Chapter 296: Chapter 296: Background

Then there was Chad Yates, who had initiated an investigation into corruption within the base. Dozens of people were subsequently dismissed, and all of them were individuals planted by the various families.

And today, Chad Yates hadn’t come to the regular meeting. Who was orchestrating all of this?

Elder Shaw? Or the White Family?

They leaned more toward the White Family. Elder Shaw didn’t have enough power to touch the people they’d planted.

As for why the White Family would do this, the leaders could only come to one conclusion...their ambition had swelled, and they craved more power and status.

Brian Booker scoffed lightly, "It’s not the White Family."

Steven Gibbs and Lena Corbin looked at her and said in unison, "Why?"

They were convinced it was the White Family. Only the White Family had the power to replace most of the base’s management in a matter of days.

Furthermore, after the dismissals, the positions were filled immediately instead of being left vacant.

Who else but the Mysterious Clan had that kind of backing?

Brian Booker internally rolled her eyes again. ’Even if you’re looking for puppets, you should at least find some smart ones. Look at Chad Yates, and now look at Lena Corbin and Steven Gibbs.’

’What a bunch of idiots!’

She explained again, exasperated, "Have you investigated the backgrounds of the new appointees?"

Lena Corbin shook her head. "We haven’t had time."

It had all happened in just two or three days; the situation had changed too quickly.

Steven Gibbs also shook his head in bewilderment.

Brian Booker felt the urge to leave. ’Why am I wasting my breath explaining so much to these two idiots? It’s completely useless!’

"I investigated their backgrounds. They don’t belong to the White Family, or even any of the other mysterious families."

"What?" the two said in unison again. Though they were fools, they weren’t completely brainless. After so much prodding, they finally started to understand.

Lena Corbin hesitated. "Are you saying... it was Elder Shaw?"

Brian Booker nodded gravely. ’They finally get it. Thank God!’

"If that’s the case, what should we do?" Lena Corbin frowned. "We can’t move against Elder Shaw for now. For all these years, not even the Mysterious Clan has been able to infiltrate his army."

Elder Shaw’s army wasn’t large—only five thousand strong—but two thousand of them were superpower users. Of those two thousand, five hundred were High-level Superpower Users.

The other three thousand were ordinary people without superpowers, but each one could fight like ten men. Every single one of them fought on the front lines, wiping out zombies.

At the mention of Elder Shaw’s army, all three fell silent.

However...the army wasn’t inside the base. They were spread out on missions year-round, but Elder Shaw himself was always protected by bodyguards.

The three of them made eye contact, and they all thought of the same thing—a piece of information that had come from the Mysterious Clan.

Meanwhile, as the three leaders were deep in discussion, dinner was already underway inside the RV.

Tonight’s menu was barbecue and hot pot.

Whether it was a grill for barbecue or a pot for hot pot, they had it all, stacked away in the kitchen cabinets, ready to be brought out at a moment’s notice.

As soon as Lily Hart finished her stinky tofu, she was already craving barbecue. She immediately sent a message to Roman Rowe, who rushed over to marinate the meat and prepare the ingredients. Seth, who hadn’t left yet, helped out.

Since the ingredients for barbecue and hot pot were mostly interchangeable, the two of them nearly covered the entire kitchen counter.

The meat and vegetables were arranged neatly in bowls, which were then set out one by one on the countertop, creating a spectacular sight. Lily Hart kept peeking in from the doorway to take a look.

The sight of the two from behind was a pleasant one, and the ingredients on the counter were enough to make anyone’s mouth water. She picked up her Light Brain and snapped a photo.

By six-thirty in the evening, the ingredients were mostly prepared, and everyone had gradually arrived. Outside, the area was still bustling with customers.

Cheers erupted from time to time. Lily Hart knew it meant someone had won a good prize, but she had grown a bit numb to it all. Nothing short of another tank or a helicopter would get her attention.

But right now, her attention was entirely on the grill, on a thick-cut slice of beef belly that was spitting oil with a SIZZLE. She stared at it intently, and finally, it was cooked through.

She took the first slice, sprinkled it with a few spices, and popped it right into her mouth. So fragrant! The meat was so tender she didn’t even need to wrap it in a lettuce leaf.

After eating a few more slices in a row, she occasionally wrapped one in lettuce to cut the richness. In the center of the grill were neatly arranged slices of meat, and around the edge was a ring of shiitake or button mushrooms.

On the other grill, there were shrimp in the middle and some vegetables around the edge.

When barbecue and hot pot are served together, things usually get hectic. You have to watch the meat to make sure it doesn’t overcook, and snatch it off the grill as soon as it’s done.

They even set aside a plate just for cooked meat, for anyone to grab from. At the same time, you had to keep an eye on the hot pot, since some ingredients would be ruined if they were boiled for too long.

It kept the adults incredibly busy. The children were typically just responsible for eating, and Lily Hart was happily part of that group.

In front of her were three plates: one for bones and other food scraps, one for boiled ingredients from the hot pot, and one for grilled ingredients.

Behind those three plates were several small saucers with dipping sauces, like a dry spice mix with cumin for the meat, and a sesame paste sauce for the hot pot ingredients...

Everyone had at least three bowls in front of them to start. It was a good thing the table was so large, or it never would have held everything.

As for Lily Hart, her two food plates were never empty. Someone was always adding more food, having perfectly grasped her tastes.

Everyone ate until they were completely stuffed.

But the kids had deliberately saved some room. They planned to hit the night market for snacks—junk food always has a special allure.

The night market was packed. Stall owners had set up their booths all along the wall of the shelter, and every stall was crowded. The whole place was bustling and lively.

But everyone was very orderly, forming lines, paying, and moving on.

Since it wasn’t raining, people could just find a corner, squat down, and start eating. There were some tables and chairs under the shelter, but they were limited and you had to fight for them.

The kids squeezed through the crowd, holding hands.

Easton caught the scent of stinky tofu, and his mouth started to water. He’d listened to Diana Sharp go on all afternoon about how delicious it was. He had to try it!

He said to the younger kids, "Find a place to wait for me. I’m going to buy a few orders."

Diana Sharp held up two fingers. "Just get two. We can share. I still want room for tanghulu and takoyaki."

"Fine, fine," Easton agreed. He let go of Frederick Shaw’s hand and turned, marching resolutely toward the stinky tofu stall.

Diana Sharp led the others to find a spot. Of course, they didn’t find one...

So they found a pillar nearby to wait at, since it was a conspicuous spot. Diana Sharp said to them, "You guys be good and wait for me here. I’m going to buy some other tasty things."

Tina Jacobs nodded, taking her place to look after the younger kids.

Not long after Diana Sharp left, a group of people suddenly appeared from all directions. Tina Jacobs held the younger kids’ hands tightly and tried to move out of the way, but this group seemed to be doing it on purpose, relentlessly pushing toward them.

It was as if they were determined to push right through the middle of them. Tina Jacobs was squeezed so hard she had no choice but to let go of their hands, shouting, "Don’t wander off!"

They weren’t far from the hotel and the bathhouse, and everyone knew the way, so Tina Jacobs wasn’t worried.

By the time the crowd passed, Tina Jacobs had been pushed a good distance away. The children were short to begin with, and being squeezed between a group of adults made it hard for them to breathe.
