating was when a deadly A-Rank dungeon rift suddenly materialized near the very top of the city—the precise area that was supposed to be the absolute safest zone for everyone.

When she and her team entered that A-Rank dungeon rift, nothing turned out well. Even with the unexpected help of a passing visitor—a total stranger—they had technically managed to clear the rift, but at a horrific personal cost.

Winter lost her precious deer beast, and she lost all of her closest friends.

After returning, she stayed locked inside her quiet room, staring blankly up at the ceiling, desperately wanting to mourn for their sudden deaths. She was completely filled with a suffocating, cold silence, no longer knowing how to properly express the overwhelming emotions tearing through her heart.

She desperately wanted to cry out loud, but to her, shedding tears felt like a deeply disrespectful act toward the ultimate sacrifice her friends and beast had made. She told herself she had to be proud that they had died with honor and pride... she really should be, but her tear ducts refused to follow her strict commands.

Her vision blurred uncontrollably as her cold eyes grew wetter with every passing second. The lingering terror returned to flood her body, making her feel as though she were still trapped back in that pitch-black dungeon, completely helpless as invisible mental attacks battered her mind.

’I am such a fool... why did I have to be this self-righteous person? I got overwhelmed immediately by that mental attack, completely exposing my friends to the blast... If I hadn’t gotten so carried away by the deaths of the other tamers who entered before us... my friends would still be alive right now...’

Winter spent a full hour alone in the dark, silently sulking and mourning her tragic loss. Yet, the exact moment she was officially summoned by her family, she wiped her face and stepped out of her room looking as if nothing tragic had ever happened. Her usual calculating, cold eyes returned in full force, her expression remaining completely stoic—like someone who viewed the entire world as an open, simple book.

She refused to outwardly dwell on the trauma. She kept her fallen teammates buried deep within her heart, but she wanted them to be proud of her for surviving. And to her, truly surviving meant carrying their unfinished legacies forward on her own shoulders.

"Why are you so damn eager to go down to the lower levels of the city? You know better than anyone how dangerous it is down there," Jonas said, his voice laced with a serious, deeply concerned tone.

Winter didn’t look directly into her father’s eyes, choosing instead to focus her gaze on something neutral between the tall bookshelves lining his office wall and an ornamental trinket on his desk.

"It is my duty. The Guardian’s protection is weakening with each passing day, and I cannot just sit around idling and wait for something terrible to happen."

"I can easily send an elite team down there to investigate the Guardian’s condition," Jonas interjected firmly, instantly shutting down Winter’s proposal.

Winter slowly turned her gaze toward her father, locking her sharp, icy eyes onto his with a sudden, heavy seriousness that caused him to visibly flinch.

Taken aback by the intense pressure emanating from his daughter, Jonas found himself unable to read the emotions hidden behind her piercing, direct stare.

"This situation feels awfully familiar. This is the exact same thing you told me years ago when I said I was going to enter an dungeon rift to capture my very first beast. Now, here you are, still trying to dictate my every move."

Jonas opened his mouth, fully prepared to retort, but he abruptly stopped mid-sentence. He felt deeply struck by the quiet bite in his daughter’s words.

"It wasn’t that I didn’t want you to obtain a beast back then, but you stubbornly insisted on going into a dangerous zone without a proper chaperon," Jonas defended, his eyes darkening as he recalled the memory.

Winter simply shrugged her shoulders, her body language completely indifferent.

"And look at where I am now... I became the leader of an elite squad."

Jonas swallowed hard, his jaw tightening before a sharp slip of the tongue escaped his mouth. "A squad that is currently dead. Let me correct that—" He suddenly cut himself off, wincing slightly as he realized what he had just said. "...I’m sorry, Winter."

Winter clicked her tongue in annoyance, crossing the room to sit down heavily on the plush leather couch placed directly before his executive desk. As her elbow lightly bumped the wooden side table, the metal marble pendulums hanging nearby clattered sharply against one another, echoing through the quiet office.

"There is no need to apologize. It was entirely my fault."

"Come on now... Don’t talk like that," Jonas said softly, his voice dropping into a gentle, pleading tone.

"I am going to do whatever I want. If you refuse to give your official approval, then I will simply leave without ever telling you when or where I am departing."

Jonas’s eyes widened in sheer shock. A sudden, painful tightness gripped his chest, making it difficult for him to breathe as he scrambled to find the right words to stop her, but his mind went completely blank.

Winter had always been like this—a stubbornly just person who constantly searched for real, raw purpose despite her privileged upbringing.

She was the type of person who insists on catching her own beast through life-or-death struggles, completely ignoring her family’s capability to easily commission top-tier tamers to capture high-rank beasts for her.

Winter would willingly step into unmapped dungeon rifts without any supervision, purely to prove a point to herself that she was capable of surviving on her own merit.

She firmly believed that if she was weak, she deserved to die—but if she had a clear, unshakeable purpose, she would always find a way to survive.

And right now, Winter was actively searching for that new purpose.

As the sole survivor of her fallen squad, that immense, crushing guilt had become the primary driving force compelling her to burden herself with this dangerous dilemma.

Jonas let out a long, weary sigh, raising a hand to pinch his aching temples.

"Fine... You win. But under no circumstances will you set foot inside the Nexus. You know far better than anyone how absurdly dangerous those rift are."

Winter didn’t offer a verbal reply. She merely stared blankly into her father’s eyes before a faint, sarcastic smirk pulled at the corner of her lips.

"No way! Absolutely not! I will never agree to that suicidal plan!" Jonas immediately barked, recognizing that look on her face.

"I didn’t come in here to convince you or ask for your permission anyway," Winter said coldly, though her tone still retained a quiet, underlying sense of respect toward her father. "Just focus on handling the ongoing business affairs with the Lee Family while I am gone. I am officially withdrawing from that diplomatic scheme, and I will personally make sure the Hanging City survives this crisis."

"I am already taking care of the Lee Family situation myself! Which is precisely why I said earlier that we could simply send another group of experienced tamers down there to bolster our manpower!"

Winter let out a quiet sigh, slowly shaking her head at her father’s stubbornness.

"You just don’t understand it at all. If I don’t personally go down there and work to fix this myself... then how can I ever hold my head high and look my former squad members in the eye?"

Jonas froze, his words dying in his throat as a heavy silence descended upon the office. After a long, painful pause, he let out a defeated sigh.

"Fine... You have my permission to enter the Nexus."
