Beyond the heavy door of the residential suite, the subterranean hallway echoed with a chaotic, terrifying storm of heavy gunfire, shouting, and the wet, guttural screeching of mutated crawlers.

The floorboards beneath the thick carpet shuddered continuously with every burst of Ah Hua’s heavy belt-fed machine gun, keeping the primary wave of mutated infected pinned down the narrow corridor. The violent thuds of bodies hitting the concrete walls and the acrid smell of gunpowder and ozone seeped through the tiny gaps in the doorframe, filling the living space with the unmistakable, rot and copper-heavy stench of close-quarters combat.

Inside the living lounge, illuminated by the faint, pulsing red glow of the secondary emergency strobes, the atmosphere was thick with a tense, suffocating quiet.

Near the polished side table, Gu An gripped her wrists tightly behind her back, her knuckles turning bone-white under the harsh strobes. Five-Su Xiao stood beside her, her lower lip trembling slightly as she nervously wrung her hands against the hem of her sweater, her chest rising and falling in quick, shallow breaths. Beside them, Xiao Mei stood motionless, her pale face tight with concentration, tiny wisps of faint silver mist escaping her lips every time she exhaled into the air.

They were terrified—their young hearts thumping wildly against their ribs as the sounds of violent slaughter raged just inches beyond the doorway—but none of them broke formation or took a single step backward. They had practiced their roles during the quiet hours of base duty, but applying those lessons while blood splattered the hallway outside was an entirely different trial.

In front of them stood Han Ye.

His posture was unnaturally steady, his stance upright and relaxed, his dark eyes fixed unblinkingly on the far concrete wall of the room.

He didn’t look like a frightened child trapped in a siege; he looked like a seasoned commander waiting for a predictable, amateurish move from an opponent he had already calculated through and through.

In his past life, he had faced terrifying abyssal horrors and scheming warlords; a feverish, unhinged traitor like Lu Ning was merely a minor anomaly to be dealt with efficiently. His shadows had long sensed her.

Suddenly, the ambient temperature in the room dropped sharply. The wall at the back of the lounge began to ripple, the solid stone blurring like a liquid distortion under an intense heat wave.

A hand emerged first—pale, sweat-slicked, and trembling violently. Then a forearm, followed by a shivering, ragged body stepping straight through the multi-layered stone wall as if passing through thin water.

Lu Ning stumbled into the room, her shoes hitting the carpeted floor with a heavy, uneven thud. Her clothes were dirty and stained from the holding room floor, her long hair hanging in greasy, matted strands around her hollow, gaunt face. Her skin burned with the flushed, blotchy heat of her intense awakening fever, her bloodshot eyes darting wildly around the dimly lit room in a frantic search for easy targets to destroy.

A cruel, psychotic smile stretched across her pale face as she straightened up, her breath coming in ragged, feverish gasps that rattled deep in her chest.

"Cowering in the dark..." Lu Ning rasped, her voice dry, raspy, and dripping with toxic malice. "Where’s your precious commander now? Where’s Lin Qing? They left you here to die in the cold while the monsters tear this base apart—"

She stopped abruptly, the rest of her bitter taunt choking in her throat.

Her delusional expectations of finding crying, helpless children cowering under blankets or hiding behind sofas evaporated instantly. Instead, she was met with four pairs of sharp, focused eyes staring straight back at her without a single trace of panic.

Han Ye stood at the center of the lounge, his face devoid of fear, his dark eyes cold and assessing. Behind him, though Gu An’s shoulders were tense and Su Xiao was biting her lip in nervous anticipation, all three girls were lined up in a disciplined, overlapping tactical formation, watching her every twitch with calculated focus.

Lu Ning’s smugness faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of bewildered irritation crossing her flushed face. "What is this?" she hissed, her hands twitching into claws as her feverish rage surged back with violent intensity. "You little brats think you can look at me like that?! I’ll rip you apart before anyone comes down those stairs!"

With a sharp, spiteful screech, she lunged forward, her fingers clawing frantically toward Han Ye’s neck.

Han Ye didn’t flinch, nor did he step back. His voice cut through the heavy room air, low, quiet, and absolute.

"Gu An. Shield."

The ten-year-old girl swallowed her fear instantly. Stepping firmly in front of the group, Gu An thrust her palms forward, channeling her energy with absolute resolve.

CLANG!

A brilliant, translucent forcefield materialized out of thin air, snapping into place two feet in front of Lu Ning with the solid impact of a physical wall. Lu Ning slammed full-force into the hardened energy barrier, her forehead crashing against the glowing surface with a dull thud that rattled her teeth and sent her staggering back. The shockwave bounced her backward, leaving her gasping for air as the blue shield hummed with solid, impenetrable density.

"You... you little monster!" Lu Ning snarled, her eyes widening in manic fury as she pressed her trembling hands against the barrier. She lifted her right hand, desperately trying to channel her physical phasing power to slide her body around the energy barrier’s atomic structure.

"Su Xiao," Han Ye instructed calmly, his eyes tracking the faint spatial ripple fluctuating around Lu Ning’s wrist. "Clamp her joints."

Su Xiao took a deep breath, squeezing her eyes half-shut to focus through her lingering nervousness. She extended her small hands toward Lu Ning and clenched her fingers into tight, firm fists.

An invisible telekinetic force slammed into Lu Ning like heavy iron clamps. Her arms were violently yanked backward, pinning her shoulders, wrists, and neck against the back wall. Her body was suspended three inches off the floor, her breath catching in her throat as Su Xiao’s mental weight clamped down on her limbs with crushing, inescapable precision.

"Let... let me go!" Lu Ning choked out, thrashing frantically against the invisible grip, her heels kicking uselessly at the air as she tried to break the telekinetic hold.

"Xiao Mei," Han Ye ordered next, his tone unflinching and steady. "Freeze her pivot."

Xiao Mei stepped forward, her pale face composed despite the beads of sweat on her temples. She curled her small fingers toward her palm, unleashing her ice attribute.

A visible ripple of silver frost surged across the floorboards, sweeping under Lu Ning’s suspended form like a rapid tide. Instantly, razor-sharp ice crystals expanded upward, encasing Lu Ning’s shoes, ankles, and knees in a thick, solid block of dense frost. The intense, localized cold penetrated her clothes instantly, sapping the burning strength of her fever and locking her lower body in an icy vise.

Lu Ning shivered violently, her teeth chattering uncontrollably as the dense frost locked her joints in place. "Brother... Lu Feng... save me..." she whimpered, her unhinged spite crumbling into frantic, desperate terror as she realized she couldn’t move a single muscle.

Desperation driving her to the absolute brink, Lu Ning closed her eyes, trying to force her entire body into a high-frequency spatial state to phase through the stone wall behind her and disappear into the facility’s framework.

Han Ye stepped forward, his boots clicking quietly against the frost-covered floorboards.

"Not today," he said softly.

He raised his right hand, extending his palm calmly toward her trapped form.

From the deep shadows beneath the coffee table and the dark corners of the lounge, four thick, ink-black shadow tendrils erupted from the floor. They snaked upward with unnatural speed and fluid agility, wrapping tightly around Lu Ning’s torso, arms, and throat.

The dark shadow energy didn’t just bind her physical skin—it sank deep into her energy aura, directly disrupting her spatial frequency. The moment the shadow tendrils locked onto her, the shimmering distortion around her body collapsed into nothingness. Her phasing ability was neutralized, locked down by the ancient, oppressive weight of Han Ye’s shadow manipulation.

Lu Ning hung completely paralyzed against the concrete wall—shielded by Gu An’s blue barrier, pinned by Su Xiao’s telekinesis, frozen by Xiao Mei’s frost, and anchored by Han Ye’s shadows. Her eyes rolled back in feverish exhaustion, her limbs completely limp as her grand plan of spiteful revenge collapsed into total humiliation.

Han Ye slowly lowered his hand, his dark eyes staring quietly at the helpless, shivering woman trapped before them.

Behind him, Gu An, Su Xiao, and Xiao Mei let out long, collective breaths, their nervous tension melting away into quiet relief as they realized their combination had worked with complete, flawless precision. Su Xiao wiped a tiny line of sweat from her forehead, glancing at Han Ye with a subtle look of pride, while Gu An lowered her hands, letting the forcefield fade into ambient light.
