Apocalypse Transmigration - The Card Captor System
Chapter 141: Desperate situationChaos consumed the battlefield. The brief advantage the humans held evaporated as strange figures emerged from the endless zombie horde. One-horned aliens. First dozens, then hundreds. They had been hiding among the undead all along, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Now, they descended upon the military forces from every direction.
"RAAAAGH!"
Metallic claws tore through soldiers and armor alike. Blood sprayed across the dirt as the military’s defensive line collapsed. Soldiers fought back with swords and spears, but their weapons failed to pierce the aliens’ thick hides.
CLANG!
A spear bounced harmlessly off an alien’s chest. Before the soldier could blink, a metallic claw swept across his body.
SPLAT!
The blow threw the man backward. The military was losing ground. The tide of the battle had shifted, the two-horned demon’s forces finally revealing their true strength.
High above the carnage, the enormous eyeball alien floated before Adrian. Hundreds of pupils locked onto the old soldier.
"You think you are strong?"
Its voice carried a strange vibration.
"Your so-called superhuman ability is nothing more than power amplified by that equipment."
Its pupils contracted.
"Let’s see how you fare when I crush your precious machinery."
A strange, heavy force pressed into the air. Adrian’s eyes narrowed. The same invisible power that had destroyed Nina’s mech descended upon him. The metal bracers around his arms creaked, and the cables connected to his equipment trembled.
But nothing else happened.
The giant eyeball’s pupils widened.
"What?"
Adrian raised his head, a faint smile touching his weathered face.
"You may be powerful."
"But it seems you don’t understand science very well."
The alien’s pupils shifted uneasily. Adrian lifted a metallic fist. Electricity crackled around his fingers.
"We’ve already studied your abilities."
"Your telekinetic powers aren’t magic."
"They operate through waves and frequencies."
The electricity wrapping around his body intensified.
"And do you know what happens when electricity flows?"
"A magnetic field is generated."
The strange telekinetic force around Adrian distorted. The metal bracers on his arms let out a steady hum.
"Your abilities are being disrupted by the electromagnetic field surrounding me."
Adrian clenched his fist.
"This is exactly why I was sent here."
He stared directly at the enormous eye.
"To deal with creatures like you."
Electricity exploded from his suit.
"Now..."
"Let’s see how well you fare."
On another part of the battlefield, radiant light bathed Cyrus’s body. His feet vanished from the dirt.
WHOOSH!
In a flash, he stood beside Ars, his glowing fist shooting toward the demon’s head. But before the blow could connect—
BOOM!
A curtain of black blood erupted between them. Cyrus’s fist slammed into the barrier, sending tremors through the wall of fluid. Ars stood on the other side, wearing a mocking smile.
"What happened?"
"You seem distracted."
Cyrus’s eyes narrowed. Ars tilted his head.
"If you don’t give me your full attention..."
The black blood swirled around his body.
"...forget defeating me."
His smile widened.
"You might end up getting yourself killed."
Cyrus’s expression turned cold.
"Then I’ll just have to kill you quickly."
Blinding light erupted from his form.
Elsewhere, Grandpa Jiro was locked in a fierce battle. Two one-horned aliens circled him. Their metallic claws had been replaced by long, curved blades.
CLANG!
Grandpa Jiro’s katana collided with one of their swords.
CLANG!
The second blade swept in from the opposite direction. Jiro twisted his body, letting the steel pass mere inches away. The two aliens exchanged a glance.
"Swordsman..."
"We’ve killed countless human swordsmen."
"Yet you..."
One of them tightened his grip.
"...are clearly different."
The second alien stepped forward.
"We’ll get serious now."
Grandpa Jiro’s eyes sharpened. He lowered his stance.
"Good."
"I was getting bored."
Not far away, Valentine carved through the encircling aliens.
SHING!
A head flew through the air. She spun.
SHING!
Another body collapsed. But the horde was endless. For every alien she killed, two more took its place. Valentine’s breathing grew heavy. Her blades still moved with frightening speed, but the endless stream of enemies was wearing her down.
"How many of these things are there?"
She glanced across the battlefield. The situation was deteriorating everywhere. Cyrus was trapped fighting Ars. Grandpa Jiro was occupied by two powerful opponents. Adrian was locked in battle with the giant eyeball.
And then, Valentine’s gaze caught something else.
Aldina.
Her expression dropped. Aldina was running, clutching an unconscious Nina in her arms.
Screams, explosions, and monster roars echoed behind her. Aldina had to get Nina to safety, but the horde blocked every path. She searched the battlefield. In the distance, Atlas was rampaging through the Brutes. The golden ape tore through another monster, sending its massive body flying.
Aldina hesitated. Could she rely on him?
She dismissed the thought.
"No..."
"Once Atlas transforms, he doesn’t recognize friend or foe."
"If I approach him..."
She glanced at Nina.
"He might attack us too."
That would only guarantee their deaths. Aldina gritted her teeth.
"There’s no choice."
She raised both hands.
"Freezing World!"
BOOOOOOM!
An overwhelming wave of frost erupted from her body. The surrounding zombies froze in place. Ice coated the ground, climbing over the monsters until an entire section of the horde stood as frozen statues. Aldina sprinted forward. But the attack’s range wasn’t large enough to clear the entire path.
She halted.
"Freezing World!"
Another wave of frost erupted, locking more zombies in ice. She pushed forward again.
Then—
"Freezing World!"
The third wave washed out. This time, Aldina staggered. Her breathing turned ragged, a sharp ache radiating through her body. She had pushed her limit too far. She looked down at Nina.
"Just a little farther..."
A terrifying sense of danger spiked inside her mind. Aldina’s pupils contracted. She threw herself backward.
BOOOOOOM!
The ice wall where she had just been standing shattered into a thousand pieces. A gigantic jaw burst through the frozen debris, rows of razor-sharp teeth snapping shut on empty air. Aldina paled.
"The two-headed wolf..."
The monster hauled itself from the shattered ice. Both enormous heads snarled in unison. Aldina threw her hand forward, willing ice to form around the creature’s legs.
"Freeze!"
The wolf locked in place, its lower half encased in a thick block of frost. Aldina pivoted on her heel, desperate to put distance between them.
But a massive shadow loomed over her.
WHOOSH!
A gigantic tail swept through the air. Her danger sense screamed. She twisted around just in time to conjure an ice barrier.
BOOOOOOM!
The heavy tail smashed into the wall. The ice shattered on impact, blowing right through her defenses.
"Agh!"
The force launched Aldina through the air like a rag doll. Blood sprayed from her lips, and Nina tumbled from her grip. Aldina crashed hard into the dirt.
THUD!
She gasped for air, her vision blurring.
"Nina..."
The two-headed wolf ignored the ice user. Its orders were absolute: kill the girl. The block surrounding its legs began cracking.
CRACK.
CRACK.
SHATTER!
The beast broke free and charged straight at Nina. Aldina’s vision cleared just enough to see the impending strike. Her eyes went wide.
"No..."
She fought to stand, but her legs trembled beneath her. She couldn’t reach them in time. The wolf opened its massive jaws.
Then, a realization hit her. The ground beneath the monster was still coated in the thick ice she had created moments earlier. An idea flared in her mind. Pushing past the pain, she raised both trembling hands.
"Not yet..."
"I won’t let you..."
Her eyes hardened with resolve.
"Frozen Thorns!"
BOOOOOOM!
The frozen earth beneath the beast exploded. Massive ice spikes erupted from below.
SHING! SHING! SHING!
One spike pierced the creature’s leg. Another tore through its abdomen, followed by a third, and a fourth. Within seconds, dozens of jagged, enormous ice pillars completely impaled the two-headed wolf, pinning the monster helplessly to the ground.
Aldina collapsed. The last ounce of strength drained from her body. She lay in the dirt for several seconds, teetering on the edge of consciousness. She shifted her gaze toward Nina. The girl remained unconscious, but she was alive. Aldina’s lips curled into a weak smile.
"Good..."
She had saved her.
BOOM.
The ground trembled beneath her. Aldina’s smile faded. Another vibration shook the battlefield.
BOOM.
The rhythmic thud of massive footsteps drew closer. Aldina turned her head. Through the hazy smoke, she saw them. The Brute army had finally arrived. Dozens of towering, muscle-bound monsters marched forward, every step shaking the earth.
Aldina’s fingers twitched. She had nothing left to give. She couldn’t cast Freezing World again. She couldn’t even stand. She looked from Nina to the approaching tide of monsters. A single, hollow thought entered her exhausted mind.
Is this it...?
Across the battlefield, Valentine spotted the approaching Brutes. Panic flashed in her eyes. She knew Aldina’s condition better than anyone—she had personally trained her. She knew exactly how much energy her student had left.
"She’s at her limit..."
Valentine tightened the grip on her twin blades. She looked at the horde surrounding her, then at Nina and Aldina. Her eyes turned ice-cold.
"It seems..."
She raised her swords, taking a deep breath.
"...I can’t hold back anymore."
She prepared to carve her way through the encirclement.
Then, Valentine’s eyes widened.
"What..."
A shadow materialized between Aldina and Nina. There was no warning. No sound. No rushing wind. One second, the space was empty. The next, a black-hooded figure stood in the dirt.
The long robe fluttered gently in the ash-filled wind, the heavy fabric concealing his face. Aldina’s blurred vision tried to focus on the silhouette. Valentine stopped in her tracks. Across the warzone, Cyrus turned his head. Grandpa Jiro’s eyes narrowed. Even the giant eyeball above shifted its hundreds of pupils toward the newcomer.
The robed figure lifted a single hand. A faint, pooling darkness gathered in his palm, and the ambient light of the battlefield seemed to dim in response. The chaotic air went deathly silent. The stranger looked toward the towering army of Brutes.
His voice was calm. Cold.
"Voidfall."
