The crimson sky trembled with the heavy thrum of approaching rotors.

Dark military transport helicopters descended through the haze, their floodlights slicing through the thick smoke and dust blanketing the boulevard. Inside, soldiers stood braced against the bay doors, rifles locked and loaded, their eyes hardened as they looked down at the slaughter.

The lead helicopter touched down with a heavy bounce.

The instant the doors opened, soldiers poured onto the street in tight tactical formation, unleashing a wall of suppressive fire into the advancing horde.

Ratatatatatat!

Golden streams of high-caliber rounds tore through bodies of zombies and mutated wolves, buying the exhausted students precious breathing room.

Another transport touched down. Then a third. Within seconds, a fully equipped military vanguard had established a perimeter.

Asher dropped from the sky a moment later, landing heavily on the ruined asphalt. The shockwave cracked the street beneath his boots.

He straightened slowly, his narrow black blade resting in his grip. His shoulder no longer bled; the severe wound he had suffered in the sky had already sealed shut following his breakthrough. The surge of fresh golden Qi made every muscle feel lighter, more precise.

His sharp gaze swept across the chaos until he spotted Adrian.

"I see you survived," Asher said as he approached his younger brother, noting the golden Qi humming along Adrian’s steel blade.

"I could say the same for you," Adrian replied flatly, though the tension in his shoulders visibly relaxed.

Asher gave a short nod, his eyes shifting toward Nyren. His gaze lingered on her cold, striking profile, holding a quiet depth he never voiced aloud.

Nyren.

For a fraction of a second, their eyes met. Nyren offered only a cool, indifferent glance before looking back toward the front line.

Asher’s expression didn’t crack. He was used to it. Her distant beauty and total unbothered detachment from others were precisely why he had fallen for her. But Nyren Ashford had never returned those feelings.

Before he could say anything further, a shrill, entitled voice broke through the gunfire.

"Soldier! Over here!"

A middle-aged man in a blood-stained lab coat sprinted toward one of the tactical officers. "Get me onto a transport immediately!"

The officer frowned, keeping his rifle trained on the perimeter. "Sir, we have trapped civilians and injured students across the entire sector. We need to secure the landing zone first."

"Do you have any idea who I am?!" The man’s face flushed with rage. "I am Professor Lanka from the Crown’s Advanced Research Division! My projects are personally funded by the three most influential houses in this country! If a single scratch touches me, your entire chain of command will answer for it!"

The soldier’s jaw tightened. "Professor, standing orders prioritize the wounded and children."

"I don’t give a damn about your orders!" Lanka pointed aggressively toward the idling helicopter. "Escort me inside now!"

As the soldier hesitated, a stray zombie lunged from the smoke.

BANG! The officer put a round through its skull without breaking eye contact. Lanka flinched, turning pale, but quickly sneered again. "Are you deaf?! Escort me!"

Before the officer could respond, three needle-thin ice bullets materialized in the air inches from Lanka’s nose, radiating a freezing vapor.

"You will wait for the weakened and helpless students to board first," Nyren said, stepping into his path.

She didn’t care about his titles or his political backers. Even before the apocalypse, she had never deferred to self-important authority, let alone now.

Besides, his lab coat was suspiciously clean for someone who claimed to have survived the bloody slaughter in the archives.

Lanka trembled, the icy Qi from the floating bullets stinging his skin. Had it been anyone else, he would have pulled rank, but standing before him was the Academy Student President—and the cold, lethal aura around her made it clear she wouldn’t hesitate to put a bullet through his knee. He shut his mouth, though his face remained twisted in arrogance.

Asher watched the exchange from a distance, his dark eyes turning cold. So this is what the apocalypse brings out in people.

Some grew stronger, some fought for others, and some simply showed the cowardly trash they had always been.

"Ignore him," Adrian muttered, glancing at Asher. "We have bigger problems."

GRAGHHHH!

A mutated Phantom Hyena lunged from the smoke.

Nyren reacted in a heartbeat. Her palm flashed silver as a dozen ice spears materialized around her and launched forward.

SHING! SHING! SHING!

The spears impaled the beast, pinning it to the pavement—but instead of blood spraying, the creature’s body flickered like static and vanished into thin air.

Nyren’s pupils shrank. An illusion?!

Before she could reset her stance, two more Phantom Hyenas emerged from the smog. Then four. Then seven. They sprinted from every direction, their forms blurring between reality and projection.

Two of them lunged straight for her throat.

Nyren raised both hands, her Qi flaring. "[Frozen Barrage]!"

A hail of sharp ice shards shot outward, shredding both Hyenas. Yet once again, their bodies distorted and dissolved into shadow.

Not real...

A sudden, freezing chill crept up her spine.

WSHHH!

Black, tendril-like vines erupted from the cracked asphalt behind her, whipping through the air like lethal vipers.

Nyren leaped backward. One tendril slammed into the ground where she had stood a millisecond ago, shattering the concrete. Another whipped toward her ribs.

She snapped her fingers, summoning silver ice plates that fused into a temporary shield.

BOOM!

The tendril smashed through the ice shield like glass.

Nyren’s eyes widened. "What the—"

More tendrils burst from the road, twisting across the front line and lashing out at soldiers and students alike.

"Get back!" Asher roared, blurring forward.

SHING!

His black sword flashed with golden Sword Qi, cleanly severing three tendrils mid-air. But to his shock, the severed pieces didn’t drop dead—they continued writhing on the ground, growing new tips.

One tendril wrapped around his blade, yanking hard.

Asher immediately released his grip, flipping backward through the air as the vine slammed his sword into the pavement. He landed smoothly, recalling the weapon back to his hand with a pulse of Qi.

Nyren landed beside him, breathing slightly heavy.

"You good?" Adrian asked, covering her flank.

"I’m fine," she said quietly, her sharp eyes scanning the tendrils. She had seen this visual signature before—it matched the parasitic shadow energy from the high-tier Hyenas Seana had fought hours ago.

BOOM!

The thousand-eyed armored centipede suddenly burst out from the asphalt beside the 30-meter spiked behemoth. It vaulted into the air, its mandibles clicking furiously, before plunging straight back underground.

BOOOOOOM!!

The entire street buckled. Rocks, dirt, and concrete exploded outward in a massive shockwave. Nyren, Asher, and General Ashford were thrown backward by the kinetic impact.

The centipede moved beneath the surface at terrifying speed, the earth bulging like a subterranean tidal wave.

General Ashford slammed his fist of white Qi into the dirt, trying to crush it below, but the beast dodged the strike beneath the bedrock.

SWISH!

Spikes of compressed earth shot upward from the road. The three fighters reacted instantly, leaping into the air—but the subterranean monster had anticipated their move.

A colossal armored tail whipped out from the dust, swinging through the air like a steel beam.

Nyren, Asher, and the General twisted mid-air, barely dodging the main impact as the tail slammed into the adjacent academy wall.

BOOM!

The structural collapse triggered a secondary avalanche of massive stone blocks, burying Nyren and the others beneath a wall of heavy debris.

Nyren felt as though every rib in her chest had been fractured. A wave of profound, suffocating fatigue washed over her cells.

Yet as she pushed a heavy concrete slab off her legs, she refused to stay down. Not when they were this close to surviving.

Her eyes drifted past her father and brother, who were already blasting through the rubble, toward the center of the battlefield.

Her gaze landed on Lothe.

He moved like a seasoned war god among the mountains of corpses, handling the chaos as if he owned the entire zone. His black spear flashed with violent purple Qi, shattering skulls and cleaving through beasts with effortless precision.

Is he... smirking?

For a fraction of a second, she thought she caught a faint, cold smile on his lips.

Ever since meeting him, his absolute, unshakeable confidence had irritated her. His complete indifference toward the lives of the panicking crowd around him made it even worse. Yet watching him now, a strange, competitive fire flared in her chest.

She looked over at Seana, whose black hair whipped through the wind as her Blood Moon Sword carved a path of crimson carnage, perfectly covering Lothe’s blind spots.

Why are they so different? Where does that confidence come from? What gave them the strength to reach that level?

Since childhood, Nyren Ashford had never considered herself inferior to anyone. She had always walked with her head held high as a genius.

No. It won’t end here.

The world had broken, but she refused to be left behind. She needed more power.

She needed to survive—not just to escape, but to stand at the top of this new world.

Suddenly, a twenty-foot spear of compressed earth shot straight out of the ground, aiming directly for her trapped father and brother!

General Ashford and Asher were still fighting off the heavy rock collapse, unable to dodge in time.

The earthen spear was inches from impaling them—

When it suddenly froze in mid-air.

Asher and General Ashford looked up in shock at the suspended projectile.

Frost began crawling along the spear’s tip. It spread at terrifying speed, turning the dark soil into solid, glistening blue ice.

CRACK! SHATTER!

The earthen spear exploded into thousands of frozen shards, hovering in the air under a powerful magnetic draft.

WHOOSH!

Nyren rose into the air, her long silver hair fluttering wildly in the icy gale. Her eyes burned with a cold, terrifying light as her Qi Core flared to its absolute limit.

The hovering ice shards trembled, reshaping themselves into dozens of razor-sharp, drill-like ice crystals.

Nyren glanced down at the churning earth where the centipede lurked.

"I don’t care how deep you burrow," her voice rang out like frost on metal. "Since you love the dirt so much... let me freeze you inside it!"

She flicked her hand downward.

The ice drills shot into the earth like a storm of blue lightning.
