Apocalypse Rebirth: Making Billions With My Fortune-Telling Skill
Chapter 229: Running into MatildaMeanwhile, down the quiet, secluded east gallery, Emily was making her way back from the washroom.
The loud hum of the main ballroom was muffled here, replaced by the soft click of her heels against the polished marble floor. Here, she felt she could breath. And with Samuel and Alexander behind her like an impenetrable formation, she didnt shudder or fear that someone would suddenly attack her. Once again, she had her sister to thank.
Alexander kept one hand casually tucked in his trousers, his eyes lazily scanning the shadowy archways and display cases lining the hall. Samuel remained the picture of immaculate and disciplined, though his sharp eyes kept darting around, picking up every micro-movement in the environment that might as well serve as a threat.
"Thank you both for coming with me," Emily said softly, glancing back at them with a shy, appreciative smile as they walked down the quiet, secluded east gallery. "I know it must be silly to need two men of your respectable caliber just for a trip to the washroom."
"Not silly at all, Miss Emily," Samuel replied smoothly, his tone even and reverent. "Miss April’s instructions are absolute. Where you are concerned, no precaution is ever excessive."
"Besides," Alexander added with a smooth smirk. "walking alongside a lady who looks like she was sculpted from pure starlight is far more entertaining than listening to old men talk about stock margins."
Emily’s cheeks flushed a soft, delicate pink, and she offered a quiet, grateful smile.
As they rounded the marble corner near the private domestic staff quarters, a sharp, bitter voice cut through the quiet gallery.
"Well, well, well. Look what dragged itself out of the gutter."
Matilda, the housekeeper of the Morgan estate, stepped out of the side corridor holding a clipboard. Tonight, she was dressed in her rigid, dark uniform, her face was pinched into its usual permanent sneer.
Matilda’s eyes swept over the figure in front of her, and her brain instantly misfired. She didn’t realize there were twins. In her eyes, the woman standing before her in the dazzling white diamond gown, crowned with a sparkling tiara, was the very same maid she had spent a decade tormenting, and the same one who had humiliated her at the boutique the last time.
"I don’t know whose stolen dress you’re wearing, you ungrateful little bitch!" Matilda spat, stepping aggressively into Emily’s path, her face twisted with bitter rage. "Did you think slapping on some fake diamonds would make you—"
Emily stopped dead in her tracks, her brow furrowing in genuine, total confusion. She looked at the harsh, sneering woman in front of her as if examining a bizarre stain on the carpet.
"Who are you?" Emily asked, her voice quiet and completely bewildered.
Samuel’s eyes narrowed into dark, deadly slits. His scowl deepened as he stepped half a pace forward, his voice dropping into a low, venomous growl beside Emily’s ear.
"This is the housekeeper of the Morgan estate, Miss Emily," Samuel explained softly, though every word dripped with suppressed murderous intent. "She is one of the vile insects who routinely tormented Miss April during her time under this roof."
Matilda scoffed loudly, tossing her head back with a sharp, ugly laugh. "Oh, brilliant! So now you’re going to pretend you have amnesia, huh, April? Trying to play the innocent victim in front of your new keepers?!"
Matilda’s eyes slid past Emily, taking in the towering, pristine presence of Alexander Greels. Her gaze locked onto his custom double-breasted suit, the gold cufflinks, and the untouchable air of absolute wealth surrounding him. A sharp, filthy realization seemed to spark in her twisted mind, and a vicious, triumphant sneer spread across Matilda’s face.
"Ah, I get it now," Matilda drawled, stepping even closer, her voice dripping with disgust. "I see you’ve finally learned how to spread your legs for some rich fools just to climb out of the mud—"
Samuel’s eyes went completely, terrifyingly dead. A dark, murderous instinct flared in his chest, his hand moving from his side to probably attempt to break the woman’s neck where she stood for daring to utter such filthy accusations against Miss April.
Before Samuel or Alexander could take a single step forward, however—
SLAP!
A violent, stinging crack echoed brutally down the quiet marble gallery.
Matilda’s head snapped violently to the side, her breath catching in a choked gasp as the sheer force of the blow sent her stumbling back against the stone wall, her clipboard clattering to the floor. She clutched her burning, quickly swelling cheek in complete, utterly stunned horror.
Standing in front of her was Emily.
The soft, shy, timid girl who had never once raised her voice, who had spent her entire life shrinking into the shadows, who had taken every insult, every beating, and every sneer with her lips sealed and her hands clutched to her chest was now trembling—not from fear, but from an overwhelming fury.
Emily didn’t know who this bitter housekeeper was. She had never set foot in the Morgan estate, and she had no idea how this woman had made April’s life a living hell. But the moment Matilda spat those vile, disgusting accusations—trying to drag her sister’s honor through the dirt, assuming this grand life was bought through shame—a dark, dormant switch flipped inside Emily’s chest.
Emily was just like Samuel. For herself, she would endure in silence. But for April—her pride, her savior, her beloved sister who had dragged them both out of hell, her joy—Emily would tear the world apart.
"Shut your filthy mouth," Emily whispered, her voice dropping into a bone-chilling, icy venom that sounded terrifyingly identical to April’s.
Emily took a step forward, towering over the cowering housekeeper, her dark eyes flashing with an unhinged, violent protectiveness.
"You dare speak about my sister like that?" Emily snarled softly, grabbing Matilda by the stiff collar of her uniform and yanked her forward until they were nose-to-nose. "If you ever breathe another foul, disgusting word about her again... I will make sure you don’t have a tongue left to speak with. I will yank it out with my bare hands in the roughest way possible to make sure you feel every bit of the pain."
Matilda’s eyes bulged in pure, suffocating terror. She stared into Emily’s pitch-black, unyielding gaze, completely paralyzed, unable to process how a woman who looked like an angel could radiate the horrifying aura of a demon.
Behind Emily, Samuel froze mid-step. His eyes widened slightly as he stared at Emily’s back, a profound, chilling respect washing over him.
Beside him, Alexander let out a low, silent whistle, a slow, dark smirk spreading across his face as he watched the quiet twin deliver a masterclass in ruthless loyalty. I guess blood doesn’t lie. He thought, feeling the same type of chill he felt from April when she got serious... in a nasty way.
