Apocalypse Rebirth: Making Billions With My Fortune-Telling Skill
Chapter 213: The FuneralEmily looked up from the bed, her brown eyes softening as she stood up. "I’m ready."
The two sisters made their way downstairs, where Samuel was already waiting near the main entrance.
April did not glance towards the dining area, trying to avoid the arguing parties as best as possible.
Outside on the driveway, a sleek, armored black sedan sat flanked by two discreet, high-spec SUV escorts, the ones April had specifically said she didn’t need.
"Miss April, Miss Emily," Samuel greeted them with a polished, respectful bow, holding the passenger door open. "The route to the mortuary has been cleared."
April gave him a concise nod as she and Emily stepped into the spacious back seat of the sedan.
April adjusted her black dress and then looked towards Emily who was sitting nervously by her side. She gripped the edge of her seat, her other hand trembling slightly on her lap.
April wanted to give words of comfort, but no words came out of her lips and so, she just kept quiet. Instead, she reached out, covering Emily’s hand with her own, offering a quiet, steady presence.
The door closed with a heavy, vacuum-sealed thud, cutting off all outside noise as the car smoothly glided out of the courtyard of Reed’s Estate and was headed for the mortuary.
After a smooth drive, the car pulled up to the private mortuary facility which was directly next to the church grounds. Samuel stepped out first, scanning the area before opening the door for them.
He led them inside to the quiet, cold room where Beatrice Gabriel’s body was currently being kept. The air was chilly. The director respectfully pulled back the white sheet covering her face, allowing the sisters to step forward and take a look.
There lay Beatrice. Her face, once gaunt and worn down by years of poisoning and abuse in the Gabriel house, now looked serene and rested in the quiet cold.
Emily stared down at her mother, her breath hitching as silent tears welled in her eyes.
"When would you like the burial to take place?" Samuel asked softly, stepping beside them.
Emily turned her head, looking up at him with a fragile yet resolute gaze. "Is it... is it okay to have it right away?" Her voice trembled slightly. "Mother has suffered for too long. I want to hurry and lay her to rest... as soon as possible."
Samuel looked toward April for confirmation. April gave him a single, clear nod, agreeing to her sister’s decision.
"Understood," Samuel replied cleanly. He turned and walked over to the mortuary director, immediately arranging for a pastor to perform the burial rites right away and securing a private plot in the church cemetery.
While the preparations were being finalized, April led Emily out of the cold room and into the quiet, sunlit sanctuary of the church. They sat side by side on one of the wooden pews.
"You know..." Emily whispered, staring down at her lap as she sniffed softly. "Mother didn’t have any friends. She was lonely... just like me. That’s why it was so easy for Father and Eleanor to abuse and trample her. There was no one she could run to."
April’s eyes narrowed slightly. "What about family? Where did she come from?"
Emily shook her head weakly. "I don’t know, April. She never said, and it looked like she had no one. If she did have a family, she definitely would have gone to them for help, but..." She trailed off, swallowing back a quiet sob.
"It’s okay," April said softly. She leaned over and wrapped her arm around Emily, letting her sister drop her head onto her shoulder. "She can rest now. She will no longer be tormented by anyone."
They sat together in the quiet sanctuary for several minutes, the peaceful stillness offering a fleeting moment of solace.
Soon, Samuel walked up the aisle toward them, stopping at a respectful distance. "Miss April, Miss Emily. The pastor is ready, and the plot has been prepared. It is time for the burial rites."
Both sisters stood up, smoothing down their black dresses. Taking a deep breath together, they turned to follow Samuel out into the courtyard to bid their mother a final, peaceful farewell.
The two sisters walked side-by-side out into the serene, sunlit churchyard, following Samuel toward the private burial plot.
April glanced toward the edge of the courtyard, and lo and behold, she discovered that they weren’t alone. Standing respectfully at a distance under the shade of a wide oak tree were Nat, Xavier, and Alexander... And Oliver, of course.
None of them were about to let April come alone on this day—especially when Nat had so boldly declared it his chance to pay respects to his ’mother-in-law.’ They had even stopped at a flower shop along the way.
Now, each man held a pristine, carefully chosen bouquet to mourn the dead, and also pay their respect as a potential son in law.
Xavier stood stoic and solemn with an arrangement of white lilies, Alexander held a delicate bundle of fresh white roses, and Nat cradled a stunning spray of rare orchids, his usual smirk completely gone, replaced by a quiet, grounded respect.
They didn’t intrude on the sisters’ private moment, choosing instead to stand as an unyielding wall of silent protection from afar.
The pastor stood by the freshly prepared grave, holding a small Bible. As April and Emily stepped up to the edge, the quiet ceremony began.
The pastor’s soft, solemn voice drifted through the cool breeze, reading scriptures of peace, eternal rest, and comfort for the departed soul. Emily held April’s arm tightly, tears slipping silently down her cheeks as she listened to the words she had wished to hear for three long, agonizing years.
When the pastor concluded the final prayer, bowing his head in reverence, Samuel stepped forward with a small silver bowl filled with soil.
Emily took a small handful, her hand trembling as she let the dark soil trickle down onto the casket below. "Rest well, Mother," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind. "No one can hurt you anymore."
April took her turn, tossing a handful of earth down with a calm, unshakeable steady hand.
I might’ve never met you, I might’ve never held your hand, touched your face or seen your smile, but I know you now. I know you fought, I know you tried all you could... I know if I had not been stolen from you, I would have known your warmth as well... But alas. April thought, her dark eyes locking onto the dark earth below. Your suffering is over now. Rest easy. I will protect Emily, and I will make sure every single person who brought you pain pays for it tenfold.
