Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 119: Whispers and Warped TruthsOutside the thick glass, Lu Ning stood frozen, her heart thumping against her ribs as she stared at the weeping man on the cold concrete floor. The silence of the lower wing was broken only by the low, muffled sound of his desperate sobs.
Lin Tao pressed his tear-streaked face near the metal grill. His mind worked at lightning speed as he took in her bewildered expression, instantly recognizing that she was not one of the facility’s core inner circle.
"P-Please..." Lin Tao raspily choked out, his voice trembling with an agonizing, pitiful cadence. "Don’t run away... please, don’t leave me in here! I haven’t done anything wrong!"
Lu Ning hesitated, her hands hovering near her chest as she took a cautious half-step closer to the window. "Who are you? Why are you locked here like a prisoner?"
Lin Tao let out a bitter, heartbroken sob, pressing his dirty hands against the glass as tears streamed freely down his cheeks.
"My name is Lin Tao," he wept, looking up at her with wide, pleading eyes. "I’m... I’m Lin Qing’s cousin. Her own blood family."
Lu Ning’s eyes widened in genuine shock. "Lin Qing’s cousin?"
"Yes! Her cousin!" Lin Tao gasped, clutching at the door frame as if trying to hold onto her through the steel door. "When the world ended and the cities fell apart, I suffered through absolute hell trying to find her. I trekked through miles of frozen wasteland, starving in the snow, holding onto one single thought—that if I could just reach my cousin, my own flesh and blood, I would finally be safe!"
He buried his face in his hands, letting out a pitiful, shuddering cry before forcing himself to look up at her again, his eyes filled with a look of tragic betrayal.
"I came to this research center," Lin Tao cried out softly, his voice cracking with emotion. "I knocked on those gates and begged her for sanctuary. I wasn’t asking for luxury... I just asked for a warm corner and a scrap of food to survive alongside my family. But do you know what she did?"
Lu Ning shook her head slowly, completely captivated by his words. "What did she do?"
"She turned me away!" Lin Tao shouted softly, a bitter, broken laugh escaping his lips. "She looked at her own cousin through the monitor and coldly refused to open the gates! She cast me out into the cold wind like garbage!"
He paused, leaning closer to the glass, his tone dropping into a conspiratorial, pain-filled whisper that made Lu Ning instinctively lean in closer to listen.
"I had nowhere to go," Lin Tao whispered, fresh tears spilling over his eyelashes. "So I stayed outside near the valley, huddled in a freezing cave alongside a small group of helpless survivors—innocent people who were just trying to hold on to life. We weren’t a threat to anyone. We were just starving human beings trying not to freeze to death in the mountains."
Lin Tao’s expression suddenly twisted into a display of intense heartbreak.
"And then... few days ago... she went even further," Lin Tao sobbed, slamming his fist weakly against the door panel. "She couldn’t just leave us alone. She went to Han Zheng and spun a web of dark, wicked lies! She convinced him that our small, helpless group of survivors was a dangerous mercenary element targeting the base! She asked Han Zheng to attack and capture me! They ambushed our camp, overwhelmed us with weapons, killed or scattered the others, and dragged me back here in chains to lock me in this cold concrete box!"
Lu Ning felt a sudden, sharp coldness bloom in her chest. The story was so vivid, so filled with raw emotion, that it sent her mind spinning. But a lingering thread of logic made her pause, her brow furrowing in confusion.
"Wait..." Lu Ning said, her voice laced with deep hesitation. "Why would Han Zheng do something like that? He’s a high-ranking military officer, an honorable commander. My brother served with him for years—he’s not a tyrant who attacks innocent survivors or locks up civilians without reason."
Lin Tao’s sharp, calculating mind picked up on her words instantly. He caught the exact nuance in her voice—her protective respect for Han Zheng, and her reluctance to attribute any cruelty to the commander.
In a split second, Lin Tao pivoted his entire narrative, weaponizing her reverence for Han Zheng.
"Because Han Zheng doesn’t know the truth!" Lin Tao cried out softly, pressing his hands flat against the glass as if pleading for her understanding. "He is an honorable man! A noble soldier! But he is being completely deceived! Lin Qing has bewitched him—she has wrapped him around her finger and manipulated his fierce protective instincts!"
Lu Ning’s breath caught in her throat. She hung on every word, her fingers tightening around her clothes as the narrative began to align perfectly with her hidden jealousy.
"Before the apocalypse...Lin Qing had so many dark scandals," Lin Tao whispered earnestly, his face painted with a look of desperate sincerity. "Dirty financial dealings, dark personal history that would ruin her reputation forever! She was terrified that if I stayed alive, if I had five minutes alone with Han Zheng, I would reveal what kind of woman she truly was before the world fell apart!"
Lin Tao fell onto his knees again, bowing his head against the lower frame of the door in an posture of absolute ruin.
"She made up horrific lies about me to protect her secrets," Lin Tao wept, his voice muffled against the metal. "She told Han Zheng I was a dangerous criminal, a traitor who would endanger the base! She manipulated that brave commander into acting as her personal executioner and jailer! Han Zheng thinks he’s protecting his home, but in reality, he is being lied to every single day by the snake sitting in his own bed!"
The words echoed through the space, sinking deep into Lu Ning’s mind. Everything Lin Tao was saying validated the unspoken, ugly feelings that had been brewing inside her since yesterday.
’She lied to him...’ Lu Ning thought, her pulse racing as her mind constructed a dramatic narrative. ’She’s using his strength to hide her own wicked past...’
Lin Tao slowly raised his head, looking up at Lu Ning through the glass with desperate eyes. "I’m begging you... please! You look like a good person who understands right from wrong! You have to help me get out of here! If I can just get out of this cell, if I can stand before Han Zheng and present the proof, I can expose her! I can save him from her web of lies!"
Lu Ning looked down at the heavy electronic keypad mounted beside the door frame. A glowing red digital pad flickered back at her, requiring an encrypted security code or an authorized keycard.
"I... I can’t," Lu Ning stammered, taking a step back with her hands raised helplessly. "Look at the lock. It’s an advanced keypad. I don’t know the access code, and I don’t have a keycard even if I wanted to open it."
Lin Tao’s eyes flashed with a momentary, hidden frustration, but he quickly covered it with a look of heartbreaking disappointment.
"Then please... find a way," Lin Tao pleaded in a desperate, hushed voice. "Keep your eyes open. Look for a keycard, listen for the code when the soilders pass by, or find a way to distract them! I don’t know how much longer I can survive in this cold room. Please... save me!"
Lu Ning looked at his tear-streaked face, her heart torn between the strict rules her brother had told her to follow and the tragic story she had just heard.
"Just... just wait," Lu Ning whispered hurriedly, checking over her shoulder to make sure no soilders were approaching down the hallway. "Don’t make any noise. I’ll think of something... I’ll try to find a way to help you later."
"Thank you... thank you!" Lin Tao choked out, slumping back against the wall as if utterly exhausted by the effort.
Without another word, Lu Ning turned on her heel and hurried away down the corridor, her shoes moving quickly against the linoleum as she fled the area.
Her head was spinning in a chaotic storm of conflicting emotions. A small, rational voice in the back of her mind whispered that she shouldn’t trust a man trapped in a holding cell—that a prisoner would say anything to secure his freedom. But that quiet voice was completely drowned out by the overwhelming emotional impact of his tears, his pitiful condition, and above all, how neatly his story fit into her existing resentment toward Lin Qing.
’He is so pitiful...’ she reasoned with herself as she navigated the winding halls back toward the primary residential suite. ’He was weeping for his life. A liar couldn’t fake tears like that... and why would he praise Han Zheng so much if he was an enemy?’
In Lu Ning’s mind, the narrative was rapidly solidifying into truth: Lin Qing was a manipulative, cold-hearted woman who was using Han Zheng’s authority to silence her family and hide her dirty past.
Lost in her dark, spiraling thoughts, Lu Ning rounded a wide corner near the junction of the primary residential corridor.
She slammed to a halt.
Walking toward her down the brightly lit hall were Lin Qing and Dr. Zhou. Both women were wearing clean, white medical coats over their winter clothing, holding digital tablets as they carried on a quiet, focused conversation about pharmaceutical inventory levels.
Lu Ning’s heart leaped into her throat. She stepped back against the wall, her posture stiffening instantly as her hands clenched into tight, defensive fists at her sides.
Lin Qing paused her conversation with Dr. Zhou as they drew near, her gaze shifting over to Lu Ning. Because Lin Qing was entirely focused on the complex logistical numbers of their medical supply line, her mind was occupied with operational matters. She gave Lu Ning a brief, neutral nod of acknowledgement—a standard, polite gesture—without stopping to initiate small talk, continuing her steady stride.
To Lu Ning, whose head was currently filled with Lin Tao’s dramatic accusations, that brief, impassive nod felt like a deliberate, arrogant snub. It looked like the cold condescension of a woman who considered herself superior to everyone around her.
Before Lin Qing fully passed her, however, she paused her footsteps, turning her head slightly to address the younger girl.
"Lu Ning," Lin Qing said, her tone calm, measured, and entirely practical. "The lower corridors aren’t fully mapped for guests yet, and several auxiliary rooms house active high-voltage conduits. For your own safety, try not to wander too far from the primary residential wing unless your brother or someone else is accompanying you."
It was a reasonable safety warning intended to keep an unfamiliar guest out of dangerous utility shafts.
In Lu Ning’s warped, prejudiced mindset, the warning sounded like something entirely different. It sounded like a veiled threat—an arrogant warden asserting her control, warning her to stay away from the lower levels so she wouldn’t stumble upon the dirty secrets locked inside the rooms.
A hot, prickling wave of intense irritation and burning resentment flushed up Lu Ning’s neck, turning her cheeks red. She bit the inside of her lip so hard she nearly drew blood, forcing her chin up as she offered a stiff, utterly insincere nod.
"I understand," Lu Ning muttered through tight lips.
Lin Qing offered a final, brief nod, turning back to Dr. Zhou to seamlessly resume their discussion about antibiotic storage temperatures as they walked down the hall toward the medical bay.
Lu Ning stood alone in the center of the corridor, turning around to watch Lin Qing’s retreating figure. She stared at her composed, elegant posture, her dark eyes filled with a bitter, unyielding resolve.
The seed of doubt planted by Lin Tao had blossomed into a firm conviction. In Lu Ning’s eyes, the elegant woman standing at Han Zheng’s side was nothing more than a dangerous, manipulative fraud—and Lu Ning was determined to find a way to shatter her illusion before it was too late.
