Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 148: Instinctive SynergyInside the unsealed entry hall of the depot, the atmosphere remained frozen in a fragile, razor-thin equilibrium. The lingering scent of ozone, damp concrete, and age-old dust drifted through the open breach, mixing with the sharp, subterranean cold.
Even with the initial warning to stand down, Song Yan remained wary. His eyes narrowed as he took in the tactical gear, the heavy body armor, and the suppressed aura of raw physical force radiating from Han Zheng.
The moment Han Zheng took a step past the threshold toward Lin Qing, Song Yan shifted his weight, placing himself firmly in front of her with his right hand resting hovering inches above his holstered sidearm.
"Hold it right there," Song Yan demanded, his voice crisp and sharp in the enclosed hall. "I don’t care who you are. You don’t just force open a bunker and march straight toward our people without any explanation."
Behind Song Yan, several of the depot’s security guards tightened their fingers along their rifle guards, caught between their allegiance to Song Yan’s caution and the earlier command to hold fire.
Guo Jiong, standing directly beside the barricade at the center of the hall, immediately raised a hand to silence the guards again. He looked past Song Yan’s shoulder, taking in the towering frame of Commander Han Zheng and the familiar faces of Lieutenant Chen and Old Wang standing behind him.
A look of sudden, profound relief washed over Guo Jiong’s face.
"Song Yan, back down! Lower your weapon right now," Guo Jiong commanded, his voice cutting through the tension like a hammer strike. He stepped around the edge of the crate barrier, putting his own body between the raised firearms and Han Zheng’s unit.
Song Yan glanced back, frowning in deep confusion. "Guo Jiong? What are you doing? We don’t know these men—"
"I know them," Guo Jiong interrupted firmly, placing a heavy hand on Song Yan’s shoulder to force his arm down. "And so does everyone who made it out of the village with me. This is Commander Han Zheng."
Guo Jiong turned to address the lingering depot guards, his voice ringing clearly off the damp stone walls. "Stand down, all of you! These aren’t scavengers or hostile raiders. Back in the early weeks when the world first collapsed, Commander Han and his squad were the ones who helped me and my villagers. They are good people."
Guo Jiong looked directly at Song Yan, his tone softening with absolute certainty. "He isn’t a threat to Lin Qing. They belong to the exact same unit."
Song Yan froze, his gaze shifting between Guo Jiong’s earnest expression and the stoic face of the commander standing before him. Slowly, the tension drained from Song Yan’s shoulders. He released the grip on his sidearm and took a half-step to the side, opening the clear line of sight between Han Zheng and Lin Qing.
"My apologies, Commander," Song Yan murmured quietly, his eyes lowering. "We’ve had to guard this sector against all kinds of threats. I was only trying to protect her."
"You did your duty," Han Zheng replied, his voice dark, calm, and utterly devoid of hostility. "I would have expected nothing less from anyone guarding this threshold."
Han Zheng kept his composure locked tight, though every muscle in his frame burned with a deep, quiet intensity. He took two measured steps forward, his boots crunching softly against the grit on the floor, stopping just a few feet away from Lin Qing.
He didn’t make a sudden movement, nor did he reach out to grab her. He simply stood there, absorbing the reality of her presence. She was alive. Slightly pale and quiet but entirely intact.
Lin Qing lowered her sidearm slightly, resting it in a low-ready position. Her eyes met Han Zheng’s, tracking every line of his face, the faint layer of grey stone dust on his shoulders, and the quiet intensity in his dark gaze. In her mind, there were no names, no dates, and no structural memories of their shared past.
Yet, as he stood before her, the phantom tension that had coiled tight in her chest since the unsealing of the door completely dissolved. Her breathing leveled out. Her pulse, which had been elevated, settled into a steady, grounded rhythm. Her body recognized his presence with absolute, unshakeable familiarity, long before her mind could make sense of it.
"Commander," Lieutenant Chen spoke up softly from behind, stepping into the bay alongside Xiao Li and Sun Hao. "The perimeter seam is cleared, but the thermal sensors on the outer frame are picking up rapid motion."
Before Han Zheng could answer or address Lin Qing directly, a sharp, piercing chime echoed from the main console behind Guo Jiong. The green status monitors suddenly flashed a blinding, rhythmic crimson.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
"Seismic alert!" Sun Hao shouted, unslung his field rig in an instant and tapping rapidly into the depot’s local sensor array. "Commander! The kinetic pulses we used to shatter the top shale layer outside transmitted deep into the cliff face! Something pulled a mass of subterranean burrowers out of hibernation—they’ve breached an unsealed auxiliary ventilation shaft thirty meters down the eastern corridor!"
The damp concrete floor beneath their boots began to vibrate with a low, rhythmic grinding sound. From the dark access tunnel leading toward the lower sub-levels, the sound of wet, tearing claws against stone echoed loudly, accompanied by the foul, sulfurous stench of underground rot.
Guo Jiong didn’t waste a second. "Guards! Fall back and secure the inner bulkhead! Do not let anything push into the civilian quarters!"
"Xiao Li, shift armor to full coverage and anchor the central choke point!" Han Zheng ordered instantly, his instincts snapping into place without a fraction of a second’s delay. "Old Wang, take the high ledge on the pipe rack! Chen, suppress the right tunnel seam!"
In less than three seconds, the room transformed from a quiet meeting ground into an active, high-lethal kill zone.
Xiao Li stepped directly to the center of the dark access corridor, his skin instantly hardening into a thick, mineralized plate of dark granite armor.
He slammed his heavy shield onto the stone floor, creating an immovable anchor against the incoming tide. Old Wang scrambled up a rusted iron ladder with veteran speed, leveling his heavy sniper rifle from the overhead utility pipes.
Through the darkness of the lower tunnel, the first wave of mutated subterranean burrowers erupted into the light. They were terrifying, pale creatures the size of wolves, covered in slick, chitinous plates with blind, milky eyes and massive, shovel-like claws capable of tearing through solid masonry.
SCREEECH!
A cluster of four burrowers lunged straight out of the dark, aiming directly for the gap between Xiao Li’s shield and the side wall.
Without needing a single order, a spoken cue, or a moment of tactical deliberation, Lin Qing moved.
She didn’t fall back behind the barricade with the depot guards. Instead, she took three swift, fluid steps forward, placing her left shoulder perfectly parallel to Han Zheng’s right flank. Her posture sank into a flawless, low-center combat stance, her sidearm coming up in a rock-steady two-handed grip.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Lin Qing fired three rapid, disciplined shots. Each round punched clean through the soft, unarmored eye sockets of the leading three burrowers mid-air, dropping them instantly into the dust at Xiao Li’s boots before their claws could even graze the granite shield.
Beside her, Han Zheng didn’t even turn his head to check her position. He knew she was there. He felt the exact rhythm of her movement as if they were two halves of a single, fluid machine.
Han Zheng thrust his right palm forward, unleashing a compressed, invisible wave of kinetic force through the center of the tunnel. The sheer air pressure detonated like a localized cannon shell, pulverizing the second wave of creatures against the stone walls in a spray of dark, frozen fluid.
"Flanker on the upper seam!" Old Wang shouted from the pipes above, his rifle cracking once—THWACK—shattering the heavy chitin shell of a burrower crawling along the ceiling.
The wounded creature tumbled downward, snapping wildly as it fell directly toward Han Zheng’s exposed blind spot.
Lin Qing didn’t hesitate. Without breaking her stance or looking away from her primary sector, she smoothly pivoted her wrist upward, extending her arm across Han Zheng’s chest frame, and pulled the trigger at point-blank range.
BANG!
The heavy round shattered the creature’s skull mid-fall, sending its body sliding harmlessly across the slick floor behind them. In the exact same motion, Han Zheng reached out with his left hand, lightly catching the edge of Lin Qing’s jacket to pull her half a step back as a spray of acidic burrower blood splashed harmlessly onto the stone where she had been standing a second prior.
Their movements were fully synchronized. Where Han Zheng applied sweeping, heavy kinetic crowd control to crush the main force of the horde, Lin Qing provided surgical, high-precision marksmanship to pick off fast-moving flankers that slipped through the pressure waves. Lieutenant Chen provided thermal bursts to seal the cracked masonry overhead, while Sun Hao tracked the remaining subterranean signatures on his handheld radar.
The depot guards behind the barricade stood frozen in absolute awe. Guo Jiong and Song Yan held their weapons raised, but they barely had an opportunity to pull their triggers. Han Zheng’s elite unit—with Lin Qing operating seamlessly at its core—handled the breach with a brutal, terrifying efficiency that left no room for error.
Within four minutes, the screeching from the lower tunnel faded into a low, dying gurgle.
The corridor was completely silent once more, save for the hum of the auxiliary lights, the heavy breathing of the squad, and the faint smell of cordite floating in the cold air. Dozens of dark, motionless forms lay scattered across the entrance of the access tunnel, completely neutralizing the threat before it could ever reach the inner sectors.
Xiao Li relaxed his posture, the stone armor rippling across his arms before softening back into his natural skin. Old Wang cleanly ejected a spent casing from his sniper rifle, letting it clink softly against the steel pipe before slinging his weapon across his back.
Han Zheng lowered his hand, his kinetic aura slowly dissipating into the surrounding air. He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes fixing onto Lin Qing, who stood right beside him.
Lin Qing smoothly ejected her depleted magazine, caught a fresh one from her vest with her off-hand, snapped it into the well, and racked the slide back into battery with a crisp, effortless click. She engaged the safety, her hands completely steady, not a single trace of tremor in her fingers.
She looked up, meeting Han Zheng’s gaze.
There were no dramatic words spoken, no sudden, miraculous recovery of her lost memories, and no emotional outbursts. But as they stood side by side amidst the smoke and dust of the cleared breach, the absolute, unspoken reality was unmistakable to everyone in the room.
Her mind might have forgotten the past, but her body, her instincts, and her loyalty to the man beside her had never left.
