Chapter 300: Chapter 300: Rescue
Frost Shaw said in a low voice, "Stand back a little."
Then, he reached out and placed his hand on the side of the iron hut. As he used his superpower, pristine white ice gradually spread across the wall.
Soon, that entire side was frozen solid. Once it was ice, it was his home turf.
He encased his fist in ice and slammed it against the hut’s wall a few times, and a sharp CRACK-CRACK-CRACK rang out.
After a few punches, the ice wall shattered, and with a WHOOSH, a large volume of water surged toward him.
It was water that had accumulated inside the iron hut. A figure also lunged toward Frost Shaw, and he quickly caught them in an embrace.
It was the unconscious Julius Carter.
He first laid the boy gently on the ground, then followed the secret passage to the next iron hut.
Meanwhile, as Frost Shaw was breaking down the wall, Roman Rowe had gone to find Elder Shaw. The group quickly relocated.
"Julius Carter is unconscious. He probably swallowed too much water. Does anyone know first aid?" Lily Hart asked.
Someone from the group stepped forward. Following Lily Hart’s directions, they jumped down the dry well, followed the secret passage to find Julius Carter, and began performing first aid.
The situation was urgent. They didn’t have time to move him up before providing aid, so they had to do it on the spot.
After spitting out a few mouthfuls of water, Julius Carter woke up. The rescuer carefully helped him back up.
Seeing this, Roman Rowe quickly grabbed a blanket and wrapped the boy in it. The weather was a bit cold, and they couldn’t risk him catching a chill.
Two minutes later, Frederick Shaw was rescued. A minute after that, Stewart Carter was rescued.
Everyone gathered around, wrapping the three little ones tightly in blankets.
But as Lily Hart was wrapping the blanket around Frederick Shaw, she felt something strange on his stomach. She lifted his shirt to look.
Another time bomb. The BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP sound echoed in everyone’s mind like a demonic chant.
Startled, Roman Rowe quickly lifted the blankets and clothes of Stewart Carter and Julius Carter.
Sure enough, a time bomb was strapped to the back of Stewart Carter’s calf, and another was tied to Julius Carter’s lower back.
The countdown had started the moment they left the iron huts, or perhaps it only started beeping after Lily Hart lifted the shirt.
’The timing was so precise, it was hard not to suspect the person had eyes in the sky... watching their every move.’
Frost Shaw tried his old trick again, attempting to freeze the bomb with his ice, but it was no use. The countdown timer continued its BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP, and it even seemed to get faster.
"I have bomb disposal experts here! Let them try," Elder Shaw said anxiously.
Someone from the team quickly came forward. Frost Shaw spread a blanket on the ground and laid the boys on it. The three were still unconscious, with droplets of water on their bodies. They shivered involuntarily as the cold wind blew over them.
Lily Hart’s heart ached at the sight. She took out another towel, knelt down, and started drying the water droplets off them. Seeing this, Elder Shaw finally snapped out of it and joined her.
Five hundred people had surrounded the courtyard, sealing it off completely. Some survivors nearby saw what was happening but didn’t dare to approach, assuming some kind of mission was underway.
The BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP sound was a constant drone, like a maddening chant, as the countdown on the timer ticked away, second by second.
Only five minutes left...
The bomb disposal expert was still studying them, but they were completely clueless.
Just then, Elder Shaw received a message: [If you don’t want to see your grandson blown to bits, hand over your military authority and step down from your position as head of the house.]
He chose to ignore it. This was the worst possible time to compromise.
But he was also afraid they might detonate the bombs on impulse. Elder Shaw could only pin his hopes on the bombs being disarmed quickly.
Lily Hart finished drying the water off them. With only four minutes left, she was also asking her system if there was a painless way to disarm the bombs.
The system replied that as long as she wanted it, it had everything—it was just a matter of price.
Lily Hart had plenty of points right now. She needed ten million points to advance to Level 6, but every time she was about to save up enough, some major event would occur that required her to spend a large amount.
As a result, she was stuck in a cycle and had never managed to save up enough.
’Hurry up, what’s your brilliant idea?’ Lily Hart urged.
’In the future, bombs and the like are total child’s play. All you need is a disruptor to stop it from functioning. Only 9,999 points each.’
Lily Hart scoffed. ’Is that all? I thought it would be expensive. Give me three!’
Just as Lily Hart was mocking the system, the bomb disposal expert turned to Elder Shaw with a guilty expression and reported, "I... I’ve done my best, but I’ve never seen this model of bomb before..."
Elder Shaw’s legs gave out, and he nearly collapsed. Fortunately, Roman Rowe was there to support him. He glanced at the time: three and a half minutes.
In a panic, he looked down and started operating his Light Brain, trying to contact that person. He was willing to do anything for his grandson. He didn’t give a damn about some bullshit position as head of the house!
But to his dismay, the anonymous account was one-way; he couldn’t send messages back.
Elder Shaw looked around, knowing someone must be watching nearby. His knees buckled, and he was about to kneel...
...when Lily Hart caught him. "What do you think you’re doing?"
She instructed Frost Shaw, "The old master is getting on in years. His legs are weak from standing so long. Quick, help him sit down." With that, she pulled out a chair.
Elder Shaw’s mind was a complete mess, filled with images of Fred being blown to bits. He was dazedly helped into the chair, still confused, and immediately tried to stand up again.
But Frost Shaw firmly pushed him back down by the shoulders.
Then he saw Lily Hart materialize a coin-sized silver disc. It looked incredibly intricate. His mind cleared a little. ’Boss Hart has a solution!’
Following the system’s instructions, Lily Hart placed the silver disc on the countdown timer. Everyone’s eyes were fixed on her.
Five seconds later, the countdown stopped.
The BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP sound vanished along with it.
Elder Shaw shot to his feet, his face breaking into a smile that crinkled all his wrinkles. He stammered, "Th-th-this... it’s done? It’s really over?"
He felt a joyous rush, as if he’d been whisked from hell to heaven in an instant.
Lily Hart nodded, calmly took out two more silver discs, and placed them on the timers of the bombs on Stewart Carter and Julius Carter. Five seconds later, their countdowns stopped as well.
A wave of suppressed cheers erupted from the crowd. The crisis was finally over.
Elder Shaw finally let out a breath of relief. He glanced at his Light Brain; the anonymous account hadn’t sent any more messages. Clearly, they had also seen that Lily Hart had dealt with the bombs with ease.
Lily Hart clapped her hands together. "Alright, let’s go home and get some sleep."
It was already nine when they’d come out, and after all this commotion, it was nearly eleven. She yawned. By this time, she’d usually be in bed scrolling on her Light Brain.
Elder Shaw glanced at her several times but didn’t say "thank you." That would only create an awkward distance between them.
The group had arrived in a great procession, and now they left in one.
The night was deep, and most of the survivors had gone back inside to sleep. Elder Shaw told everyone to tread lightly, and the large group returned in silence.
Lily Hart and her two companions also took the three little ones back to the lottery shop.
They parted ways again in front of the lottery shop. Lily Hart went upstairs to sleep. Easton and the others hadn’t dared to sleep, waiting for Frost Shaw and the children to return. They were relieved to see Stewart Carter and the others were okay.
Only then did they finally relax, and a wave of drowsiness washed over them instantly.
The little ones then went upstairs together, gathering in Easton’s room to whisper among themselves, asking Frederick Shaw and the others what had happened.
Were they scared? Was it dangerous...?
