Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 155: Silent Bonds & Cold QuartersThe heavy doors of the main loading bay hissed tightly shut behind them, cutting off the deafening, metallic thrum of idling diesel engines and the bitter, cold drafts sweeping in from the mountain pass. The temperature in the inner access corridor rose immediately, humming with the steady, quiet rhythm of the research centre’s geothermal heating and air-filtration systems.
Dr. Zhou led the small group down the wide, pristine concrete hallway, her digital clipboard tucked securely beneath her arm. Walking right beside Lin Qing was Han Ye, his tiny hand still lightly holding the thick fabric at the hem of her coat.
A few paces behind them came Gu An, holding Su Xiao’s small hand tightly in her own.
Until this moment, the two younger girls had remained completely quiet, visibly intimidated by the high-stress chaos of the convoy’s arrival and the rigid, intimidating atmosphere of the lower loading bay. But as the noise faded, Gu An finally found her courage to speak.
Gu An was a sharp, remarkably observant young girl. Her eyes had been fixed on Lin Qing ever since they stepped out of the vehicle, and it hadn’t taken her long to spot the subtle, immaculate white medical bandages wrapped neatly beneath the high collar of Lin Qing’s coat, extending upward toward the base of her hairline where her head had taken the impact of the fall.
"Sister Lin..." Gu An spoke up softly, her timid voice carrying a delicate, hesitant tremble against the quiet corridor walls.
Lin Qing paused her stride, turning her head with fluid grace to look back at the young girl. Gu An took a small, cautious step forward, her fingers tightening slightly around Su Xiao’s small hand for support.
"Are you... are you alright?" Gu An asked, her small face filled with genuine, deep concern as she gestured timidly toward her own forehead. "Your head... I saw the bandages when you got out of the car. Does it still hurt a lot?"
Lin Qing looked down at the young girl. Even without her memories to tell her who Gu An was, her posture relaxed completely. She offered a small, reassuring smile, her voice smooth, low, and calm. "I’m alright. It’s healing very well, so you don’t need to worry about me."
Gu An searched Lin Qing’s face, her eyes looking deep into hers. Though Lin Qing’s tone was the same as normal, Gu An’s sharp intuition caught the subtle, unfamiliar distance in her gaze—the clear, subtle sign that "Sister Lin" was looking at her like a polite stranger rather than the familiar figure who had taken care of her in the past.
A sudden, heavy sting of sadness settled into Gu An’s chest. Her small shoulders drooped slightly, her chin dipping as she swallowed her quiet disappointment.
Noticing the little girl’s sudden drop in spirit, Lin Qing’s stoicism melted completely. She reached out with a gentle movement. Her hand came down to rest softly on Gu An’s head, gently patting her dark hair with a comforting motion that transcended lost memories.
Gu An blinked, her head snapping back up as the sadness in her eyes instantly dissolved, replaced by a bright, cozy warmth that flooded her entire face with relief.
Beside her, Su Xiao looked up with wide, curious eyes, watching Gu An get comforted. Sensing the younger girl’s eager, envious gaze, Lin Qing let out a quiet chuckle. She shifted her hand over and gently patted Su Xiao’s soft, fluffy hair as well.
Su Xiao instantly beamed, letting out a tiny, delighted giggle that echoed sweetly down the sterile concrete corridor, breaking the lingering tension in the air.
Because of Gu An’s company and the soldiers’ quite warmth, Su Xiao had come out of her shell completely and fully adapted to the research center. She was more like a cheerful five year old child now than the silent and traumatized little girl she had been when she had arrived.
Han Ye, walking quietly on Lin Qing’s left side, observed the entire interaction without uttering a single word. His face remained calm, neat, and impassive, but internally, his mind was processing every subtle detail with cold efficiency.
’Her muscle memory and protective instincts toward the children are intact, even if her memories are locked away. That means her core nature hasn’t changed.’
Dr. Zhou glanced back over her shoulder, her eyes softening.
"Since we are approaching the central junction, there is an official security matter I must inform you about, Lin Qing," Dr. Zhou said, her voice dropping into a serious, lowered register. "Down on the lower level, beneath the primary research laboratories, we currently have three individuals under strict, heavy imprisonment."
Lin Qing’s dark eyes sharpened instantly, her focus shifting back into a heightened state of tactical awareness. "Who?"
"Your cousin, Lin Tao, along with two senior research staff members," Dr. Zhou explained crisply. "They are currently confined but I strongly advise you to be extremely cautious if you ever have reason to venture down to those lower research levels."
Lin Qing nodded slowly, storing the critical information away into her mental map of the base.
Lin Tao. Cousin. Traitor currently locked in deep containment. "Understood, Dr. Zhou. I’ll keep my guard up around the research sector."
The elevator doors hummed open, and the group stepped inside.
When the heavy doors parted, the atmosphere was strikingly different from the noisy loading bay below. The corridor here was pristine, silent, brightly lit with soft recessed lighting. Dr. Zhou led them down the hall, stopping before a door.
"This is your room. " Dr. Zhou said, stepping aside to hold the door open. "Your personal things are inside. I will leave you and the children to get settled while I head down to review the incoming medical supplies and trauma cases from Sector 4."
"Thank you, Dr. Zhou," Lin Qing replied smoothly. The researcher offered a brief, respectful nod before turning and walking back toward the lift.
Turning back toward the door of her room, Lin Qing stepped over the threshold, with Han Ye, Gu An, and Su Xiao following closely at her heels.
She paused, taking a slow, analytical sweep of the space.
The space was strictly functional and minimalist. A wardrobe sat against the far wall beside a small desk stacked with clean, blank field logs. Mounted directly beside the desk was a compact weapon rack housing standard-issue sidearm maintenance kits and a high-frequency blade sheath.
Her dark eyes drifted slowly toward the bed pushed against the far wall.
It was neatly made, with dark grey, thermal blankets pulled tight over a firm mattress. Sitting at the head of the bed was a single, neatly squared pillow.
Lin Qing stood quietly at the edge of the bed, her eyes locking onto that single pillow.
Her mind immediately began piecing the subtle details together. There was no second pillow tucked into the corner, no extra blanket folded on the trunk, and no trace of anyone else’s gear occupying the narrow floor space. The room was set up for one occupant.
A faint, contemplative glint flickered in her eyes. Individual rooms.
Even though Han Zheng was the commander and her legal husband, he didn’t share a bedroom with her.
"Sister Lin?"
Gu An’s soft voice broke through her quiet observation.
"This is your room," Gu An pointed out timidly, gesturing toward the wardrobe. "You used to keep your clothes in that cabinet. Uncle Han’s room is further down the hall."
Lin Qing turned around, the faint curve of a realization settling smoothly into her mind. "I see."
It made sense. In a world defined by sudden midnight alarms, high-stress deployments, and constant combat readiness, having separate, individual quarters allowed both of them to function at peak efficiency without disrupting each other’s sleep cycles or routines.
Han Ye stepped up to the doorframe, his small frame leaning lightly against the cold metal jamb. He looked around the simple room, his dark eyes landing on the single pillow before shifting up to meet Lin Qing’s gaze.
"Mother," Han Ye said softly, playing his role as an obedient child for the time being. "You should get some rest now. Your head needs time to heal. Gu An, Su Xiao, and I will stay right outside in the main hallway lounge so nobody comes in to disturb you."
Lin Qing looked down at the three children standing loyally near her doorway like little sentinels. Despite the cold, austere reality of the base and her lost memories, a deep sense of quiet security washed over her.
"Alright," Lin Qing said softly, a genuine smile gracing her lips as she reached out to give Han Ye’s neat dark hair a quick, gentle ruffle. "Thank you, Han Ye. Watch over the girls."
Han Ye offered a small, neat nod. "I will."
He turned with quiet authority, guiding Gu An and Su Xiao back out into the residential lounge area, gently pulling Lin Qing’s bedroom door shut so she could finally rest in complete, undisturbed peace.
