Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 152: Glacial DeadThe high-pitched, frantic chirp from Lin Qing’s wrist gauntlet was followed immediately by visual confirmation through the swirling fog. Through the SUV’s high-frequency thermal scanner, she watched the twelve o’clock ridge explode into sudden, terrifying motion.
These were not wild animals, nor were they the slow, shambling, low-tier infected.
These were advanced zombies, the frost mutated ones.
A dozen of them launched themselves down the sheer cliff face, completely ignoring the danger of the vertical drop. Their hardened, claw-like hands dug effortlessly into the frozen granite and thick ice shelves, navigating the precipitous descent with unnatural, spider-like agility.
SCREEECH!
One of the lead zombies let out a high-pitched, metallic shriek that echoed off the frozen gorge walls, vibrating through the cold air. It hit the snow-covered track at full velocity, rolled once to absorb the crushing kinetic impact, and instantly surged forward, its glowing blue gaze locked onto the idling lead SUV.
"They’re quite fast," Lin Qing stated smoothly, her voice calm, clipped, and amplified through the internal unit comms. Technically, due to her memory loss, this was the first time she had ever set eyes on a human zombie —yet her body reacted with the sharp, unhesitating precision of someone who had put down hundreds.
She didn’t need a direct command to act. Working on pure instinct, she and Han Zheng stepped into a flawless defensive echelon formation. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, they anchored the frontline in the snow, placing their bodies as an impenetrable wall between the descending horde and the vulnerable, stalled convoy behind them.
BANG! BANG!
Lin Qing opened fire without hesitation, sending two precise, high-velocity rounds screaming toward the lead zombie. The 9mm armor-piercing bullets struck the creature’s frozen skull with a resonant, metallic CLANG—yet only one round managed to punch through the hardened bone plate.
The zombie staggered, its blue eyes flickering erratically under the impact, but it didn’t drop. Its forward momentum remained practically uninterrupted as its claws dragged through the snowpack.
Beside her, Han Zheng raised his rifle, channeling his internal power through the optic scope mechanism to amplify its focus. He pulled the trigger, unleashing a concentrated, invisible shockwave that slammed directly into the center of the approaching cluster. Three of the advanced infected were lifted off their feet, their bodies slamming backward into the deep snowdrifts with the crushing force of a vehicular collision.
"Aim low!" Han Zheng commanded, his voice deep, authoritative, and steady against the howling gale. "Their skull plates are hardened by the ice, but their knee joints are brittle!"
Lin Qing instantly shifted her point of aim. She had no conscious recollection of his command style, but her muscle memory and sharp mind processed the logic without a millisecond of delay. She tracked the nearest zombie, which was bounding rapidly toward her left flank. She squeezed the trigger three times in rapid succession, placing three heavy rounds directly into its left knee joint.
The frozen joint shattered into icy fragments under the impact. The creature collapsed onto the snowpack with a wet thud, shrieking in rage as it dragged its useless lower body forward using its elongated arms.
While Han Zheng and Lin Qing held the frontline with absolute, lethal discipline, the primary vulnerability remained at the rear of the formation.
The loud, metallic clanking of Xiao Li and Song Yan’s frantic repairs, combined with the massive, rising plume of scalding steam from the flatbed’s cracked radiator, proved to be an irresistible beacon for the advanced infected.
Two of the advanced zombies bypassed the frontline engagement entirely. Scaling the vertical rock wall, they bounded along the narrow ledge before leaping down toward the rear of the convoy.
"Crap! Here they come!" Song Yan swore loudly, hearing the screech of the approaching dead over the roar of the blizzard. He was leaning deep over the flatbed’s hot engine bay, desperately holding a loose metal seal in place while Xiao Li smeared thick layers of grey thermal putty across the cracked seam.
"Leader Song, keep that seal dead steady!" Xiao Li bellowed, his face covered in soot, grease, and melting snow. "If this putty shifts before it hardens, the whole block cracks permanently!"
Song Yan pulled his sidearm with his free hand, but his shooting angle was almost completely blocked. He couldn’t fire around the raised hood without risking hitting Xiao Li, and the zombies were closing the distance far too fast for a blind shot.
The two advanced zombies reached the rear of the flatbed, their glowing blue eyes fixated on the heat radiating from the engine bay. One leaped onto the tailgate, its frozen claws tearing through the sheet metal with a sickening screech as it prepared to lunge toward the open passenger cab.
The second creature sprinted around the flank, sniffing the air near the covered canvas where Guo Jiong’s daughter and several terrified children were huddled inside the trailing transport truck.
Inside the transport bed, Guo Jiong’s daughter clutched her woolen blanket, her face pale as she heard the wet, raspy breathing of the beast scraping against the thin canvas wall.
VROOOOOOM!
The deafening, high-pitched scream of a modified two-stroke engine suddenly tore through the howling blizzard, drowning out the shrieks of the infected.
From the right ridge, an all-terrain motorbike burst through a massive snowdrift at fifty miles an hour. Old Wang, his face completely concealed behind a heavy woolen faceguard, leaned low over the handlebars, driving the bike directly into the narrow gap between the flatbed truck and the approaching zombies.
He had purposely ditched his thermal goggles, relying on raw instinct as he closed the distance.
"Hey! Blue-eyes! Over here!" Old Wang yelled over the roar of his engine.
He snatched a low-yield magnesium flare from his chest rig with his left hand, struck the pull-cap against the handlebars, and slammed the sparking, blinding stick of white fire directly into the snowbank at the feet of the two zombies.
An intense, white-hot glare erupted in the dim light of the gorge, casting harsh, flickering shadows across the whiteout. The extreme heat radiation and sudden brilliance struck the cold-adapted, dark-seeking senses of the advanced infected like a physical blow.
SCREEECH!
Both creatures recoiled violently, hissing and clawing at their faces as the intense magnesium glare scorched their optics.
Old Wang didn’t waste a second. He whipped the motorbike around in a tight, expert power-slide, spinning the rear tire and throwing up a massive roost of ice, slush, and hot exhaust directly into the lead zombie’s face.
The combination of loud engine noise, thermal exhaust, and the blinding magnesium flare proved far too enticing for their simple, predatory instincts to ignore.
Old Wang gunned the throttle, sending the bike surging forward down a narrow side ravine path that branched off the main pass—away from the stalled convoy, away from the vulnerable civilians, and deeper into the mountain.
The two advanced zombies, enraged and fixated entirely on the loud noise and burning heat trailing behind the bike, turned as one and lunged after him, their jerky, fast-moving forms disappearing into the mountains in hot pursuit.
"Convoy control, this is Scout 1," Old Wang’s crackling voice came through the headset in the lead SUV. "Rear flank is clear! I’m taking these two on a scenic tour through the lower gorge! Finish those repairs and get Wave One moving!"
Han Zheng lowered his rifle, watching the whiteout swallow the sound of the retreating engine. He knew that the short window provided by the flare was all they had left before more infected were drawn to the area. He tapped his comms unit to check the convoy’s status, ensuring Xiao Li and Song Yan were already tightening down the engine hood.
"Xiao Li, status report!" Han Zheng called out over the radio, his eyes sweeping the high ridge for any secondary waves of infected.
"Radiator seal is holding, Commander!" Xiao Li responded, his breath heavy and ragged over the channel. "Engine block temperature is stabilizing. We’re ready to roll!"
"Copy that. All vehicles, double your interval and move out!" Han Zheng ordered.
He turned to look at Lin Qing, who was smoothly swapping out her sidearm magazine, her dark eyes sharp, focused, and thoughtful as she scanned the treeline one last time. "Old Wang knows these ridges quite well now. He’ll loop back to Sector 1 once he loses them in the lower pass."
He reached out, his gloved hand gently brushing a light dusting of snow off her dark coat collar, his thumb lingering for a fraction of a second against her jawline. "Good eye on that flank."
Lin Qing looked up into his dark, unwavering eyes, feeling that familiar, steady warmth pressing against her chest once more. She didn’t have her structural memories back, but standing beside him in the cold mountain pass, her body felt completely at peace, operating on pure, unshakeable trust.
"Let’s get this convoy down the mountain," she said, tapping her freshly loaded magazine firmly into the well and stepping back into the lead SUV.
