Within seconds, every street connected to the square was filled.

The zombies that had resisted their instincts earlier were no longer restrained. They stared at the two living humans with ravenous eyes and fought one another to get closer.

Those trapped behind windows smashed through the remaining glass.

Others leaped from rooftops.

Their only desire was to tear open the two humans in the square and devour their flesh.

A wall of ice rose from the ground and sealed the nearest street.

"Take your time," he told Chu Miao. "I’ll keep them away from the fountain."

"Don’t kill all of them."

"I know why we came here."

"Just making sure. You recently advanced. You might become too enthusiastic."

"I have excellent self-control."

Chu Miao did not comment on that claim.

She turned toward the dried fountain and continued setting up her final array.

The earlier flags formed the outer sealing array. Once activated, it would cover most of central City K.

The second array would protect the fountain during the beginning of her breakthrough.

She could not rely on it for the entire tribulation. No array could withstand endless heavenly lightning without eventually shattering.

However, it could reduce the force of the first few strikes and give her body time to adjust.

Behind her, Ye Xuan created three more ice walls.

Each sealed one of the roads leading into the square.

The zombies did not stop.

They clawed at the ice, struck it with their bodies, and climbed over one another.

A few evolved zombies with strength-based abilities forced their way to the front.

One pulled back its fist and punched the wall.

The second punch widened them.

Before it could deliver a third, a thin bolt of lightning passed through the ice and struck its forehead.

The zombie dropped.

Its crystal core flew out of its head and landed in Ye Xuan’s hand.

"Level six," he said after glancing at it.

The zombie on the hotel roof watched everything without moving.

Other intelligent zombies had appeared on surrounding rooftops, but none entered the square.

There were more than thirty of them.

Most looked almost human. They wore clean clothing and showed none of the impatience affecting the lower-level zombies.

They were allowing the ordinary zombies to test Ye Xuan’s strength.

"They’re keeping their distance," he said.

Chu Miao inserted an array flag into the edge of the fountain.

"They know about the tribulation."

"That’s what I was thinking."

The strong zombies in City S had escaped before Ye Xuan released his cultivation.

Some of them might have reached City K and warned the commanders here.

That would explain why the zombies had hidden inside the buildings instead of gathering openly.

It would also explain why the intelligent ones stayed far from Chu Miao.

They did not want to be caught within the range of her tribulation.

"They prepared this place for us," Ye Xuan said.

The zombie on the hotel roof appeared to understand him.

Its stiff expression changed slightly.

Not quite a smile, but close enough.

The ground beneath the square suddenly trembled.

"Move!"

The dried fountain exploded.

Concrete and metal fragments shot into the air as a huge figure burst from beneath it.

It was a zombie.

However, its body was so bloated that it resembled a ball of rotten flesh.

Its arms were unusually long, ending in thick claws. Several metal chains were wrapped around its waist, as though it had been restrained underground.

When it opened its mouth, black liquid sprayed from its throat.

The liquid landed where Chu Miao had been standing a moment earlier.

The concrete immediately began to melt.

"Poison," Ye Xuan said.

Chu Miao landed several meters away.

She looked at the destroyed fountain, then at the zombie that had taken its place.

"My array flags were there."

"I’ll get them back."

Ye Xuan created an ice spear and threw it.

The spear pierced the bloated zombie’s shoulder and carried it backward.

But before its body could hit the ground, the intelligent zombie on the roof released a sharp roar.

The bloated zombie grabbed the ice spear and pulled it out.

Black blood poured from the wound.

Its flesh began closing almost immediately.

"Level nine," Chu Miao said.

"Recently advanced."

The zombie was powerful, but the energy in its body was unstable.

It had probably been forced to advance with large amounts of crystal cores.

The intelligent zombies did not care whether its foundation was damaged. They only needed a weapon strong enough to interrupt Chu Miao’s breakthrough.

The ground trembled again.

This time, cracks spread across the entire square.

More zombies climbed from underground.

It was a good plan.

"Can you still set up the array?" Ye Xuan asked.

"Of course."

She extended her hand.

The array flags buried beneath the broken fountain flew through the rubble and returned to her.

Only two were damaged.

Chu Miao replaced them before turning toward the largest building beside the square.

The roof was wide and flat.

It was not as open as the fountain, but that no longer mattered.

"The hotel roof will do."

The speaking zombie was still standing there.

It looked at her, then at the array flags floating around her.
