Lifting her free hand, her fingers trembling slightly, April reached out and touched his face. Her thumb gently caressed the high plane of his cheekbone before sliding deeper into his dark hair.

Xavier’s eyes fluttered shut for a brief second at the warmth of her touch, his breathing hitching in his chest. When he opened his eyes again, April was leaning down toward him, her brown eyes softening so unnaturally that he felt as if he had stepped directly into a dream.

"Xavier," she whispered, her voice strangely sweet, fanning over his skin. "If that is all you wish, then I can accommodate it. It is the least I can do compared to all you’ve done for me."

Leaning over the slight distance between them, April gently pressed her lips against his forehead. It was a kiss he did not expect and did not know how to react to. It was soft, warm, and felt... very real.

It wasn’t a dream... Was it?

April whispered softly against his skin. "Please be my saint."

It wasn’t a transaction, a revenge plot, or a demand for survival supplies. It was a purely personal request born from her own selfish desire.

Xavier’s heart hammered furiously in his chest. He closed his eyes, interlocking his fingers tightly with hers as he drank in the sensation of her breath on his forehead, realizing he had finally breached the thick, impenetrable wall surrounding her heart.

"Yes, April," Xavier whispered back, his deep voice thick with emotion.

PING!

A sudden system chime echoed inside April’s mind, cutting through the heavy silence of the room and the pounding of her heart. A translucent, brilliant gold interface expanded right before her eyes.

[Trust Tier Achieved: Client ’Xavier Reed’ has reached 100% Trust Value!]

[Feature Activated: Lucky Foresight (Permanent).]

[Effect: Host can now view all positive events, windfall fortunes, and beneficial opportunities that will occur for ’Xavier’ within the next 24 hours.]

[No positive event in the next 24 hours]

April was still hung up on processing this update when another notification popped up.

[System Feature Unlocked: Named Pieces]

She blinked, her dark pupils contracting as she scanned the unprecedented, glowing blue interface that opened up directly underneath the main tab.

[NAMED PIECES]

Piece 1: Xavier Reed

Class: Saint

Power: [ ??? ]

Piece 2: [ Empty ]

Piece 3: [ Empty ]

What in the world... is this new update? April thought, her mind racing as she stared at the glowing title next to Xavier’s name.

She recalled when the system had offhandedly mentioned that ’all the pieces would soon be in place,’ a vague line she had dismissed at the time since she didn’t know what these pieces were.

When she had pressed for answers, it merely told her she would understand better on the day of the apocalypse.

And now this.

Does this mean the ’pieces’ are the people around me? Then, is Emily one of them too?

April glanced at her sleeping sister, her brow furrowing in deep confusion. It made no sense. They were supposed to be preparing for the apocalypse, yet these endless updates made it feel as though she were being dragged into a complex, hidden game she never agreed to play.

To make matters worse, the system refused to offer a single concrete explanation.

It was utterly exhausting.

Before her, Xavier noticed the subtle shift in her posture—the sudden, distant look in her eyes and the faint tension in her shoulders.

"Is something wrong, April?" Xavier asked softly, his fingers tightening slightly around hers.

April snapped back to the present, blinking away the glowing blue text as her dark eyes settled onto his face. "No. Nothing."

A strange, quiet realization settled in her chest. He became a ’Saint’ because I just asked him to be my saint. Her request had somehow directly influenced his designated class.

Her eyes drifted back to the system screen in her mind, locking onto the line beneath his name: Power: [???].

Power. What kind of power?

April looked back at Xavier, searching his face with careful scrutiny. "Do you feel any different?"

Xavier raised an eyebrow, genuinely bewildered by the sudden question. "Different how?"

"Like... suddenly magical?"

A faint, amused smile touched the corner of Xavier’s lips, though his confusion remained. "It doesn’t feel that way. If anything... I just feel lighter. Because you accepted me."

April shook her head softly, releasing a quiet sigh. Probably not that.

This constant string of mysteries was giving her a headache. The system was actively making things more difficult, withholding crucial details while dangling abstract features right in front of her face.

If it keeps hiding things and twisting the rules, how am I supposed to keep trusting it? she thought bitterly.

As if sensing her frustration, the air in front of her shimmered once more, printing a cold, automated prompt across her vision.

[System Alert: Host mental activity detected.]

[Do not doubt the system’s motives. Everything is calibrated for the Host’s ultimate survival and absolute benefit.]

April’s lips thinned into an irritated line. How could I not doubt it when features that never existed before keep surfacing without context?

Yet, as infuriating as it was, she knew there was no point in arguing with a silent, digital force. She would still have to follow its directives if she wanted to survive what was coming... Right?

She let out a long breath and mentally dismissed the floating window.

"All right, Xavier," April said softly, gently pulling her hand back. "I think that will be all for the night."

Xavier didn’t push or linger, though he remained on his knees for a second longer before standing up smoothly. "Very well, April."

He smoothed down his shirt, his expression returning to its usual stoic, refined composure, though his eyes retained that soft, unwavering warmth. "Regarding our prisoners... the three families locked in the subterranean holding cells are currently receiving minimal rations. What would you have them do for the time being? Would you prefer to force them into hard labor so they experience true hardship, or simply let them starve in darkness?"

"Labor sounds nice," April replied, her voice dropping into a cool, clinical tone. "If anything, I want them to work until they start wishing for death. It would be far more profitable than letting them rot idly."

Xavier nodded, a dark, approving glint flashing in his gaze. "I’ll see to it immediately."

As April shifted on the cushions, Xavier paused, looking down at her softly. "Do you need help getting up to your room?"

"No, thank you. We’ll be fine," April murmured, leaning her head back against the plush velvet. "I might just sleep here for the night. It’s comfortable on the couch anyway."

A rare, genuinely tender smile broke across Xavier’s sharp features. "All right, April. Good night."

"Good night, Xavier."
