The tension that had surrounded the frozen river fork finally began to dissipate, replaced by the organized hum of heavy machinery. The skirmish was over, and the immediate area had been cleared of threat. Han Zheng stood by the idling engine of his truck, the exhaust blooming like white clouds in the cold air. He turned to Lu Feng, who was barking orders to his remaining men as they secured their gear.

"Lu Feng," Han Zheng called out, his deep voice cutting through the whistling mountain wind. "Tell your squad to pack into your carrier and follow directly behind my vehicle. Don’t lose the tail. The tracks through the lower pass are treacherous, and the snow drifts are deep enough to swallow a chassis if you take the wrong angle."

Lu Feng nodded, wiping a layer of frozen condensation from his goggles. "Understood, Commander. Guo Jian, get the men loaded up! We’re moving out on Han Zheng’s mark!"

Instead of climbing back into the cramped, gear-stuffed cabin of his own squad’s large armored vehicle, Lu Feng walked over to Han Zheng’s truck, pulling open the heavy passenger door and hoisting himself inside. He slammed the door shut against the biting cold, letting out a long, ragged breath as the vehicle’s internal heating system immediately blasted warm air against his frozen face.

Han Zheng engaged the gears, the heavy tires grinding rhythmically against the thick ice sheets as they began the drive back toward the sanctuary. The large carrier of the Iron Falcon squad fell into perfect formation directly behind them, its headlights piercing through the pale, swirling mountain mist.

For the first few miles, the drive proceeded in a comfortable, familiar silence. The two men had served together in the elite divisions of the old world, and there was an unspoken understanding between them that required no empty filler words. Han Zheng kept his unblinking eyes fixed on the white, jagged horizon, constantly checking the mirrors to ensure Lu Feng’s team was maintaining a safe trailing distance through the shifting ravines.

Lu Feng relaxed back into the passenger seat, unzipping the heavy collar of his winter jacket. He turned his head to look at Han Zheng, a rare, softer expression breaking through his features.

"Zheng, there’s someone traveling with us in that carrier behind us," Lu Feng said, his tone shifting away from his rigid demeanor. "My youngest sister, Lu Ning. When the capital fell and our old division shattered during the initial panic, I couldn’t leave her behind to face the chaos alone. She was too young, completely unequipped for the apocalypse. She’s been traveling with the us ever since."

Han Zheng didn’t take his eyes off the snowy path ahead, his hands guiding the steering wheel with effortless precision. "Of course. If she’s your family, she’s welcome in the facility. We have the space, and she’ll be warm. You don’t have to worry about her safety here."

Lu Feng let out a low, rough laugh, shaking his head as he clapped his glove against the dashboard. "You don’t understand, old friend. She already knows everything about you. A couple of years ago, back when we were still stationed at the southern base, she spotted an old photo of you and me standing together on my desk. She kept asking about the ’silent commander’ who ran the black ops division, entirely fascinated by your record. I think she practically memorized your entire service file before the world went dark. When she sees you in person, it’s going to shock her."

Han Zheng simply dismissed the words with an amused chuckle. "She was probably just wondering why her brother was standing next to someone twice his size. Let’s get these vehicles inside before the frost settles. The weather out here doesn’t grant extensions."

As the massive, snow-covered ridges of the sanctuary finally came into view, Han Zheng reached up, tapping his headset to patch directly into the facility’s secure frequency loop.

"Command deck, this is Han Zheng," he spoke into the comms. "We are approaching the primary gate. The scouting mission was a complete success. We have friendly company—Captain Lu Feng and the remaining survivors of the Iron Falcon unit. Open the main blast gates."

On the other end of the line, Lin Qing’s voice came through instantly, calm and measured. She didn’t waste a single second asking a barrage of unnecessary questions over an open frequency. "Understood, Initiating passive override now. The gates are opening. Welcome home."

The massive doors of the research center groaned under the weight of the moving external ice, parting slowly to reveal the bright, sterile warmth of the subterranean loading bay. Han Zheng’s truck rolled inside, followed closely by Lu Feng’s large squad carrier. The engines let out a final, heavy hiss as they parked, and the outer blast gates sealed shut behind them with a thud, completely shutting out the brutal wind.

Lin Qing was already waiting on the lower observation platform. She stood with her hands tucked neatly into the wide pockets of her jacket, her eyes immediately surveying the new arrivals. Beside her stood Zhou Ming and Dr. Zhou, both holding digital medical tablets to begin the standard baseline intake diagnostics.

Han Zheng stepped down from the cabin, tossing his cloak onto a nearby equipment bench. He walked directly toward Lin Qing, a subtle ease settling into his rigid posture the moment he reached her side.

"Lu Feng, this is my wife, Lin Qing," Han Zheng announced, his deep voice carrying a distinct note of quiet pride as he gestured toward her. "Lin Qing, this is Captain Lu Feng. We served together before."

"It’s an honor, Sister-in-law," Lu Feng said, stepping forward with an appreciative nod, his respect for her immediate and apparent. "Your chemical inhibitors completely turned the tide for us out there on the ice. We owe you our lives."

"We protect our own, Captain," Lin Qing replied, her expression polite but inherently observant as she offered a brief nod of greeting.

Before the conversation could continue, the side door of the second vehicle clicked open with a sharp metallic echo.

A young woman stepped down onto the floor of the loading bay. Lu Ning was slender, her pale features framed by straight dark hair that fell loosely around her shoulders, her thick winter jacket looking slightly too large for her petite frame.

She looked around the massive loading bay with a wide-eyed, hesitant curiosity, her demeanor projecting a fragile, sheltered shyness that seemed entirely out of place among the hardened, battle-scarred soldiers of the Iron Falcon Squad.

As she caught sight of Han Zheng standing beneath the bright bay lights, her eyes lit up with an intense, unmistakable recognition. She took a step toward him, a soft, tentative smile forming on her lips, her posture shifting as if she were stepping toward someone she had idolized from afar for years. But as her gaze shifted to Lin Qing—and she registered the seamless, unified way the woman stood directly beside the commander—the smile instantly faltered.

Lin Qing’s gaze didn’t miss the subtle, psychological shift. She noticed the exact second Lu Ning’s posture stiffened, her small fingers tightening anxiously around the worn strap of her canvas travel pack, an undisguised wave of discomfort washing over her features the moment Han Zheng uttered the word ’wife’.

Dr. Zhou stepped forward, breaking the brief, heavy silence as she tapped her digital clipboard. "Commander, Lin Qing, we’ve completed the initial external scans on the rest of the fireteam—Guo Jian, Yang Jun, and Zhao Lei. Their vitals are stable, though they are clearly suffering from mild caloric deficits and prolonged exposure. Fortunately, there are no signs of viral infection from the cold variants they encountered."

Dr. Zhou turned toward Lu Feng, offering a reassuring, warm smile. "To ensure a smooth transition, we won’t be crowding everyone into the residential suite on the second floor, as those quarters are currently quite full. Instead, we have plenty of unoccupied, fully heated rooms available in the residential suite where I am currently staying right now. It features its own independent kitchen facility, so it will give you more than enough space to settle in comfortably."

Lu Feng nodded, visibly relieved. "That sounds perfect, Doctor. We deeply appreciate the hospitality."

"Wait."

The sharp interruption cut directly through the quiet murmuring of the loading bay. Lu Ning stepped forward, her eyes locking directly onto Han Zheng’s face with a look of sudden, hesitant confusion.

"Are we not staying together?" Lu Ning asked, her voice tight and slightly strained as she addressed Han Zheng directly, completely ignoring everyon else. "Brother always said on the road that if we ever found your unit, we would be operating as one single family. Why are we being sent to a separate level of the building?"

The blunt, borderline demanding question hung heavily in the air of the bay. Lu Feng frowned deeply, his brow furrowing as he looked at his sister in sudden surprise and embarrassment. He quickly stepped in, his hand catching Lu Ning’s elbow with a firm, warning pressure to pull her back into line.

"Ning’er, that’s enough," Lu Feng muttered quickly, offering an apologetic glance to Han Zheng and Lin Qing. "We are guests in this sanctuary, and we follow the housing arrangements provided. The residential suite sounds perfect. My men are thoroughly exhausted, and a dedicated space is exactly what they need right now."

Lu Ning bit her lower lip, a dark flush of embarrassment creeping up her neck as she dropped her gaze to the floor, her fingers tightening around her bag strap. She didn’t say another word, but the sudden tension in her posture made her hesitation obvious to everyone in the room.

"Zhou Ming, take Captain Lu’s men to the residential sector," Lin Qing instructed quietly, her tone calm and professional as she smoothly defused the awkward moment. "Ensure they are provided with full thermal garments, clean linens, and standard rations so they can recuperate properly."

"Right away," Zhou Ming replied, gesturing for the soldiers to follow him toward the elevator. The squad members nodded respectfully to Han Zheng and Lin Qing as they passed, entirely eager to escape the suffocating social friction that had suddenly filled the room.

Lu Feng guided his hesitant sister toward the elevator, pausing briefly before Han Zheng. "I’ll get my people settled in and run through our inventory data. Let’s reconvene tomorrow morning to sync our tracking maps."

"Tomorrow at dawn," Han Zheng agreed, offering a firm nod.

As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing the Iron Falcon vanguard within the shafts, the massive staging bay fell into a ringing quiet. The automated scrubbing systems droned softly in the ceiling, filtering out the residual smell of diesel fuel and mountain frost brought in by the armored vehicles.

Han Zheng and Lin Qing turned away from the bay, walking side by side down the central corridor as they headed back toward their own quarters. They were still just getting close, their steps synchronized but maintaining a respectful, grounded distance that reflected the steady growth of their bond.

Lin Qing glanced up at Han Zheng’s frame, her lips twitching with a sudden, faint amusement. "Well, Commander, it seems your fan club has officially arrived. I suppose I should be grateful she didn’t ask for your autograph right away."

Han Zheng stopped in his tracks, blinking down at her in absolute, utter surprise. He stared at her for a fraction of a second, entirely caught off guard by the unexpectedly lame joke, before a deep, booming laugh rumbled from his chest—a sound so rare and unforced that it echoed loudly against the walls of the corridor.

"I don’t think my service file includes an autograph section, Lin Qing," Han Zheng managed to say, a lingering smile softening his face as they resumed walking.

Lin Qing chuckled softly, her posture relaxing completely. "Good. Because I don’t think we have the paperwork to clear it. Jokes aside, her brother seems like a highly capable asset, and his squad increases our defensive capabilities significantly. That is what matters most. As long as she settles into the routine without causing a disruption, we will give her time to adjust to how we run things here."

Han Zheng looked down at her, his admiration for her grounded pragmatism and lighthearted resilience deepening. "Agreed. Let’s head back to the suite. The children are waiting, and I want to ensure everything is secure before the evening."

Lin Qing nodded, and together they walked into the warmth of the inner sanctuary, ready to face whatever new variables their growing kingdom would bring.
