Apocalypse Rebirth: Making Billions With My Fortune-Telling Skill
Chapter 217: Good as newApril turned away from the doctor, her eyes settling on Samuel, who was still standing beside her with a complex look in his eyes. "Do you resent me for beating the crap out of your ex?"
"No, Miss April," Samuel replied without a single second of hesitation. "However..."
He stepped forward, taking a careful, gentle look at her hands. The pristine white skin across her palms and knuckles was visibly reddened from the force of the blows and slaps. "Your hand... You shouldn’t have carried out such physical actions by yourself."
A subtle, dangerous smirk touched April’s lips. "Why? Would you have hit her for me had I asked?"
She expected him to either stay silent out of corporate propriety or awkwardly shake his head. But to her complete surprise, Samuel looked her dead in the eye, gave a single, firm nod, and spoke clearly.
"If it is something that makes you feel better... yes."
April went silent for a brief second, taken aback by his unyielding resolve. Then, with a soft scoff, she reached up and flicked him sharply on the forehead.
"Dumb, Samuel," April muttered, though her tone held no real bite. "I told you to be more confident in yourself. If you still love her, wouldn’t I be the villain for asking you to lay a hand on her?"
"I no longer love her," Samuel claimed softly, his tone completely calm and grounded. "My heart, and my duty, all lie in serving you to the fullest."
The heavy, lingering silence that followed was shattered instantly.
Xavier, Nat, and Alexander—who had been watching the exchange with increasingly narrowed eyes—decided to break it up right then and there. They didn’t like the trajectory of this conversation one bit.
"Samuel," Xavier spoke up, his deep voice cutting cleanly through the air as he stepped forward. "Since this incident occurred on your account, you are in charge of clearing the site."
Xavier looked down with total indifference at the twitching, unconscious figure of Mei, whose face was practically unrecognizable from the swelling.
"Remove her from the premises and dump her somewhere," Xavier ordered coldly. "Take her home if you have to, but make sure April is entirely removed from her mess."
"Yes, sir. I will get it done." Samuel replied professionally, bowing his head as the rest of the group escorted April toward the waiting vehicles.
As soon as April got into the car, Emily immediately reached out to grab her hand and looked at the reddened skin "April, are you okay?"
April looked down at her sister’s genuine, worried face, a soft, rare smile touching her lips. "It does hurt a bit, but it won’t hurt for long."
With a subtle flick of her wrist, a micro-distortion rippled through the air, and a small, crystal-clear vial of spatial revitalization spring water manifested directly into her palm. April unstoppered the small bottle and drank it down in one smooth gulp.
Almost instantaneously, a gentle warmth spread through her fingers. The reddened, chafed flesh across her palms and knuckles rapidly cooled, fading back into a smooth, healthy glow as every trace of sting completely vanished.
She held her hand up, flexing her fingers cleanly in front of Emily.
"See?" April murmured, her dark eyes softening into a quiet warmth. "Good as new."
"Your powers amaze me, April," Emily murmured, carefully inspecting her sister’s hand, turning it over to check every inch of the smooth, unblemished skin.
"It comes in handy," April replied softly, offering a faint, reassuring smile as she shrugged.
Before the sedan could pull out of the mortuary lot, the front passenger door opened, and Xavier slid smoothly into the front seat.
Since their cover had already been completely blown during the confrontation, there was no longer any point in maintaining a distant profile.
Thud.
A moment later, the driver’s side door clicked open. Nat grabbed the driver by the collar, casually pulling him out of the vehicle onto the pavement before sliding his massive frame into the driver’s seat.
He adjusted the leather back and lowered the steering column to accommodate his long legs and broad shoulders.
"There. Much better," Nat drawled, tossing his phone onto the dashboard and turning the ignition key.
April stared at the back of their heads, her brow twitching. "Is this some sort of hostile takeover?"
"Call it whatever you want, sweetheart," Nat cackled deeply, catching her gaze in the rearview mirror with a dangerous glint in his eye. "But yes, it is a takeover."
Before April could even register his response, the rear door on her right clicked open. Alexander stood outside, leaning down to look into the cabin.
"Move over, April," Alexander said cleanly.
"Wait, what—"
Before she even got the chance to shift, Alexander was already pushing his larger body onto the leather seat beside her, sliding in with easy, unbothered confidence.
Emily quickly shifted as far to the other end of the rear seat as possible, making extra room so April wouldn’t be completely pressed against Alexander’s broad shoulder.
April pressed her hand to her forehead, letting out an exasperated breath. "Seriously, what is going on with you three? Are you guys insane?"
A heavy, sudden silence fell over the interior of the sedan for a second.
Up front, Xavier stared straight ahead, his jaw tight. Nat grinned into the rearview mirror, and Alexander casually smoothed down his jacket. In their minds, the collective answer was practically unanimous: Yup.
"Forget that," Alexander spoke up smoothly, completely bypassing her question with a confident smile. "What would you like for breakfast? My treat."
"Can we have pancakes?" Emily spoke first, her hand shyly raised in the quiet cabin. "I mean... we could have that along with anything you all want."
Her voice got smaller and smaller as she spoke, shrinking back into her seat as if embarrassed for speaking up, but April caught her hand mid-air and gave it a reassuring squeeze.
"Pancakes sound nice," April said softly, looking at her twin before turning her dark eyes toward the front seats. "We can get a full breakfast spread—fluffy buttermilk pancakes, maple syrup, whipped butter, crispy bacon, smoked sausages, scrambled eggs, and fresh fruit."
"Sounds good," Nat said, a dark, wicked grin spreading across his face as he slammed his hand onto the gear shift. He shifted the sedan into drive as if he were lining up on a drag strip for a race. "Hold on tight, suckers... and sweethearts... we’re hitting the road."
"Please drive carefully," Alexander said, his tone laced with a desperate restraint that sounded almost like he was begging, knowing there was simply no predicting what that psychopath behind the wheel would do.
Before Alexander could even finish his sentence, Nat floored the accelerator. The high-spec engine roared to life, and the heavy black sedan shot out of the church parking lot like a missile, leaving a streak of burnt rubber on the pavement as they sped toward the city center.
While this group were heading for breakfast, Samuel was running his own errand.
