Chapter 467: Chapter 478: Misunderstanding

So, even though Zane Xavier knew this was his best chance to escape Stella Sterling, he made no move to do so. The thought didn’t even cross his mind.

He was simply surprised that Stella Sterling would trust him so completely. After the surprise came a wave of gratitude.

Then, his eyes scanned the room, searching for a wide enough spot to lay out the items he had gathered.

With a layer of padding, resting later wouldn’t be so uncomfortable.

As he arranged the makeshift bed, he was also thinking, ’When I rest later, I can’t sleep too deeply. I have to stay alert.’

’This place may be deserted and the village abandoned, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.’

’Anything could happen in this apocalypse. Who knows if there’s anyone else left in this village.’

’Or what other sudden dangers might appear?’

’There are only two of us here, and Miss Sterling is already asleep. So even when I rest, I can’t let myself fall completely unconscious.’

’I have to keep my guard up. If any sudden danger arises, I’ll be able to sense it immediately and give us both time to prepare.’

’We can’t both be dead to the world. It would be a pathetic joke if something happened and we were both killed in our sleep without ever knowing.’

He continued tidying up as these thoughts ran through his mind. He was the only one by Miss Sterling’s side now. As her most loyal henchman, their safety naturally fell to him.

Suddenly, his gaze fixed on a spot on the floor not far away.

He looked over, suspicious. The next moment, he rubbed his eyes, wondering if he was seeing things.

He immediately stood up, walked over, and picked up the object from the floor.

His eyes widened in shock once more!

’Is this a fresh apple core?!’

’Where did this come from?’

His gaze instantly sharpened with vigilance, his eyes darting to every corner of the house.

He seemed to be searching for a suspicious figure.

His entire body tensed up.

The apple core hadn’t been there before. He was certain it had appeared in the short time he’d been away from this spot.

And by the looks of it, it was fresh. Someone must have eaten an apple and dropped the core here just a moment ago.

’So who was here? Did someone come by just now?’

At that thought, the hair on his arms stood on end!

’That person might be hiding in the darkness right now, watching my every move. I have to be careful.’

He was deeply shocked. In this post-apocalyptic world, ravaged by natural and man-made disasters, all the crops outside of a few large bases had long since died out.

Fresh fruit like this was basically impossible to find. Even in the large bases, they mainly grew grains for survival.

Fruit was rarely cultivated, and any existing stock was incredibly precious.

Who could possibly still be eating something so valuable? And that person had been right here, next to them.

His eyes swept the room again, but he saw no one. Still, he didn’t let his guard down.

Every muscle in his body was coiled tight. He hurried to Stella Sterling’s side. "Miss Sterling! Miss Sterling, wake up! We’re in danger!"

The thought that someone might be lurking in the shadows, watching their every move, made his heart race.

’I have to wake Miss Sterling now. She can’t keep sleeping.’

Stella Sterling really had been asleep. She had slept soundly, completely unworried that Zane Xavier would do anything to her.

But she was a light sleeper by nature, a habit she had developed over many years.

So, the moment Zane Xavier called out, she was awake.

Being woken so abruptly left Stella Sterling feeling rather displeased.

However, she wasn’t an unreasonable person. Suppressing her irritation at being woken, she asked in a low voice, "What is it?"

’He’d better have a good reason for this. Otherwise, this irritation from being woken up so suddenly isn’t going to go away easily.’

Zane Xavier was too frantic to notice the flicker of displeasure in Stella Sterling’s eyes. Seeing that she was awake, he said hurriedly, "Miss Sterling, I think we’re being watched! Someone’s been in this room. We need to get up and leave, now!"

Hearing this, Stella Sterling was surprised. ’If someone had been here, there’s no way I wouldn’t have known.’

’With my current level of perception, I would have sensed them immediately.’

But he didn’t look like he was lying. So she asked, "What happened?"

Hearing her question, Zane Xavier, though anxious, explained his theory. At the same time, he held the fresh apple core out for Stella Sterling to see.

"Miss Sterling, look. Someone clearly just ate this. Maybe that person was here just a moment ago. I don’t know why they didn’t attack us, but having someone watching us from the shadows is a ticking time bomb. To be safe, we should either find and eliminate them, or get out of here right now."

However, upon seeing the apple core in his hand, Stella Sterling’s expression turned strange and complicated.

She looked up at the anxious Zane Xavier, her earlier irritation slowly fading. She said with a sigh, "No one was here."

Seeing Zane Xavier about to launch into another anxious analysis, she quickly cut in, "I’m the one who ate the apple. You don’t have to worry."

Zane Xavier’s frantic expression froze on his face.

He was silent for a long moment. After what felt like an eternity, he finally processed her words and stammered, "Miss Sterling... you’re saying you ate this?"

Stella Sterling nodded definitively.

In an instant, Zane Xavier felt a wave of embarrassment. He hadn’t expected to make such a fool of himself.

It made sense, though. If an intruder had really been there, why would they have done nothing and simply left? There were no Good Samaritans in this apocalyptic world.

With such a perfect opportunity, any lurker would have surely struck.

He hadn’t understood it before, but now it all clicked into place. No one else had been there at all. It was just the two of them.

He chuckled sheepishly, trying to hide his embarrassment.

At the same time, he felt bad for having woken Miss Sterling over nothing.

But if he had to do it all over again, he would have done the same thing.

After all, given the circumstances, he had genuinely believed someone else was lurking in the shadows. For their safety, he’d had no choice but to wake Miss Sterling.
