Apocalypse Descends: I Win Effortlessly by Turning Trash into Treasure
Chapter 210: Cave Survival 20「Day twenty-four of the game.」
Perry Yates stretched. She had finally finished butchering the entire Cerberan Tiger. The past couple of days had been utterly exhausting.
Perry Yates had thought that as soon as she was done, Dylan Adler would immediately grab his tools and eagerly continue to "expand their territory."
To her surprise, however, Dylan Adler was unusually quiet this time.
By the time lunch rolled around, Perry Yates couldn’t hold back any longer. "Um, Captain Adler, don’t you have any plans?"
Seeing her cautiously testing the waters, Dylan Adler couldn’t help but smile. "What’s this? Weren’t you the one always telling me to stay put?"
Hearing this, Perry Yates rubbed her nose and gave a sheepish laugh. "I’m just not used to it, that’s all."
"Not used to it? Should I go dig right now, then?" As he spoke, Dylan Adler actually grabbed his tools, stood up, and made a show of starting to dig before Perry Yates stopped him.
"No, no, no! I was just kidding! I’m used to it, I’m used to it! I think the way you are right now is for the best. Perfect, in fact."
Dylan Adler found her fawning expression rather amusing.
"I’ll be honest with you. The reason I’m not digging is because I have a feeling the next few days are going to be very dangerous. It’s best if we don’t make any rash moves."
Hearing Dylan’s words, Perry Yates nodded. "That makes sense. We’re in the late game, after all, and it’ll be over in a few days. If this were a previous game, I would’ve found a safe place to hide starting from day twenty."
Hearing her say that, Dylan Adler couldn’t help but remark, "Hiding from day twenty? You must be pretty lucky, then, to always find a safe shelter."
"I don’t find one every time," Perry Yates said, cupping a cheek with her hand. "But I’ve been saving up recently. I’m planning to custom order a Shelter Card at The Card Tavern."
"A Shelter... Card? What’s that?" A flicker of confusion crossed Dylan Adler’s eyes.
"It’s a type of card. Its ability is to create a shelter. As long as you have it, you never have to worry about being left out in the open when you enter a game. I stumbled upon it by chance, but unfortunately, I didn’t have enough cards or money at the time. The card disappeared soon after it was listed—I don’t know if someone bought it or if it was just taken down."
As she spoke, Perry Yates’s voice was filled with regret.
’In reality, Perry Yates had never actually listed a card like that. In her last few games, she had been the one sheltering other players. Plus, the games had often been set in cities, which made a dedicated shelter seem a bit redundant.’
’Most importantly, two-star shelters and below were single-function. Compared to a regular tent, they were just a little bigger, sturdier, and better insulated.’
’For a shelter to be truly effective, you needed a three-star one at minimum.’
’The only reason she brought up shelters now was because of her previous trade with Evan Fuller’s group. The final payment they’d given her had consisted mostly of tent-type cards, causing her stock of them to multiply several times over. She urgently needed to offload them.’
Sure enough, when she saw Dylan Adler’s pensive expression, the corners of Perry Yates’s mouth curled into a subtle smile.
’Hook, line, and sinker.’
「Day twenty-five of the game.」
Waking up early, Perry Yates rubbed her arms and said, "Does it feel colder to you today?"
Dylan Adler nodded. "I feel it too, but the temperature hasn’t actually dropped."
As he spoke, he glanced at the thermometer Perry Yates had set aside. The reading hadn’t dropped; it was still holding at a relatively warm temperature.
That raised a question: if the temperature hadn’t dropped, why did Perry Yates feel cold?
Perry Yates picked up the thermometer, examining it from every angle. "Could it be broken?" she muttered.
’That can’t be right. This isn’t a normal thermometer; it’s a game item. How could it break?’
「Day twenty-six of the game.」
Today, Dylan Adler still didn’t "expand their territory," but he wasn’t idle, either. Instead, he spent the day reinforcing the entire cave.
Seeing this gave Perry Yates the feeling that a storm was brewing.
’Something big is going to happen in the next few days, isn’t it?’
Her mind couldn’t help but drift to the game two rounds ago, when an entire deserted island had simply sunk into the sea.
「Day twenty-seven of the game.」
Early in the morning, Perry Yates heard the sound of digging coming from somewhere nearby.
"Sounds like someone’s heading our way."
Upon hearing the familiar sound of digging, Perry Yates breathed a sigh of relief. After all, compared to unpredictable dangers, other players were a relatively safer bet.
Of course, it wasn’t a hundred percent safe, but it was late in the game. Most people just wanted to get out in one piece and were less inclined to start fights.
After a few hours, the digging finally stopped. A section of the wall vanished, revealing several disheveled players on the other side.
"This place is huge! And it’s so cool and refreshing in here."
One of them exclaimed the moment they stepped inside.
Most importantly, it was safe. They could finally get some proper rest.
"Perry Yates!"
A delighted voice rang out, startlingly loud in the quiet space.
Perry Yates looked at Nicole Fortune, an acquaintance she’d met once before. She blinked, and it took her a moment to remember who this person was.
"Perry Yates, I finally found you! I was so worried something had happened to you."
Perry Yates gently pulled her hand from Nicole Fortune’s grasp and smiled. "What could happen to me? I’m alive and well. You, on the other hand..."
Her words trailed off as she glanced at the companions behind Nicole Fortune. Besides Nicole, there were two men and two women—a different team composition from the last time she’d seen them. They had new people.
Understanding the unspoken question in Perry’s words, a flash of sorrow crossed Nicole Fortune’s eyes. She said nothing, but her silence spoke volumes.
Perry Yates had no intention of probing further. In her eyes, it was fine as long as these people kept to themselves and didn’t cause any trouble.
Ever since the newcomers arrived, Perry Yates noticed it didn’t feel as cold anymore. This was probably the benefit of having more people around—more body heat.
Perry Yates ducked behind Dylan Adler, putting on a bashful act. "There are only a few days left in the game," she said. "Why don’t you all just stay here? The temperature is stable, and the mushrooms growing around here are edible."
Hearing this, Nicole Fortune’s and her companions’ eyes lit up instantly. "Really? We can really stay here?"
