William roared, biting into the ragged cloth of Lily’s shirt in a desperate attempt to pull her back. But he was too late. The bullet struck.
Lily’s form dissolved into ash, and the destructive force carried over to William. The part of his face pressed against her back melted away. Half of his head, including his third eye, vanished into thin air.
He staggered backward. Despite the massive trauma and losing half his brain, his body refused to give up. Stripped of conscious thought, raw survival instinct took over. His broken body turned and started to flee.
Leo readied himself to give chase.
Then, a raw scream pierced the air.
"No, Linda!"
It was Danny. Leo froze in his tracks.
A memory from his time in the Void dimension flashed through his mind. He and the Astral Master were resting after a training session.
Leo asked, "Hey, is Gill gone to fight whoever you guys are always fighting with?"
The Astral Master smiled. "Why, you want to go and fight too?"
Leo didn’t reply, but his eager expression gave him away.
The Astral Master shook his head. "I would advice against doing that. The way you are now, one look from any of them and your soul will perish."
Leo widened his eyes. "Those guys are that strong?" Then he added, "You must be a noble person if you are staying here and fighting guys that strong. Surely, you must be doing it to protect something."
Hearing this, the Astral Master chuckled. "Noble, huh?"
He shook his head, a melancholic shadow crossing his face. "I am many things but noble is not one of them. I am the most selfish, my hands are filled with sin. You can’t imagine the lengths I have gone through to get what I want."
He met Leo’s gaze. "You know I can leave here anytime I want to. I found the way to leave a long time ago."
"At the begining when i was trapped here at first .The only thing I could think about was escaping this place as quickly as possible."
"But you know sometimes once you are just a tiny bit away from the goal you have been chasing after for so long. Then a moment comes when you will realise that if you run after that goal and don’t care about the other stuff then that moment would always haunt you for the rest of your life."
"Leave it, you won’t understand. If you live long enough then I think you would also come across such a situation."
The Astral Master’s warning echoed in his ears. Gritting his teeth, Leo turned his back on the fleeing enemy to see what had happened to Danny.
His head is already half blown off, Leo reasoned to himself. Him running away is just his body’s mechanism using the last fumes of his life. I will take care of what happened and come to retrieve his body then.
With his choice made, Leo activated Void Walk. He vanished, reappearing closer to where their truck had crashed.
A few minutes earlier, just as Leo leaped out to chase William, a calm had settled over the truck.
The weapons systems lay dormant. Grandpa Jiro leaned out the open passenger door to keep watch while Danny manned the driver’s seat. In the back compartment, Linda tended to the two unconscious women.
Lily still wore the heavy tactical helmet. Without the weapons firing and nothing left to do, she grew incredibly bored. Her wide eyes stayed glued to the glowing virtual screen. Two specific icons flashing on the side panel kept drawing her attention: a miniature cannon and a crosshair.
Unable to resist the temptation, she reached out and tapped both icons.
The truck’s AI flared to life, its mechanical voice echoing through the cabin.
[Highest threat detection activated]
[Aether Railgun activated]
Danny flinched in the front seat. "Lily what did you do again?"
Hearing the commotion, Linda poked her head out from the back to see what was wrong.
On the virtual screen in front of Lily, a radar map bloomed into existence.
[Highest threat Value detected]
[Locking on target]
[Target selected for elimination]
[Charging the Aether Railgun]
Heavy metal ground against metal as a massive, twin-barreled cannon breached the roof of the vehicle. Plated in dark alloy with glowing energy coils running along its long magnetic rails, the high-tech weapon locked into place. The screen highlighted its target: the blood Altar, pulsing in an angry, deep red. Sparks danced around the muzzle of the railgun, twisting together to form a dense ball of crackling energy.
[Aether Railgun Charged]
[Firing at the target in 5 seconds]
[5, 4, 3, 2, 1]
[Launching attack]
A blinding beam erupted from the barrel, tearing through the air and crashing straight into the blood Altar.
Boom!
A massive shockwave ripped through the battlefield as the altar blew apart. Zeltan, locked in a fierce struggle against Valentine, paused in sheer disbelief at the unprovoked blast.
He spun toward the roaring flames of the destroyed structure.
"No..."
Abandoning his fight, he launched himself toward the ruined Altar.
Valentine seized the opening. A streak of thunder surged through the air, aimed directly at Zeltan’s exposed back.
Danger flared in Zeltan’s mind a split second before impact.
"You damn woman!"
He snatched another amulet from his belt and crushed it in his palm. A barrier flared around him, taking the brunt of the blast and scattering the lightning into sparks.
Zeltan scrambled toward the Blood Altar. Cracks ran across the heavy stone, but to his relief, the structure was still working. The weird eyeball creature was gone, completely absorbed by Ars. Only Oshu remained, thrashing against the thick chains binding him to the altar. He was putting up a fight, but Zeltan knew he wouldn’t hold out much longer.
Before he could celebrate, a dread so heavy it made his skin crawl crept up from behind.
