Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 192: Blood in the RubbleThe heavy, cold mist of Sector 4 hung thick over the canyon, clinging to the jagged granite boulders and shattered reinforced concrete of the Block C collapse zone.
What had once been a massive subterranean staging court and primary entrance gate was now nothing more than a colossal mountain scar—thousands of tons of pulverized rock, twisted rebar, and snow-draped rubble sealing the former bunker beneath a natural grave.
Two armored transports pulled to a halt near the edge of the lower tree line, their engine rumbles echoing softly off the quiet valley walls. The side doors slid open and Lu Feng stepped down onto the muddy slush, his rifle resting comfortably in his grip.
Behind him, Xiao Li jumped out, his shoulders squared as he scanned the surrounding pine woods, his skin already showing the subtle, dull gray sheen of his passive Earth Hardening.
Ye Lin descended last, his coat drawn tight against the biting wind, carrying a pair of heavy, lead-lined containment cases. Six guards followed in formation, carrying heavy mechanical picks, crowbars, and specialized bio-hazard pincers.
"Keep your eyes open and stay in overlapping fire pairs," Lu Feng ordered softly, his sharp voice cutting through the cold air. "The sound array flattened the purge team, but the thaw is drawing out stray infected from the lower quad. We harvest clean, we harvest fast, and we get back to the Research Center."
"Understood, Captain," the squad echoed in unison.
They moved up the sloping rubble heap, their boots crunching against the loose gravel and frozen slush. Scattered across the outer perimeter of the landslide lay dozens of crushed, frozen infected—monsters that had been caught on the fringes of the acoustic bait trap and pinned beneath falling rock during the final demolition.
Xiao Li knelt beside a half-buried mutant, using a heavy steel pry bar to lever a massive slab of concrete off the creature’s torso. "Got one here."
Ye Lin stepped forward, pulling a pair of reinforced alloy pincers from his belt. He reached into the shattered sternum of the fallen infected, gripping a dull red stone embedded within the calcified chest cavity. With a precise, twisting motion, he extracted the core. The stone pulsed with a low, faint crimson light before Ye Lin dropped it into the lead-lined containment case.
"Standard crimson," Ye Lin noted calmly, securing the latch. "Thermal signature is stable. The chill in the air is keeping the core output baseline."
For the next two hours, the sweep proceeded with methodical, practiced efficiency. The squad worked their way across the northern edge of the collapse, extracting dozens of red energy stones from the buried horde. The guards stacked the filled containment cases into the rear of the truck, their spirits high as the haul accumulated. Each crimson core represented days of stable, high-yield power for the Research Center’s defense grid, turrets, and hydroponic bays.
By early afternoon, they had reached the deep structural fissure near the mouth of what used to be the primary vehicle ramp. The rubble here was larger, composed of massive support pillars that had snapped under the weight of the high-yield charges.
"This is the last section," Lu Feng said, checking his wrist slate. "We have thirty-two standard crimson cores in the box. One more sweep along this crevice and we pack it in."
Ye Lin leaned over the dark fissure, shining a high-powered beam into the shadows below. "There are three more infected pinned under this main crossbeam. Xiao Li, give me a hand with this pillar."
Xiao Li stepped up to the edge of the crevice. He took a deep breath, and a thick, rock-hard layer of mineral stone armor rapidly coated his arms and torso, gleaming like dark granite under the gray sky. Gripping the bottom of the shattered support beam, Xiao Li let out a low grunt, his enhanced earth-armored muscles bulging as he heaved the multi-ton concrete pillar upward a few inches.
"Got it," Xiao Li grunted through set teeth. "Make it quick, Ye Lin."
Ye Lin reached down with his pincers, targeting the chest of the nearest pinned infected.
Before his pincers could make contact, the shadow inside the deep fissure suddenly shifted.
A horrifying, guttural roar—far deeper and more resonant than the screech of a standard mutant—erupted from the darkness beneath the beam.
"Look out!" Ye Lin barked, instantly activating his shadow-step. His body blurred into a dark, swift mist, shifting back three paces just as a massive, clawed hand lashed out from the gap.
The creature didn’t just crawl out; it shattered the surrounding concrete.
With a violent explosion of dust and rock, a towering, mutated infected tore itself free from the deep fissure. It stood over seven feet tall, its torso covered in thick, overlapping plates of dark, chitinous bone armor. But unlike every other infected they had encountered in Sector 4, the crystal embedded in the center of its chest did not glow red.
It burned with a bright, terrifying, blinding ’yellow’ light.
"Yellow core!" Lu Feng yelled, his eyes widening as he instantly recognized the higher-tier energy signature. "Form up! Heavy suppression!"
The yellow-stone zombie surged forward with speed that defied its massive size. The air around the creature vibrated violently as its chest crystal unleashed a visible energy field—a glowing yellow aura that rippled across its bone armor.
Xiao Li reacted instinctively. Stepping directly into the beast’s path, he fully activated his Stone Armor, his entire body encased in rock-hard mineral plates, and slammed his heavy combat shield forward to block the charge.
BOOM!
The collision sounded like a cannon shot. The creature’s point-blank reflection field detonated against Xiao Li’s shield. The sheer force of the deflected energy shockwave blasted outward, shattering the reinforced mineral armor along Xiao Li’s arms and sending him flying backward ten feet into the rubble.
"Xiao Li!" Lu Feng roared.
Without hesitation, Lu Feng charged into the breach. He drew his heavy broadsword and swung a heavy lateral strike aimed directly at the creature’s neck to draw its aggro away from the downed vanguard.
The beast turned with unnatural reflexes. Its glowing yellow chest core flared bright, and its clawed right arm swept outward in a blinding arc.
Lu Feng raised his shield to absorb the blow, but the yellow core’s dense energy output overwhelmed the shield’s internal shock-absorbers instantly. The alloy frame buckled under the kinetic reflection spike, snapping the mechanical dampeners.
The creature’s massive, bone-armored claws sheared straight through the outer rim of the shield, tearing across Lu Feng’s tactical vest.
Deep, jagged gashes opened across Lu Feng’s forearm and upper ribs. The impact sent a heavy shockwave surging through his body, cracking two of his ribs and knocking him off his feet. Blood sprayed across the white snow as Lu Feng crashed heavily onto the hard rock face, his breath catching in a choked gasp.
"Captain!" Guo Jian screamed, leveling his rifle and dumping a full burst of armor-piercing rounds toward the beast’s head.
The bullets struck the glowing yellow field surrounding the creature, slowing down violently as their energy was absorbed and scattered by the core’s defense layer.
"Don’t attack the front!" Ye Lin’s voice echoed with from the shadows.
Using the distraction created by Lu Feng’s sacrifice, Ye Lin shadow-stepped directly behind the towering mutant. Appearing out of thin air on top of a fallen crossbeam, Ye Lin pinpointed the narrow gap in the creature’s bone armor behind its neck where the yellow energy field flickered to maintain front-line absorption.
Ye Lin drove his dagger downward into the base of the beast’s skull, twisting the blade to sever the nervous spinal column.
Simultaneously, Xiao Li, pushing past the pain of his shattered armor, lunged forward from the ground and fired a point-blank round directly into the structural crack Ye Lin had opened.
THWACK!
The double-impact shattered the back of the beast’s neck. The brilliant yellow light in its chest flickered violently, pulsed once with an unstable, high-frequency hum, and then extinguished. The massive, bone-armored creature collapsed forward onto the rubble, dead.
Silence fell over the fissure, broken only by the heavy panting of the squad and the soft crunch of boots in the snow.
Ye Lin dropped to his knees beside Lu Feng, instantly applying heavy pressure to the captain’s bleeding torso with a field dressing. "Hold still, Captain. Don’t move."
"I’m fine..." Lu Feng grunted through set teeth, his face pale, sweat breaking out on his forehead as he clutched his side. "The shield took... took the worst of the impact. Get... get that core."
Xiao Li stepped up, his stone armor flaking away to reveal bruised, bloodied arms. He brought down a mechanical chisel, carefully carving out the bright yellow energy stone from the dead beast’s sternum. The stone was slightly larger than a standard crimson core, cold to the touch, and radiating a dense, concentrated power signature that vibrated faintly through his hands.
"It’s secured," Xiao Li said, holding up the yellow stone before dropping it into a specialized container. "The energy density on this thing is off the charts. It’s easily five times stronger than the reds."
"We’re done here," Ye Lin commanded, lifting Lu Feng’s shoulder while Guo Jian grabbed his other side. "Load the captain into the primary transport! We move back to the Research Center immediately!"
The squad retreated swiftly down the rubble heap, locking the harvest boxes into the armored vehicle. The diesel engine roared to life, its tires kicking up slush as the transport tore away from the silent ruins of Block C, speeding down the mountain road toward the base.
---
Forty-five minutes later, the heavy outer blast gates of the Research Center slammed open, allowing the emergency transport to roll into the staging bay.
The moment the vehicle’s rear doors opened, Lin Qing was already there, flanked by Zhou Ming.
"Clear the ramp!" Lin Qing ordered, her voice sharp, composed, and commanding. She immediately took in Lu Feng’s pale complexion, the heavy blood soak on his field dressing, and his shallow breathing. "Torn lacerations across the chest and right forearm, probable internal kinetic shock and rib fractures. Get him onto the gurney! Transport directly to main medical hall!"
Han Zheng stepped into the leading bay along with Dr. Zhou, his eyes fixing on the bloodstains on the floor before moving to Ye Lin. "What happened?"
Ye Lin handed the heavy steel container directly to Dr. Zhou. "We harvested thirty-two standard crimson cores without issue. But a high-tier yellow-stone variant was buried deep in the lower fissure. It possessed kinetic reflection and enhanced bone armor. Captain Lu Feng drew its primary strike to keep the squad from taking a direct hit."
Dr. Zhou carefully opened the container, her eyes widening behind her glasses as the soft yellow light illuminated her face. "A yellow core... The energy stabilization metrics on a stone of this tier could completely revolutionize our rail turret outputs."
"Analyze it immediately," Han Zheng instructed Dr. Zhou, before turning his gaze toward the medical corridor where Lin Qing was already directing the emergency surgery detail. "And make sure Lu Feng gets top priority medical care."
Inside the medical hall, the bright surgical lights reflected off stainless steel trays as Lin Qing moved with flawless, instinctive precision.
She stripped away the torn tactical gear, her gloved hands applying advanced energy-dampening salves to seal the micro-tears in Lu Feng’s muscle tissue while Zhou Ming prepared the suture lines.
Her martial and field medic expertise from her past life took over completely—stitching the deep lacerations, setting the fractured ribs with precision braces, and stabilizing his vitals before any secondary infection could take root.
Within two hours, the red warning lights outside the medical suite shifted back to green.
Lin Qing stepped out into the clean corridor, pulling off her surgical gloves. Han Zheng was waiting outside, leaning against the wall with his arms folded across his chest.
"He’s stable," Lin Qing reported, offering a tired but satisfied smile. "The shockwave bruised his internal organs, but the chest gashes missed his main arteries. He’ll need a week of bed rest, but he will make a full recovery."
Han Zheng let out a low, quiet breath, looking at her with deep approval. "Good work."
He stepped beside her as they walked down the quiet hallway toward the central command hub. "Dr. Zhou is already running containment tests on the yellow core. With thirty-two red stones and one yellow in our reserve, our base’s power grid is officially secured for the foreseeable future."
Lin Qing nodded, looking out through the corridor viewport toward the fortified mountain peaks surrounding their home. The scavenge run had cost them blood, but the prize they brought back had cemented the Research Center’s standing as an unbreachable fortress in the cold, evolving wasteland.
