Apocalypse Rebirth: Making Billions With My Fortune-Telling Skill
Chapter 206: Am I short?Instead of heading straight upstairs to her room, April turned toward the dining hall.
The quiet, ambient lighting softened the vastness of the estate, casting warm shadows over the polished dark mahogany table.
April pulled out a chair and sat down, placing her freshly bought snacks—a box of imported chocolate biscuits and a bag of savory chips—directly onto the smooth wooden surface.
She needed a moment to breathe. The cold, crimson numbers of the system update—22 DAYS—were still burning faintly against the back of her mind, along with those strange, cryptic quests.
Her thoughts were a chaotic web, and she was trying to calm herself down before sunrise forced her into action.
Xavier pulled out the chair across from her, settling his broad frame into it. As always, his sharp, dark eyes scanned her face, carefully looking for any hidden fatigue or unspoken trouble.
"Any news on the Morgans?" April asked, breaking the silence as she rested her chin in her hand.
Xavier nodded, his expression darkening slightly into business mode. "Samuel briefed me earlier. He received initial intelligence from Nat’s network, and after running our own verification, we confirmed that the Morgan family is hosting a grand banquet in two days."
He paused, resting his hands on the table. "Officially, it’s a celebration for their newest launch. They’ve invited every major figure in the city—and yes, I received an official invitation. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t waste my time attending, but given the current situation, I plan to go."
"The Morgans are likely trying to smooth things over with you if they sent you an invitation after being black listed," April murmured, a subtle, cold glint entering her dark brown eyes. "Especially after how badly they got humiliated at the auction."
"Most likely," Xavier agreed smoothly.
"I think that’s the right stage for us to strike," April said cleanly.
She didn’t have a grand, overly theatrical scheme mapped out yet, but the path forward was straightforward enough. Humiliate them publicly, strip away their fortune, and tear down every pillar of power they relied on.
Madam Morgan had tormented her for a decade in her past life. Back then, April had assumed the woman simply hated her pretty face—never imagining that Madam Morgan was actively being paid by Eleanor to make her life a living hell.
Now, she would repay every single drop of that cruelty to absolute satisfaction.
April let out a slow breath, looking across the table at Xavier. "Xavier. Tomorrow morning, I’m holding an urgent meeting early. Nat is coming, and he said he’d inform Alexander, but just in case, please make sure Alexander is here too."
Xavier’s brows knit together slightly at her heavy tone. "What is the meeting about?"
April stared at him, her voice quiet, steady, and chillingly absolute. "Our future."
A heavy silence fell over the dining room. Xavier went still, the sheer gravity of her words settling into his chest. He didn’t pry or ask for hints; he simply gave her a single, firm nod. "All right. I’ll make sure Samuel is there as well."
"Yes, very important," April added, nodding to that.
For a long moment, April sat quietly, her fingers lightly tapping against the wooden table. Then, she looked up, her expression softening into something rare and quiet.
"Xavier?"
"Yes, April?"
"Thank you."
Xavier blinked, slightly stunned. "What for, April?"
"I’m just thanking you," April murmured, leaning back against her chair.
She couldn’t bring herself to list out every single thing—the way he took care of her logistics, provided his home for her to stay free of charge, was currently shielding her sister, or how he simply stood as an unyielding wall of support.
She wasn’t ungrateful that she didn’t see all of it, but she did not know how to be sentimental or overly expressive of gratitude. So, she kept the details to herself, letting the words ’thank you’ hang between them.
A genuine, warm smile touched Xavier’s lips—a soft, relaxed expression that transformed his usually stern, formidable face. "I’m glad you appreciate my presence... and my effort."
April nodded quietly, looking down at the box of chocolate biscuits sitting on the table. Suddenly, her brow furrowed slightly as a lingering annoyance bubbled back up to the surface.
"Xavier?"
"Yes, April?"
"Am I short?"
Xavier froze mid-breath, completely caught off guard. He blinked once, then twice, staring at her as if she had suddenly started speaking a foreign language. "Where... is that coming from?"
April pointed a finger down at the snacks she had laid out on the table. "I tried to get a box of these biscuits off the shelf at the store this evening, but I couldn’t reach it."
Xavier took a second to process the image of the untouchable seer struggling with a convenience store snack shelf. A tiny twitch appeared at the corner of his mouth. "Well... it’s not your fault they made the racks too high."
"Right? I thought of that," April replied solemnly, leaning forward with an unusually expressive pout. "But then Nat said they should make those racks ’normal height’ because of short people. I think he was referring to me."
Xavier couldn’t hold it back anymore. A low, deep laugh broke from his chest, his shoulders shaking as he covered his mouth with two fingers.
April’s eyes narrowed into an icy glare. "What? Is it funny? Am I really that short?"
Xavier shook his head quickly, trying—and failing—to suppress his laughter as he looked at her ruffled expression. "No, April, you are not short. You are... average. Actually, you are a bit tall for a woman. I would never consider you short."
"Right?" April muttered, slumping back into her leather chair with a faint huff. "But Nat was definitely implying I was short. He was even laughing at me! He had the nerve to tell me that ’if it makes me feel better’, I’m ’taller than most women my age.’ What does that even mean?! If it makes me feel better?!"
She was literally sitting there complaining, venting like a completely normal twenty-six-year-old woman over a silly joke made about her height.
Xavier watched her, a quiet, profound fondness washing over him. He loved this rare, unscripted moment.
Amidst all the grim apocalyptic preparations, massive budget calculations, and heavy military preparations, seeing her drop her clinical mask and just exist freely in front of him made him feel wonderfully human. He let out another soft laugh.
"This isn’t funny, Xavier," April grumbled, folding her arms. "I really felt like I was short all of a sudden. It’s because you guys are all just so ridiculously tall and huge. I feel small in comparison."
Xavier smiled warmly, leaning his elbows on the table. "Well... ’if it makes you feel any better,’ you are the exact same height as your sister."
April went still. Her gears in her head turned silently for three seconds. Is Emily short? No, Emily isn’t short at all. That means... I am definitely not short.
Consoling herself with this indisputable logic, April let out a satisfied breath and relaxed back into her chair.
