Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 179: The Intercepted TraceThe heavy rumble of diesel engines echoed continuously through the concrete cavern of the Research Center’s lower motor pool as Lieutenant Chen’s convoy rolled back through the blast doors.
Cold morning mist and fresh diesel exhaust mixed with the subterranean air as the supply trucks ground to a halt in the primary loading bay. The floorboards vibrated under the weight of the vehicles, signaling a successful return from the perimeter sweep.
Lieutenant Chen hopped down from the lead truck’s elevated cab, unbuckling his harness and wiping a smudge of black axle grease from his forehead with the back of his glove.
Under Song Yan’s loud, highly efficient direction from the loading dock, ground crews and guard squads immediately swarmed the back of the vehicles, starting the methodical, well-rehearsed process of offloading crates of non-perishable rations structural fasteners retrieved from the depot.
Across the sprawling bay, however, another detail team was quietly working on a completely separate task.
Lu Feng stood near the rear bumper of a vehicle—the transport truck that had brought Director Chen back in chains from the fallen facility. While Lieutenant Chen’s team handled the fresh supplies, Lu Feng’s detail was conducting a thorough, second-pass security sweep, mechanical check, and chemical clean-down of the armored transport to ensure no residual tracking tags, hidden passive beacons, or biological hazards had been brought into the base’s lower perimeter.
Inside the dark, rear troop compartment, a young guard was scrubbing down the steel floorboards with a stiff wire brush and industrial solvent. His scrub pad caught sharply against the jagged metal edge of the bench frame near the very back of the dark cab.
"Captain Lu Feng," the guard called out, pulling back his flash lamp and squinting into the narrow gap beneath the bench. "Got something stuck down in the bench frame seam back here. Looks like trash or debris."
Lu Feng leaned over the tailboard, his sharp eyes following the steady beam of white light. Deep inside the narrow, rusted gap where the steel floor plate met the bolted seating frame was a tiny, tightly folded rectangle of stiff paper, jammed in so hard that it was nearly wedged flush against the structural weld.
"Careful with it," Lu Feng instructed, stepping up into the truck bed with measured steps. He pulled a thin metal pry tool from his vest pocket, carefully angling the flat tip behind the paper until the wedged scrap popped free with a soft tear.
He unfolded the scrap carefully between his gloved fingers. It was roughly the size of a thumb, slightly crumpled along the edges, and bore neat, hand-written alphanumeric lines rendered in dark, waterproof ink:
SEC-R3 // 142.875 MHz
GRID: 34-DELTA-09
SIG-ENC: VER-7
Lu Feng stared at the precise numbers for a long moment before folding the scrap neatly back along its original creases. "Resume cleaning," he ordered crisply, looking down at the guard. "Finish the sanitization sweep, but don’t mention this piece of paper to the rest of the crew."
---
Five minutes later, Lu Feng pushed open the doors of the main Command Hub.
Han Zheng and Lin Qing were standing side by side over the central map console, reviewing the base’s morning power distribution logs, water filtration metrics, and perimeter guard rotations. The room was quiet, lit primarily by the cool blue light of the main tactical display monitors.
"Commander. Sister-in-law Lin," Lu Feng said, his boots clicking sharply against the polished floor as he approached the central desk.
Han Zheng looked up from the glowing monitor, setting down a stylus. "Lieutenant Chen’s depot run complete?"
"Fully offloaded, accounted for, and secured in the primary inventory vault," Lu Feng replied. He walked over to the desk and laid the small piece of folded paper directly between them. "But we found this during the sanitization sweep of the transport truck. The one we used to bring Director Chen in."
Lin Qing reached out and picked up the scrap, unfolding it carefully under the bright overhead light. Han Zheng leaned in close, his heavy brows furrowing as he read the crisp, handwritten grid coordinates and radio frequency.
"Where exactly was it located?" Han Zheng asked, his deep voice dropping an octave.
"Jammed deep into the rear floorboard seating frame right below where Director Chen was sitting during transit," Lu Feng explained, pointing to the edge of the paper. "He had his hands tied behind his back, but he was left alone in the rear compartment. He must have had this scrap before his capture, managed to slide it out with his fingertips, and kicked or shoved it down into the seat frame before we pulled him out at the lower unloading bay."
Lin Qing examined the ink density under the bright LED desk lamp, her eyes taking in every detail of the strokes. "Handwritten. Quick, precise strokes."
"I guess He thought he could ditch it before the full strip-search," Lu Feng added, leaning against the edge of the console. "If he couldn’t use it himself while in custody, he made sure we wouldn’t find it on his person during processing. He probably hoped one of the recovery teams would sweep or salvage the transport vehicle later."
Han Zheng stared intently at the middle line reading ’142.875 MHz’. "Lin Qing, run those grid coordinates and that specific frequency band against our regional mapping database right now."
Lin Qing’s fingers moved across the terminal keys with effortless speed. The map above the desk shifted instantly, zooming out from the Research Center’s perimeter fence, skipping past the ruined residential districts, and locking onto a remote, hilly industrial sector eight kilometers north-northeast of their position.
A red crosshair pinged softly over an abandoned municipal water treatment plant nestled at the rocky base of a ridge.
"Grid 34-Delta-09," Lin Qing read off the display screen, her voice calm and analytical. "The frequency—142.875 MHz—is an encrypted secondary military band. It’s an automated relay channel. Low-power, narrow-beam, frequency-hopping transmission."
"A secondary repeater tower," Han Zheng muttered, leaning his hands flat against the console frame. "Not a regional command hub, but an automated signal bridge."
"It makes sense," Lu Feng said, studying the topography on the map. "That facility was Director Chen’s primary operational base, but an organization that big wouldn’t rely on a single landline or direct long-range broadcast to transmit data back to their central headquarters. If any went dark, this secondary repeater station was likely designed to store and forward encrypted telemetry automatically."
Lin Qing looked up, her expression cold and calculating. "Director Chen didn’t want us finding this because as long as we don’t know the repeater exists, the Network central hub probably doesn’t know that facility has fallen. The repeater is likely set on a strict timer pulse. Every twelve or twenty-four hours, it sends a brief ping to the central hub to confirm that it is still operational and online."
"And if that automated pulse stops without warning, The network will immediately realize Block C was compromised," Han Zheng finished her thought, his eyes narrowing.
A quiet, heavy stillness settled over the Command Hub as all three of them contemplated the implications.
"We got lucky," Lu Feng admitted quietly, crossing his arms. "If the cleaning crew hadn’t pulled up that seat lining to scrub the frame, we would have missed the window entirely."
Han Zheng stood tall, his gaze fixed on the flashing red crosshair hovering over the water treatment plant on the holographic display. "We don’t know how much time is remaining on the repeater’s current pulse cycle. Director Chen stays locked under total communications blackout."
He turned to Lu Feng and Lin Qing, his tone dropping into crisp, authoritative operational command.
"Lu Feng, quietly assemble a four-man reconnaissance element. Light gear, long-range optics, silence-equipped sidearms, zero heavy vehicles. We need a silent, non-intrusive look at Grid 34-Delta-09 before we make any physical move on that tower."
Lin Qing nodded, her eyes shifting back to the handwritten paper on the desk. "I’ll begin working on decrypting the signal structure for the ’VER-7’ encryption protocol so we can intercept and analyze the data stream the moment the recon team gets into broadcast range."
"Good," Han Zheng said, his tone grim as he looked back at the map. "Let’s find out what Director Chen was trying so hard to keep hidden in the dark."
---
Meanwhile, small footsteps padded quietly down the dim corridor outside the administrative offices.
Han Ye walked with his hands buried in his pockets, his posture completely relaxed and childishly unbothered. Through the subtle vibrations of the shadow network he had left anchored to the base’s lower transport frames, he had felt the moment the guard’s metal tool pulled the scrap of paper free from the truck’s rear seam.
He had felt Lu Feng take it, felt the crisp rustle of the paper being unfolded, and traced the path as Lu Feng carried the intelligence directly up to the Command Hub.
Han Ye paused by a window overlooking the motor pool below, where Lieutenant Chen’s men were stacking crates of fresh grain and canned rations. A faint, invisible flicker of shadow rippled around his heels before settling back beneath his shoes.
’Hook, line, and sinker,’ Han Ye thought, his young face unreadable in the morning light.
Director Chen would never realize how he had just been framed for leaving a critical security leak behind.
Han Zheng, Lin Qing, and Lu Feng now had an exact target and a clear operational timeline. The Research Center wouldn’t be caught flat-footed if the Network sent their secondary retrieval units; instead, Han Zheng’s recon team would be waiting in the shadows long before the next automated pulse broadcast went out.
Han Ye turned away from the window, walking quietly back toward the residential suite with a gentle, satisfied smile. He had set the board, fed the intelligence, and protected his cover. Now, he just had to let the adults execute the play.
