Apocalypse Rebirth: Making Billions With My Fortune-Telling Skill
Chapter 222: Just... A GiftNat stood right beside April, shoving his free hand into his trouser pocket while his other hand kept a loose, gentle hold of hers, his thumb lightly stroking the back of her knuckles.
"So," Nat spoke softly, his usual arrogant drawl softening into something remarkably quiet, "what do you think? The view here is great, right?"
April stood in silence for a long moment, staring out at the glowing city that, in just three short weeks, would be reduced to ash, blood, and ruins.
"Yeah," April whispered, her voice lost in the gentle mountain breeze. "It’s... really beautiful."
"I knew you’d like it," Nat murmured.
He let go of her hand, stepping closer until he was standing directly in front of her. April blinked, looking up into his dark eyes, which were reflection-lit by the distant city below.
Nat reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it to reveal a delicate, shimmering silver chain holding a minimalist pendant—a polished, sharp ’A’ crafted from pristine white gold.
"I heard that when a guy is genuinely interested in a lady, he gives her gifts," Nat said softly, lifting the necklace from its velvet cushion. "I know I’ve expressed myself a lot of times, but I figured... I should give you something normal for once."
April’s brows twitched slightly. "Normal?"
"Yeah," Nat smirked, stepping behind her. His broad chest lightly brushed against her back, his warm breath fanning against her neck as he carefully gathered her brown hair to one side. "A necklace is a normal way to go, isn’t it? No weapons, no contracts, no strategic assets. Just... a gift."
He looped the cool silver chain around her neck, his large fingers working the small clasp with surprising, delicate precision behind her nape.
April tilted her head back slightly, her dark eyes reflecting the faint moonlight as she felt the cool metal rest against her skin. "Do you feel like you have to be normal to express yourself properly? Is that what this is? You think giving me something normal would impress me?"
"Would it?" Nat asked, letting out a low, rumbling chuckle as his fingers finished securing the clasp.
He didn’t pull away immediately; instead, his hands rested lightly on her shoulders, his thumbs making small, absentminded circles against her fabric before he stepped around to face her again.
"I just wanted to give you something normal, sweetheart," he murmured, his eyes sweeping over her face with a quiet, grounded warmth. "Not because I think it’s the only way to impress you. Let’s be honest... you’re far from normal."
April let out a faint scoff, her fingers rising to lightly trace the smooth curve of the silver ’A’ against her collarbone. "Coming from a mafia boss, I’ll take that as a compliment."
"It is," Nat said softly. "So tell me, how do you feel about this normal gift?"
April pressed her lips together, her chest tightening with a sudden unfamiliar, complex weight.
Her mind instinctively scrambled to find a way to brush it off. Whenever he proposed or made playful claims about her being his, she simply categorized it as his usual teasing—a dangerous man playing games, or someone trying to secure her Fortune-Telling ability for his own survival. She could literally come up with any excuse to wave it all off but now?
Now, standing here under the stars, with the quiet weight of the silver pendant resting against her skin, the sincerity in his action was too real to dismiss as a joke.
She didn’t want to be rude, nor did she want to lead him on, but the sheer weight of his quiet focus was making her usual sharp tongue feel clumsy.
"It’s... it’s very beautiful, Nat," April said quietly, her fingers lightly touching the silver letter. "It’s really nice jewelry."
Nat let out a soft, low smile, his eyes scanning her face with an uncharacteristic tenderness. "Yeah, I know. Only the best for you, sweetheart."
He reached out, his hand moving slowly as his fingers gently tucked a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear.
His palm lingered against the curve of her jawline, his thumb lightly brushing across her cheekbone. The heat of his touch was grounding, almost dizzying in the cold night air.
April stayed still, her eyes locking onto his. The space between them shrank as Nat leaned down slightly, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to meet her eyes.
"In this line of work... in this whole damn world, there’s no one I trust," Nat confessed softly, his voice dropping into a low, rough murmur that carried an intense, raw honesty she had never heard from him before. "I’m always looking behind my back. Always expecting a blade in the spine or a bullet in the dark. That’s how I’ve survived."
He paused, his thumb pausing against her cheek, his eyes locking onto hers with terrifying depth.
"But then I look at you," Nat continued, a faint, breathless laugh escaping his chest. "I watch you do your thing... and I just smile. I trust you, April. I trust you so much it’s ridiculous. I feel like I’m willingly throwing myself right into a pit."
April’s breath hitched in her throat, her heart giving an unexpected, sharp thud against her ribs. "Nat..."
"And the crazy part?" Nat added, his gaze softening into absolute, unyielding devotion. "I’m not even mad about it. I don’t care that I’m throwing myself into a hole I can’t climb out of... because as deep as this pit is, it’s the only place that connects me to you."
The quiet confession hung between them in the silent night, heavy and undeniable.
April looked up at his handsome, sharp features, her mind spinning. Was he really making a completely genuine, unmasked confession right now?
"I’m glad you trust me, Nat," April began softly, trying to keep her footing amidst the sudden wave of emotion. "But you know that trust isn’t all it takes to—"
"I know," Nat cut her off softly, his fingers gently pressing against her cheek to silence her. A lazy, breathtaking smirk slowly returned to his lips as he looked down at her. "I know. Just... Let me finish."
