Chapter 72: Chapter 72 An alien?

BACK TO THE PRESENT

Luna chewed on a chocolate bar, casually munching on it while listening to Rowan’s narration. She had been eating different snacks these days, and at this point, it seemed like listening to everyone’s stories had become another part of her routine.

"And you feel bad, let me guess. You cried after your mother and sister drowned?"

Luna’s question was so blunt that Rowan stared at her. That wasn’t exactly the kind of thing someone should say to a person who had just finished talking about one of the most traumatizing moments of his life.

But Luna didn’t care. Why should she? She had been a victim too. When her parents had disowned her, had any of them apologized? No. Absolutely not. Of course, the woman who had raised her wasn’t even her biological mother. She was only her stepmother, but that didn’t make the betrayal hurt any less. Luna had left without giving them the satisfaction of watching her beg for mercy. She had been furious at the time.

And then there was the matter of her previous life. When she had been thrown into a horde of starving zombies, had anyone apologized? Again, no. So why was she supposed to offer sympathy simply because Rowan had lost people he considered family? They had all suffered different kinds of hell. Rowan’s pain wasn’t automatically more important than hers.

Rowan made a disappointed expression. He hadn’t expected Luna to react so passively to his story.

"Why wouldn’t I feel bad?" he asked. "They’re my blood. She’s my mother, and that was my sister. My only surviving relative. Was I supposed to just sit there and not cry?"

Luna finally dropped her phone and looked directly at him. At least Rowan could admit one thing. He had managed to accomplish something. He had gotten Luna to put down her novels and actually pay attention to him. The thought almost made him smile.

But Luna only scoffed. "So you shed tears for people who didn’t give a damn about you and actually wanted you to fail?"

Rowan’s expression tightened. "Tell me something. Why would your own son be desperately looking for a job while you sit there insulting him instead of supporting him? Was that witchcraft or something?"

Rowan sighed. He slowly stood up and began pacing. "It’s not like that."

"It looked like that."

"I understand where you’re coming from, but I..." He stopped. His voice became strained. "They fucking died." He grabbed onto a nearby pillar for support as his breathing became heavier. "All of them are gone now."

Luna said nothing.

"I was angry," Rowan continued. "I was hurt by the way she treated me. But I never actually wanted her to die. I would never wish that on her!"

Luna suddenly laughed. Rowan looked at her. "What?"

"Well, too bad they’re no longer alive to hear you say that." Her smile faded into something colder. "I’m sure they would’ve preferred to be alive while wishing you dead instead. So thank your lucky stars that you’re the one who survived."

Rowan’s face went blank. The words struck him harder than he expected. For a moment, he couldn’t respond. Luna wasn’t entirely wrong. Considering how things had been going, his mother might have driven him to the point of killing himself with all the pressure she had put on him.

But still... "That’s enough." Rowan’s voice was quiet. "Have some respect for the dead."

Luna rolled her eyes. "Respect?" She leaned back. "Why should I respect people who didn’t show you an ounce of respect while they were alive?"

Rowan frowned.

"The dead should remain dead. That’s all." Her words were harsh, but Luna genuinely didn’t understand why people suddenly became saints simply because they stopped breathing. If someone had spent their entire life hurting others, death didn’t magically erase everything they had done.

Rowan opened his mouth, but before he could answer, footsteps approached from the other side of the room. The others had finally finished dealing with the food—or whatever they could salvage from Kai’s disastrous cooking—and joined the conversation.

Ethan walked in first, rubbing his stomach with a disgusted expression. "What’s up, people?" He dropped himself onto the couch. "That shit was disgusting. Remind me never to eat anything made by Kai again."

Kai’s face immediately darkened.

Adrian, who was following behind Ethan, shrugged. "At least it kept you alive."

Ethan looked at him. "What?"

"Without that pudding, you wouldn’t have had anything to eat." Adrian glanced toward Kai. "Besides, someone decided to burn the food that would’ve actually been edible."

Ethan immediately fell silent. He slowly sat down. "Okay."

Adrian nodded. "Good."

Kai’s face brightened. "Thank you for defending my food, Adrian. I didn’t know you cared that much."

Adrian stared at him in confusion. "Me? Defend your food?" His expression turned disgusted. "Absolutely not. That thing was a complete disaster. Please don’t ever come near me with that sewer water again."

Kai’s face immediately turned red. He shifted backward, embarrassment spreading across his features. "That wasn’t necessary."

"It was."

Ethan snorted.

Kai glared at him. "You aren’t allowed to laugh."

"I wasn’t."

"You are literally laughing."

Ethan covered his mouth. "I’m choking."

"On what?"

"Nothing."

Adrian sighed.

The conversation quickly returned to Luna. "By the way, Luna," Ethan said, "you were saying something about wanting to address us. Can that happen now?"

From the kitchen came the distant sound of plates clattering. Miles was clearing away the mess the others had made at the dining table, apparently choosing to stay out of the conversation.

Luna looked at everyone. Rowan was standing beside the pillar, his head lowered slightly as he seemed lost in thought. Ethan, the silver-haired troublemaker, was sitting on the floor near the couch, leaning against its legs. Kai stood near the center of the room, about a meter from the staircase and close to the window. Adrian was the only one sitting directly beside Luna.

Her eyes returned to Rowan. She wondered if she had handled his story badly. Maybe she had. Luna wasn’t stupid. She knew he hadn’t been looking for criticism. He had wanted someone to listen. Someone he could confide in. And she had responded by practically insulting his dead family. That was just how she was. She wasn’t good at comforting people.

Before she could say anything, Kai suddenly coughed dramatically. "Hmm?" He cleared his throat. "Are we disturbing something?"

Everyone turned toward him. "Or should we give you two some privacy?"

Rowan immediately looked away from the pillar. When he did, he found Luna staring directly at him. Their eyes met. Rowan’s expression became confused. Why was she looking at him like that?

Luna ignored Kai’s ridiculous comment. "Rowan."

He straightened.

"You told me earlier that you think you were the one who caused the dimensional gate to open—the dungeon that allowed those monsters to appear."

Rowan nodded slowly.

"I don’t think that’s what happened."

Everyone became quiet.

Luna continued. "I think the disaster, along with the earthquake, caused a fissure."

Rowan’s brows furrowed. "A fissure?"

"Yes. Something must have broken through the barrier between the worlds." She shrugged. "That caused the dungeon to form. So stop blaming yourself."

Rowan stared at her. For several seconds, he couldn’t speak. The sudden empathy in her voice seemed to surprise him more than anything she had said earlier.

It wasn’t only Rowan who looked stunned. Kai, Ethan, and Adrian were staring at Luna as though she had suddenly grown another head.

Kai’s eyes narrowed. He had no idea if this was the second or third time Luna had acted completely differently from the person he knew. It was becoming concerning. Could an alien actually be inside her body? He had joked about it before. Now he was beginning to consider it seriously.

Luna looked around at their stunned expressions. "What?"

Nobody answered.

She frowned. "Why are you all staring at me?"

Ethan exchanged a look with Adrian.

Luna ignored them. "Look at the bright side, Rowan. You had an opportunity most people never got."

Rowan blinked.

"You awakened." She paused. "That gave you a chance to survive and live a better life than the people who didn’t." Her voice remained calm. "And none of what happened was your fault."

Rowan’s eyes softened.

"You didn’t cause the apocalypse. You didn’t create those monsters. You didn’t kill your family." She shrugged. "Terrible things happened. That’s all." Her voice turned sharp again. "And considering how badly they treated you, I hope they rot in hell."

Rowan’s eyes widened slightly.

Luna didn’t even hesitate. "And I’m not sorry for what I called that scumbag of a mother."

For the first time since Rowan had started talking about his past, his expression softened completely. He nodded. "Thank you."

Luna looked away. "Don’t make it a big deal."

But Kai was still staring at her. He wasn’t convinced. Not even remotely. He suddenly rushed forward. Before Luna could react, he grabbed her cheeks and jaw with both hands.

"You creature!"

Luna’s eyes widened. "What?"

"The thing that took Luna’s body!" Kai’s grip tightened. "Get out of her body right now!"

Everyone froze.

Luna stared at him. What the fuck is wrong with this psychotic dude?

Kai looked completely serious. "Don’t worry, Luna! I’m going to save you!"

Luna’s eye twitched. "Let go of my face."

"The real Luna is still in there!"

"Kai."

"Don’t worry! I’ll get rid of this creature!"

"Kai."

"Get out of that body now!"

"KAI!"

Luna slapped his hands away from her face. Kai stumbled backward.

Ethan immediately covered his face with both hands. Adrian did the same. Rowan lowered his head, desperately trying to hide his embarrassment on Kai’s behalf.

The room fell silent for a moment. Luna slowly turned toward Kai. Her expression was terrifying.

"If you touch my face like that again, I’m going to break your fingers."

Kai swallowed. "...The alien wouldn’t say something like that."

Luna’s eyebrow twitched. "You’re going to die."

Ethan burst out laughing. Adrian sighed. Rowan covered his face completely, still unable to hide from the shame.

And somewhere in the kitchen, Miles paused while holding a plate, wondering why the house had suddenly become so noisy.

Luna leaned back against the couch. She had only been trying to comfort Rowan. Somehow, she’d ended up being accused of being an alien. She looked toward the ceiling with annoyance.

"Why are the people around me so damn stupid?"
