Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 182: The Hidden GarrisonThe cold dawn of the following morning brought no sun, only a dense blanket of gray fog that clung heavily to the ruined landscape. The melting slush had refrozen overnight into a treacherous glaze of black ice, making every step past the Research Center’s perimeter fence a deliberate, careful effort.
Han Zheng, Lin Qing, and Lu Feng moved in tight formation along the ridge trail leading toward the subterranean entry of Block C. Behind them, Old Wang kept point, his long-range rifle slung low across his back, his posture loose as he scanned the treeline for unexpected movement.
The primary objective for the day was Sector 4, but a lingering question remained. Block C had been taken days ago, its core leadership shattered, and Director Chen brought back in chains. Yet the secondary automated pings coming from Grid 34-DELTA-09 suggested that Block C was still broadcasting as an active asset. Someone was keeping the facility running just enough to fool the network’s automated sweeps.
They had expected Ye Lin to clear out immediately after erasing the mainframe logs. He had made his intentions clear during the initial collapse of the facility—his sole motivation was finding his mother, whom Director Chen had hidden away under Apex custody.
As the squad cleared the final bend in the ridge, the doors of Block C’s upper surface bunker came into view. The entry was partially cracked open, a faint plume of exhaust venting silently into the freezing morning air.
Old Wang raised a hand, halting the advance behind a cluster of jagged rock formations. "Movement at the gate," he said quietly. "Two guards. Standard gear, full body armor, rifles held low."
Han Zheng stepped out from behind the stone cover, making no attempt to hide his presence. Lin Qing walked beside him, her hand resting naturally near her sidearm holster.
The two guards at the doors instantly brought their weapons up, their boots sliding slightly on the icy concrete apron. But as Han Zheng drew closer, the lead guard froze, lowering his muzzle. He turned to his companion, tapped his shoulder, and gestured toward the shadow of the door frame.
"Hold your fire," a voice called out from the dark threshold.
A tall figure stepped out into the misty morning light. He wore a scuffed tactical vest over a dark grey fatigue jacket, his boots caked in dried mud. His posture was relaxed, yet it carried the distinct air of a trained special forces officer.
It was Ye Lin.
He looked at Han Zheng, then turned his gaze to Lin Qing, showing no surprise at their sudden arrival.
"Commander Han. Lin Qing," Ye Lin said smoothly, his voice low. "I didn’t expect to see you back at Block C so soon. I assumed you were busy integrating Director Chen into your cells."
"We thought you would be long gone by now," Lin Qing said, taking a step forward. "You said you were going after your mother."
Ye Lin let out a short, quiet breath, pulling a small pack of rations from his pocket and tossing it idly between his hands before sliding it back into his vest. "That was the plan. But pulling off a silent evacuation takes time, especially when you have to deal with a facility full of armed men who suddenly realize their commander isn’t coming back."
Lu Feng moved up beside Han Zheng, his eyes sweeping the surface bunker. "You kept the facility running. Why hasn’t Apex sent a recovery team?"
"Because as far as Apex central knows, Block C is operating under normal security protocols," Ye Lin explained, leaning back against the steel frame of the open door. "I stayed behind to handle the aftermath. My father ran this place through fear, control, and forced compliance. When he fell, the garrison didn’t just break into chaos—they split into three groups."
Han Zheng crossed his arms, listening closely. "Explain."
"The majority of the soldiers here were never fanatically loyal to Apex," Ye Lin said, his tone shifting into something more serious. "They were forced into this, fed up with being ordered to hunt down and abuse energy-awakened civilians just because my father deemed them threats or research subjects. The moment he was taken out, I offered them a deal. I opened the secondary armory, gave them their share of rations, and told them to walk away. Most of them took the deal and left for good. They’re scattered across the outer zones now, trying to find their families or start over."
"And the ones who were loyal to your father?" Lin Qing asked.
"The fanatical officers? The ones who would have immediately radioed Apex command to report a breach?" Ye Lin smirked faintly, pointing a thumb back into the dark interior of the bunker. "Locked in the lower holding cells. The exact same cells where my father used to throw his prisoners. They have water, basic rations, and zero access to the comms array. If I had let them go, they would have reported my betrayal, and Apex would have executed my mother before I even cleared the sector."
Han Zheng glanced at the two guards standing near the gate. "And these men?"
"The ones who had nowhere else to go," Ye Lin answered softly. "Soldiers who lost their homes, their families, or who simply trusted me over my father. They stayed behind to help me hold the perimeter, keep the surface quiet, and ensure the automated systems didn’t send an emergency distress pulse back to central command."
Lin Qing looked at Ye Lin with renewed evaluation. "You took a massive risk staying here. If Apex had sent a routine inspection team, you would have been caught in the middle."
"I had to cover the base’s fall," Ye Lin said simply. "If the network realized Block C fell three days ago, the entire regional sector would have gone into total lockdown. My mother’s location would have been moved to a deep black site."
Han Zheng stepped closer to the entrance. "We tapped the secondary repeater at Grid 34-DELTA-09. We know about the logistics convoy routing through Sector 4 in thirty-six hours."
Ye Lin raised an eyebrow, a slight look of genuine impression crossing his face. "You intercepted the VER-7 protocol? Impressive. That schedule was pushed out directly from Apex regional command last night. My father was supposed to acknowledge it personally."
"We intend to hit that convoy," Han Zheng stated directly. "They’re carrying heavy energy cells, medical precursors, and refined alloy. But Director Chen let it slip during interrogation that the escort detail includes Class-3 vanguard transports with dual-layer energy shields."
Ye Lin straightened up, his eyes sharpening as he considered the statement. "He wasn’t lying. A Class-3 detail is a moving fortress. The vanguard vehicles carry high-frequency shield arrays that can deflect heavy kinetic ordnance without taking structural damage. If you try to stop them with sheer force, they’ll simply roll right over your roadblock."
"Lin Qing has designed wide-spectrum electromagnetic dampening charges to strip the shields at the canyon bottleneck," Lu Feng added.
Ye Lin nodded slowly, processing the tactical layout. "That will work on the shields, but it won’t stop their secondary defense loop. Apex Class-3 escorts carry automated distress beacons integrated directly into their vehicle chassis. The moment those shields drop or a hull seal is breached, the vehicles automatically transmit an emergency distress ping to every Apex unit within fifty kilometers. You might take the convoy, but you’ll have a secondary strike team dropping on your head before you finish loading the crates."
Lin Qing took a step forward. "Can you override that distress loop?"
Ye Lin looked back inside the dark tunnel of Block C, then turned back to face them. A steady, resolute expression settled over his features.
"My men and I still have access to the secondary frequencies used by Block C’s escort command," Ye Lin said. "If I take my remaining squad and set up a mobile jamming array on the high ridge directly above your ambush point, we can flood the local band with garbage data. The moment you detonate your dampening charges, we block their distress pings from reaching the satellite bridge."
Han Zheng looked at Ye Lin carefully, weighing the offer. "Why help us hit an Apex convoy? You could take your men and leave right now."
"Because that convoy isn’t just carrying raw supplies," Ye Lin replied, his voice dropping into a firm, icy tone. "A Class-3 run of medical precursors and heavy energy cells only goes to high-priority research facilities. Taking down that supply line cripples the exact network holding my mother. Every asset Apex loses in this sector brings their regional grid closer to collapsing. Besides... you took down my father and freed the people here. I owe you for making this base’s fall possible."
Lin Qing looked at Han Zheng and gave a subtle, decisive nod.
"Alright," Han Zheng said, extending a hand toward Ye Lin. "We’ll take your squad on the ridge. We deploy to Sector 4 in less than twenty hours."
Ye Lin reached out and shook Han Zheng’s hand with a firm, solid grip. "My men will be ready. We’ll bring our portable signal jammers and long-range comms units."
