Feng JiaMin’s eyes widened in surprise, as if Xie Ning were some lunatic spouting bizarre words.
"No." Feng JiaMin came to her senses, a laugh of indignant amusement escaping her. "Miss Xie, please don’t misunderstand, alright? We’re all bros here. We just haven’t seen each other in over a year and really miss him. We just wanted to catch up. Uh, you don’t actually think we’re trying to steal your boyfriend, do you?"
Feng JiaMin couldn’t help but laugh as she spoke.
"Isn’t that exactly what you’re doing?" Xie Ning laughed too, a faint, mocking smile playing on her lips. "If you really considered Gu Chen a friend, you wouldn’t show up at such an inappropriate time using ’getting a drink’ as an excuse."
"No one here is a fool. Miss Feng, was it? Are you a fool?"
"You." Feng JiaMin froze, and the smile on her face vanished, replaced by a dark expression.
"Do you know what today is? Today is the day our Starfire Team is meeting and having dinner with Gu Chen’s parents for the first time. What are you trying to do? Gang up, bring a whole crowd, and show up specifically to embarrass me?"
Feng Lijian was startled by the look on Gu Chen’s face and quickly tried to smooth things over. "No, no, Sister-in-law, you’ve misunderstood. We..."
"Misunderstood what? I think my girlfriend is absolutely right." Gu Chen cut him off with a cold laugh. "You didn’t come here today to crash my girlfriend’s event; you came here to sever ties with me for good!"
"Chen." Feng JiaMin’s eyes widened in shock. "We didn’t..."
"Feng Lijian, take your troublemaking little sister and get out of here right now. Don’t ever show your faces to me again."
Zhai Ruobai muttered under his breath from the crowd, "See? I told you guys not to come and cause trouble, but you just had to push your luck!"
"And you!" Gu Chen roared at Zhai Ruobai. "Get lost. If you ever leak my whereabouts to them again, you can stay away from me too."
Terrified, Zhai Ruobai scrambled away, begging for mercy. "Bro, bro, I was wrong, I was wrong!"
Feng JiaMin stamped her foot. "Chen, you’re being so unreasonable! We just today..."
Before she could finish, Feng Lijian yanked her back.
Feng Lijian was much more perceptive than his sister. He knew that today’s incident had seriously offended Gu Chen.
He quickly turned to Qin Qiyun and her husband, stammering out a greeting.
"Chen, we were inconsiderate today. We’ll come by another day to formally apologize." Feng Lijian gave a bitter smile, bowed, and immediately pulled his sister away to leave.
Feng JiaMin wanted to protest further, but a warning glare from Feng Lijian silenced her. She could only leave, stomping her foot resentfully.
’She really hadn’t expected Xie Ning to cause such a scene right then and there, in front of so many people, with absolutely no regard for their pride.’
The group, chased away from Gu Chen’s doorstep, trudged dejectedly to an underground bar.
They had just sat down when a couple of the young men spoke up, their faces full of dissatisfaction. "Feng JiaMin, what kind of rotten idea was that? Look what you’ve done. You’ve seriously pissed off the big bro. Great, now we can’t even be friends anymore."
"Hey, when I proposed this plan, you all agreed to it." Feng JiaMin grabbed a bottle and slammed it on the glass coffee table. "And now you’re all blaming me? What’s that about? Are we friends or not?"
"Sigh." The group of young people slumped onto the sofas, their expressions as grim as if they were at a funeral.
"What’s with you guys?" Feng JiaMin forcefully kicked one of the young men. "Chen was just saying that because he was angry. Do you really think he’d cut us off for some woman?"
"Don’t be ridiculous." Feng JiaMin poured a glass and downed it in one gulp. "I refuse to believe it."
"Jia Min, can you please stop causing trouble?" Feng Lijian glared at his sister, displeased. "In a couple of days, buy a gift and come with me to the Xie family’s home to apologize."
"Apologize?" Feng JiaMin shrieked. "What did I do wrong? She’s the one who’s petty, okay? It was such a small thing, and now she’s caused a rift between Chen and all of us. That woman is a real piece of work."
"Big brother, don’t you dare drag me into that farce. I’m not apologizing. I did nothing wrong."
Mo Wanrong, sitting to the side, reached out and tugged on Feng JiaMin’s arm. "Jia Min, don’t say that."
"I’m not wrong." Feng JiaMin shook off her hand and angrily downed another glass. "I’ll go talk to Chen myself tomorrow. I’ll take full responsibility for what I did. On what grounds is he taking his anger out on all of you?"
"Jia Min!" Feng Lijian’s head throbbed. He raised a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. "I need you to behave yourself for a couple of days. Leave this to me. Don’t go off and do things on your own again."
"Brother!"
"Enough. It’s decided." Feng Lijian glared his sister into submission.
...
"Were you embarrassed by what happened today?" Xie Ning stood at the doorway, tilting her head up slightly to look at Gu Chen.
’After all, her sharp words had thoroughly humiliated Gu Chen’s friends on the spot.’
"How could I be? If you hadn’t held me back, I would’ve gone and punched that Feng kid. So tactless. I never realized they were so brainless." Gu Chen pulled her to his side. "Are you angry?"
Xie Ning nodded. "I am pretty angry. People like you, the young masters and misses of high society... I guess you’ve probably never had to consider other people’s feelings much before."
Gu Chen’s gaze immediately grew wary. He hugged his girlfriend and rocked her gently. "Nonsense. I’m not like them."
’Gu Chen’s mind was racing: Ningning is trying to create a class divide! I can’t let her keep thinking like this.’
"Don’t worry about them." Gu Chen nuzzled her forehead. "I’m sorry you were unhappy today. It’s your boyfriend’s fault."
"How about I give you a special gift tomorrow?"
Xie Ning couldn’t help but chuckle. "There’s no need. As long as that brother of yours, Feng, doesn’t come looking for trouble with me again..."
"Of course there’s a need! There is, there is!" Gu Chen interrupted her. "I’ve had people preparing this gift for you for over a year. It’s just been waiting for you to come and get it!"
"I’ll take you to see it tomorrow. You’ll definitely love it." As he spoke, he planted a loud kiss on her forehead. "In the future, if those punks are disrespectful to you again, you don’t have to worry about my feelings. Just beat them up."
"And don’t worry about whether you hurt them or not. Your boyfriend will take care of it for you!"
Xie Ning pressed her lips together and smiled softly.
「The next day」
Gu Chen came to pick her up early in the morning, excitedly taking her to a vehicle modification factory inside the base.
Before her was a modified RV. Its exterior looked especially sturdy and durable.
The door was fitted with an electronic lock, and even getting on board required facial recognition.
Xie Ning walked around the vehicle several times and was struck by how incredibly thoughtful her boyfriend’s gift was.
"When I had this vehicle modified, I was thinking that in the future, even if we were on the road, Grandpa and Grandma could be more comfortable."
"But now you have your farmstead Space." He leaned in and whispered in her ear, "So this isn’t really necessary anymore."
