Chapter 54: Chapter 54 Stranded Xi

Luna’s breath came in ragged gasps as she struggled to calm herself. The horrifying realization that she would have died if she had arrived even a minute later refused to leave her mind. Despite everything she had prepared for, despite all the plans she had carefully made before the apocalypse began, death still found countless ways to reach for her.

It was almost as though the apocalypse itself was mocking her, stripping away every advantage she thought she had and throwing one impossible disaster after another in her path. First the flood, then the mutated creatures, and now an earthquake. It felt determined to bury her by any means possible.

But she refused to die.

Her eyes immediately searched for Adrian and Kai, only to freeze when she spotted another massive crack stretching across the ground. The earthquake had split the earth open beneath them, creating a gaping abyss that seemed eager to swallow them whole.

Both men were barely hanging onto the crumbling edge while the mutated creatures that had dragged them there tumbled one after another into the endless darkness below. Even without the monsters, Adrian and Kai were still seconds away from sharing the same fate.

"Let’s help them! We can’t let them fall!"

She turned toward Ethan, hoping he would finally lend a hand.

Instead, she found him lying comfortably on the unaffected side of the ground with both hands behind his head, almost as though he were relaxing on a beach instead of standing in the middle of the apocalypse.

"Ethan! What is this? Have you finally lost your mind?"

She stared at him in disbelief.

Sometimes his ridiculous behavior genuinely infuriated her.

He didn’t even bother getting up.

"You think saving you means I’m suddenly on your team?" Ethan scoffed. "Nope. I only did it because it was you. Consider the debt repaid. We’re even now."

Luna clenched her fists so tightly her nails dug into her palms.

Her anger flared instantly, but this wasn’t the time to argue. Adrian and Kai were literally hanging over death, desperately clinging to the unstable edge as pieces of rock continued breaking away beneath their fingers.

The monsters were gone.

The danger wasn’t.

"Arghhhhh! How did I end up here?!"

Kai suddenly regained consciousness and immediately screamed at the top of his lungs after realizing where he was.

Of course.

Just what she needed.

If someone had told her a month ago that she’d spend the apocalypse risking her own life just to rescue a group of troublesome men, she would have slapped that person without hesitation.

Yet here she was...

Doing exactly that.

The irony almost made her laugh.

"Hang on!" she shouted. "Don’t let go! I’m going to get both of you out!"

As she tried reassuring them, her gaze shifted toward Adrian.

Something wasn’t right.

His entire body was trembling violently.

"Calm down, Adrian! You’re going to lose your grip!"

Standing on the opposite side of the crack, Luna’s heart pounded painfully inside her chest.

This wasn’t how Adrian usually behaved.

He wasn’t panicking.

He looked... terrified.

Adrian simply nodded with difficulty before squeezing his eyes shut. His fingers gripped the edge harder, but the loose soil beneath them continued crumbling, making every second more dangerous than the last.

"It seems..." Ethan muttered lazily from behind her.

"He’s afraid of heights."

Luna froze.

Only now did she truly notice it.

Adrian refused to look down.

He kept his eyes tightly closed, breathing faster and faster as though merely seeing the abyss would kill him before the fall ever could.

His fear wasn’t ordinary.

It was overwhelming him completely.

The dirt beneath his hands became increasingly slippery.

His grip weakened.

"We’re going to fall!" Kai cried desperately. "Please... save us!"

Luna’s thoughts raced wildly as she searched for a solution.

Then her eyes landed on Rowan.

He still hadn’t moved an inch.

A wave of fear crashed over her.

What if...

No.

No, don’t think like that.

She bit her lip hard.

I can do this.

Don’t let them die.

They’re your key to surviving this apocalypse.

Your mission is to help them become the SSS-Class survivors they were destined to be.

You can’t fail now.

Just as she desperately tried calming herself—

The earth shook again.

CRACK!!

The ground beneath Adrian and Kai shattered completely.

Their hands slipped.

"Luna!!"

She screamed so loudly that her voice echoed across the ruined landscape.

Then...

Ding.

A familiar mechanical chime echoed inside her head.

The system.

The one that had disappeared for an entire day.

A translucent screen materialized before her eyes.

[Welcome back, Host.]

[You have successfully restored our connection through your care and affection for your partners.]

[How touching—]

"Shut up!"

Luna actually screamed at it.

"They’re falling! Stop them! I don’t need your stupid commentary right now!"

The glowing panel instantly disappeared.

Without another word, a sleek floating vehicle materialized above the crack before shooting downward at incredible speed.

It vanished into the darkness beneath the earth.

Far below, where sunlight could no longer reach, the strange vehicle slowed as though gravity itself had weakened inside the abyss.

Moments later—

It caught both Adrian and Kai in midair.

"We’re alive!" Kai shouted in disbelief.

He grabbed Adrian’s shoulder.

"Breathe, dude! We’re okay!"

But Adrian wasn’t listening.

His breathing had become shallow and erratic.

"I... can’t..."

He clutched his chest tightly.

"I can’t breathe..."

"My lungs... they’re burning..."

His vision blurred.

His body felt unbearably light.

The vehicle’s side door slid open automatically before both men were pulled safely inside. Seatbelts immediately fastened around them as the door sealed shut.

Even then...

Adrian couldn’t calm down.

He curled himself into the corner of the cabin, hugging his knees while shaking uncontrollably.

Every tiny movement of the vehicle made him believe they were falling all over again.

Kai’s expression turned serious.

Something was wrong.

This wasn’t ordinary panic anymore.

"Please..." he pleaded toward the vehicle’s artificial intelligence.

"Take us back to Luna quickly."

"He’s getting worse."

The vehicle instantly accelerated.

The sudden burst of speed only made Adrian’s condition deteriorate further.

He leaned forward and vomited onto the floor.

Kai hurriedly moved aside.

"Ugh..."

The unpleasant smell quickly filled the enclosed cabin, but Kai barely noticed.

His attention remained fixed on Adrian, whose breathing continued growing weaker.

Within moments, the vehicle shot back out of the enormous crack before landing smoothly beside Luna.

The doors opened.

Adrian stumbled out first before collapsing onto his knees.

Luna immediately rushed over.

"Adrian!"

She grabbed his shoulders before gently patting his face.

His breathing was barely controlled.

His lips had turned pale.

Using the handkerchief she had stored inside her space, Luna carefully wiped the vomit from the corner of his mouth before quickly searching her memories for what to do.

She couldn’t waste another second.

Taking one deep breath, she leaned forward and pressed her lips against his.

Kai’s eyes widened so much they nearly popped out.

Adrian...

Just had his first kiss.

Even if...

It was only mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Luna ignored Kai’s shocked expression completely.

She focused solely on saving Adrian.

After giving him several breaths, she finally pulled away.

Adrian suddenly gasped.

"Cough!"

He bent forward violently, coughing several times before drawing in a proper breath.

Air finally filled his lungs again.

Only then did Luna let out the breath she had been holding.

They were finally safe.

While the rescue vehicle had gone after Adrian and Kai, she had already treated Rowan using the medical supplies stored inside her space. Fresh bandages now wrapped around Rowan’s head and neck after she had cleaned and dressed his injuries as best as she could.

"That was way too close..." Kai muttered, rubbing both hands over his face.

"We seriously almost died."

For the first time since everything began, genuine fear settled inside him.

This apocalypse wasn’t merely dangerous.

It was becoming completely unpredictable.

Luna slowly lifted her head toward Ethan.

He remained exactly where he had been before.

Watching.

Doing absolutely nothing.

Disappointment washed over her.

She was beginning to regret ever choosing him.

How could someone stand there and watch while the same people who had risked their lives to save him nearly died?

It made no sense.

"None of us are going to die," Luna declared firmly, her voice carrying far more conviction than before.

"I won’t let it happen."

Kai looked at her for several seconds.

He couldn’t tell whether it was a promise...

Or a vow she had made to herself.

Either way, he silently hoped she could keep it.

Nearby, Adrian lowered his gaze.

His ears had turned noticeably red.

"Thank you..." he said quietly.

"For saving me."

After a brief pause, he looked away.

"But... I don’t want to talk right now."

"Can I... be alone for a while?"

Luna studied him for a moment before nodding gently.

She understood.

Without forcing the conversation any further, she quietly stood up and walked back toward Rowan.

At the same time...

She finally prepared to have a long-overdue conversation with her mysteriously returned system.
