Having received a definitive answer, Perry Yates grew even more certain of her earlier suspicion.

With this in mind, Perry couldn’t help but take a few steps back, finding the perfect vantage point to watch the show that was about to unfold.

Meanwhile, Xavier Alden and his parents approached Old Master Alden to offer their birthday wishes.

Old Master Alden, however, showed little reaction.

Of all his children, only his sixth son and his youngest daughter had refused to follow the paths he’d laid out for them. This greatly displeased Old Master Alden, who was accustomed to having complete control.

Because of this displeasure, he had never been particularly fond of his granddaughter, Perry Yates, or his grandson, Xavier Alden.

If Old Master Alden had shown the slightest bit of concern for Perry Yates back then, she would never have been bullied so relentlessly.

Perry Yates’s connection to the Alden Family was tenuous to begin with, and with her parents gone, Old Master Alden—despite his displeasure—still harbored a sliver of guilt toward her. That was why she had been able to walk away.

But Xavier Alden, as a grandson, was deeply tied to the Alden Family. It was impossible for him to escape, nor could he.

The moment he walked in, Xavier Alden could feel the subtle mockery coming from his cousins.

In the past, Xavier Alden would have simply swallowed his pride and endured it. After all, even if he made a scene, the best he could hope for was for the matter to fizzle out with no resolution.

But now...

Xavier Alden glanced at them, a flicker of smug satisfaction in his eyes.

"Grandfather, this is a gift I prepared especially for you."

Then, Xavier Alden produced a gift box out of thin air, a scene strikingly similar to what Perry Yates had done moments before.

Someone in the crowd shouted, "A player!"

Feeling the envious and jealous gazes of those around him, Xavier Alden couldn’t suppress the grin spreading across his face.

He opened the gift box, revealing three cards resting inside.

Meeting Old Master Alden’s excited gaze, Xavier Alden explained, "These three cards are a Vitality Card, which can rejuvenate the body and add three months of life; a Health Card, which can instantly cure any illness; and a Life Span Card, which can directly increase your life by three years."

As Xavier Alden finished his explanation, everyone present gasped in astonishment.

This gift was exactly what the old master desired most.

Although the Alden Family had no players among them, they were well aware of The Card Tavern.

So when Old Master Alden learned that The Card Tavern possessed cards that could restore vitality and even extend one’s life, he had issued an order: obtain a Life Span Card, no matter the cost, even if it was just one.

However, with so many people vying for Life Span Cards, they were simply unable to purchase one. While the Alden Family was wealthy and influential, they were nothing compared to the truly powerful.

Thus, despite offering a handsome reward, they had yet to acquire a single Life Span Card.

The reason they had contacted Perry Yates earlier was not just because she was a player. More importantly, they assumed that since it was her maternal grandfather’s birthday, she would surely bring a gift as his granddaughter.

They figured that if Perry Yates wanted to get into Old Master Alden’s good graces, she would certainly gift him a Life Span Card.

They just never imagined Perry Yates would have no such inclination. Instead, it was Xavier Alden, the one they usually looked down on, who had quietly become a player.

Old Master Alden took the three cards, eager to use them immediately.

As three rays of light merged into Old Master Alden’s body, he was instantly overcome with a sensation of unparalleled comfort, like a parched field finally receiving a long-awaited rain.

Old Master Alden’s wizened body rapidly regained its vitality, and his once-cloudy eyes grew clear.

About two minutes later, Old Master Alden looked like a completely different person.

His salt-and-pepper hair had turned black, his stooped posture straightened, and the traditional Tang suit he was wearing now hung loosely on his frame, clearly ill-fitting.

"HAHAHA! Excellent! Truly excellent! Xavier, you are indeed Grandfather’s finest grandson!"

Old Master Alden clapped Xavier Alden on the shoulder and roared with laughter, his excitement palpable.

He hadn’t felt this sense of his body brimming with power for a very long time.

Once his excitement subsided, Old Master Alden went to change. His current clothes were no longer worthy of him. The moment Old Master Alden left, the other members of the Alden Family swarmed over.

In all their years, it was the first time Xavier Alden and his parents had ever been so popular in this house.

Whether their enthusiasm was genuine, however, was another matter entirely.

"Xavier, you really know how to make big moves quietly. To think you kept this from all of us."

The speaker was Xavier Alden’s eldest uncle.

Old Master Alden was a man with an iron grip on control. As long as he was alive, he would never relinquish power, much like the emperors of old. In this analogy, Xavier Alden’s eldest uncle was undoubtedly the Crown Prince.

With Old Master Alden’s health failing by the day, it seemed he didn’t have much time left, and Xavier’s eldest uncle was already preparing to take the reins. Who could have expected an unexpected challenger to appear and throw a wrench in the works?

Judging by Old Master Alden’s condition now, it was likely his uncle wouldn’t have a role to play for the next five or six years.

Seeing his uncle’s forced smile, Xavier Alden beamed. "Oh, not at all, Eldest Uncle. I just didn’t want to worry my parents, so I kept it quiet. You know how high the death rate is in the game, after all. Since it was Grandfather’s birthday, and I heard he was looking for a Life Span Card, it was only natural for me, as his grandson, to do my filial duty."

"That’s right, my dear older brother. Xavier is just too filial. He was afraid of worrying his mother and me."

Xavier’s father wore a faint smile as he looked provocatively at his older brother. ’He probably thinks I don’t know it was him who tried to convince Father to kick me out of the family. The old man isn’t even dead yet, and he’s already trying to eliminate his rivals. If something were to really happen to Father, my dear older brother would probably hunt me down and show no mercy. As a good-for-nothing, I’m self-aware enough to know I could never win a fight for the family inheritance. My only hope is for the old man to live a few more years. After all, as long as Father is around, he won’t let his own son starve.’

Elsewhere, having enjoyed the family melodrama, Perry Yates averted her gaze with a satisfied smile.

When the banquet officially began, Old Master Alden’s grand reappearance drew gasps of amazement and envy from the crowd, just as expected.

Many shot envious looks his way, especially after learning that Xavier Alden had given the old master three cards at once.

"I’m telling you, Old Liu, you’ve really raised a fine, filial grandson. Not at all like mine. I told him to buy me a Life Span Card, and he had the nerve to say he couldn’t get his hands on one."
