Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 178: Rejecting the Order"Stop!"
Xavier Alden cut Perry Yates off. "Just get to the point."
Hearing this, Perry Yates smiled faintly. "The point is, I can help you, and you can secure the position of the next Alden Family Head."
After listening to Perry Yates, Xavier Alden’s eyes widened in shock. He then pointed to himself. "Me? Secure the position of the next Alden Family Head?"
Perry Yates nodded. "Yes, you."
Xavier Alden patted Perry Yates’s shoulder and said with a heavy, earnest expression, "Little sis, I appreciate you thinking so highly of me, but you probably don’t know my nickname. I’m the worst of the worst—hopelessly useless. The position of Family Head? I wouldn’t even dare to dream of it."
Seeing Xavier Alden’s cowardly expression, Perry Yates looked at him with exasperation. "They call you useless and you just accept it? Can’t you prove them wrong?"
"Not a chance. I had zero interest in the Alden Family before, and I still have zero interest now."
Xavier Alden shook his head so hard it looked like a rattle drum, as if the Alden Family were some kind of terrifying beast.
"The Alden Family might be a great prize to others, but to me, it’s just... whatever. It’s a pile of trouble. Do well, and they say it’s what you’re supposed to do. Fail, and they’ll drown you in their criticism."
"Fine, then." Perry Yates shrugged.
’I was just trying to prevent The Alden Family from causing me trouble in the future by muddying their waters a bit. But all I managed to fish out was a deadbeat.’
’Oh well. It’s just a few members of The Alden Family. I can handle them.’
"In that case, I’ll be going. See you around."
Perry Yates stretched, and her figure once again vanished on the spot.
「Meanwhile, back in The Card Tavern.」
Perry Yates slowly opened her eyes and rubbed her stomach. ’I’m hungry.’
’Even though I ate a lot today, there was almost no energy in it, so it all digested not long after I ate.’
Perry Yates pulled out her phone, opened a food delivery app, and went on a huge ordering spree. She only stopped after her order total reached nearly a thousand. ’This should be enough, right?’
While waiting for a driver to accept the order, Perry Yates used the Any Door to return to her residence outside.
She hadn’t been back in a while, and the place was covered in a layer of dust.
’Might as well clean up a bit since I have nothing better to do.’
She turned on the TV for the first time in a long while, found an anime she liked, and started cleaning while she watched.
She had expected a long wait for the food, but she had barely started cleaning for five minutes when it arrived at her door—all of it at once.
She opened the door and saw the delivery driver outside, laden with bags. Just as she was about to ask how they managed it, the driver vanished on the spot.
’Alright, now I know how they did it.’
Eating her takeout and watching anime, Perry Yates enjoyed a rare, leisurely evening. When she woke up the next day, she was in an even better mood. ’Days off are the best.’
「The next day.」
Perry Yates first went to the fifth-floor workshop to check on the Card Furnace. Seeing that everything inside was stable, she then took out the item system she used to register cards.
The item system looked like a high-tech tablet, but that was just one part of it. As a four-star item, the main body of the system was spread throughout The Card Tavern, able to control every registered item within it.
Perry Yates brought up the unsorted cards and began deciding which to keep and which to release.
The Moon Attribute and Sun Attribute were rare attributes that she needed, so she rarely released them. The few she did release were to prevent people from figuring out her own card attributes.
After all, she had mostly displayed her Wood Attribute and spatial attribute so far. She hadn’t shown her Moon and Sun Attributes much—or rather, it wasn’t that she hadn’t shown them, but that others couldn’t recognize them.
For the Wood Attribute, she would assess the cards’ abilities and release most of them for others to choose.
Beyond that, there were some extremely rare attributes she wouldn’t release either, only bringing them out when someone specifically requested them. But there were certain attributes she would never give out, even if someone wanted them. Even if she didn’t fuse with them herself, she wouldn’t allow anyone else to.
Perry Yates sorted quickly, but the sheer number of cards was overwhelming.
Twenty minutes later, Perry Yates stopped, rubbing her sore wrist. ’This should be enough cards for now,’ she thought. ’I’ll sort the rest later.’
"Miss, here is an order that just came in."
The butler’s voice suddenly sounded.
Perry Yates looked at the butler coming up from downstairs, holding a wooden box. She sighed and said, "Someone’s providing their own cards this time."
The butler nodded, opened the box, and two White Cards appeared before her. Both were rare attributes: Time Attribute and Space-Time Attribute.
Cards with rare attributes were few in number, and their abilities were often stronger than those of common attributes. Correspondingly, the probability of them becoming an Advanced Card was also very low, system rewards notwithstanding.
Looking at the two cards, Perry Yates frowned. "Tell that person I’m not taking this job."
’Time Attribute and spatial attribute cards, and at four-star, no less. This person’s ambition is huge. Even I wouldn’t have dared to think like that back in the day.’
Hearing this, the butler didn’t ask for a reason and simply turned to leave with the box.
Not long after the butler went downstairs, a commotion erupted, but it quickly subsided.
By the time Perry Yates went downstairs, the first floor had already returned to normal.
Seeing Perry Yates come down, Sylas Sawyer sidled up with a gossipy look on his face. "I heard you just rejected someone’s card order. Can you tell me why?" he asked curiously.
"The person wanted a dual-attribute card with both the Time Attribute and the Space-Time Attribute," Perry Yates stated plainly.
"Is there something special about those two card types?" Sylas Sawyer didn’t understand why Perry Yates would refuse.
Other than both being rare attributes, he didn’t see anything else special about them.
"There’s nothing special about them, exactly. It’s just that a fusion of these two attributes would be a real pain to deal with. I don’t want to create such a dangerous potential enemy for myself."
"Especially since both those cards have powerful attacks that can kill without leaving a trace."
Perry Yates had no desire to be killed one day by a card she herself had put through Ascension.
Sylas Sawyer was clearly stunned by this answer. He hadn’t expected that to be the reason.
"So, you’re saying you only agree to the Ascension for all those other cards because you’re confident you could beat them?"
