The atmosphere in the reception hall was silent for a moment.

Faye Webb suddenly slid off the sofa and knelt on the floor.

She didn’t sob or kowtow endlessly. She just knelt there, straight-backed and silent, a stubborn look on her face.

Paige Summers watched her without speaking.

A long time passed. So long that Faye Webb’s knees began to ache and the expression on her face was about to crumble, yet Paige Summers just continued to watch her quietly.

A flash of humiliation crossed Faye Webb’s eyes. She had no choice but to break the silence.

"Please, take me in!"

After a moment, Paige Summers chuckled. "And who are you?"

As she said this, she had actually already remembered.

Marcus Monroe had mentioned it to her before. When he was in Southreach, he went to see the old master of the Woods Family, only to find the man had already passed away. Instead, a granddaughter had disguised herself, trying to deceive him. But he saw right through her, gained the upper hand, and used her. Marcus had been quite proud of his sharp eye and had added a comment: the Woods Family was too stupid.

But he hadn’t mentioned the granddaughter’s name, so it was only now that she realized. ’Faye Webb... that must be her.’

Sure enough, the woman quickly said, "I am Faye Webb. A while ago, Lord Monroe ran into some trouble while on business in Southreach..."

She began to tell her story. As Paige Summers listened, the general events seemed correct, but there were some slight distortions.

For example, in her version, it wasn’t Marcus Monroe who tricked her, but rather she who actively offered to help, and Marcus had even promised to protect her after the matter was settled... and so on and so forth. In short, though she never said it outright, every sentence was designed to lead the listener’s imagination astray, to make them speculate that her relationship with Marcus was one of mutual, romantic affection.

When she finished, Paige Summers couldn’t help but laugh.

’And here I thought she had some clever trick up her sleeve. This is it?’

It suddenly felt utterly dull.

She stood up. "I’ve heard your story. I’m sorry, but I refuse your request."

Faye Webb was stunned.

’How... is this completely different from what I imagined?’

She thought the other woman would get angry, furious, maybe even violent.

And that was exactly what she wanted.

But there was nothing. Absolutely nothing.

It was like tossing a stone into water without causing a single ripple.

Faye Webb gritted her teeth. Seeing Paige Summers walk toward the door, clearly intending to leave without any further entanglement, she couldn’t care about anything else and lunged forward... No, she didn’t want to assassinate her; she just wanted to grab her leg and beg...

Unfortunately, Paige Summers completely misunderstood her intentions.

When she was still over a meter away, a Short Sword was pressed against Faye Webb’s chest, stopping her before she could lunge. The Short Sword was extremely sharp. If she moved any further forward, it would undoubtedly pierce her body.

With a sudden change of thought, Faye Webb took a small step forward.

Soon, blood flowed from her chest, soaking her clothes.

She cried out, "Why are you trying to kill me? Is this my fault? I..."

Paige Summers tilted her head and looked at her, amused. She guessed why she was doing this.

Because in the next moment, Marcus Monroe pushed the door open and walked in.

Paige Summers did not lower the Short Sword in her hand, and Faye Webb’s blood continued to flow.

After entering, Marcus Monroe said nothing and simply kicked Faye Webb, who had shot him a "surprised" look. Her body flew through the air, slammed into the wall, and then slumped to the ground, unconscious.

"Are you okay?" Marcus Monroe asked Paige Summers.

Paige Summers shook her head and sheathed her Short Sword.

"This woman is very strange."

Marcus Monroe grunted. "I’ll have someone interrogate her and get to the bottom of it. Don’t worry about it. I’ll take you back to rest."

Paige Summers glanced at him with a light laugh. "What makes you think I’d be comfortable with you interrogating her?"

Marcus Monroe looked at her and suddenly laughed too.

"Are you jealous?"

Paige Summers answered frankly, "Not much, but a little." After a thought, she added, "She’s very pretty. Where I used to live, it was a world that judged by looks, to some extent. Hmm, someone like her would have no problem becoming a female celebrity."

Marcus Monroe chuckled.

"Then that’s her loss. Born at the wrong time."

The two looked at each other and smiled.

As Marcus Monroe left with his arm around Paige Summers, he said to the team members outside, "Take her away and interrogate her thoroughly. Make sure you find out who sent her!"

With Marcus Monroe accompanying her, Wendy Lowell tactfully took her leave first.

Paige Summers tilted her head and asked, "Aren’t you going to training?"

Marcus Monroe said meaningfully, "Not today. I’ve given them an assignment. They should be done in time for dinner."

Paige Summers burst out laughing. After a moment, she asked, "Is that woman really the Woods Family’s granddaughter?"

"It’s her."

Marcus Monroe had kept his promise back then. After Maisie Joyce gained the upper hand in the election and the city lockdown was partially lifted, he sent men to escort her out of the city.

It wasn’t difficult.

Faye Webb’s superpower was very useful for that.

Marcus Monroe had his men take her to a small base closest to Southreach before they left.

All things considered, he felt he had done more than enough.

He never expected she would show up at his door trying to bite the hand that fed her.

Paige Summers thought for a moment and said, "Don’t let her die. Since she delivered herself to our doorstep, we might as well make use of her. Over in Southreach, Maisie Joyce doesn’t have complete control yet. Since Lucian is involved, we can give him a little help. What do you think?"

Marcus Monroe nodded. "Good idea. After the interrogation, I’ll have someone send her over."

They both thought it was just a minor issue.

And didn’t give it much thought.

The result, however, was beyond their expectations.

「In the afternoon」

Marcus Monroe was resting with Paige Summers when a team member suddenly reported that Faye Webb had escaped. She hadn’t escaped alone; the two team members sent to interrogate her had gone crazy for some reason and run off with her...

Marcus Monroe and Paige Summers were shocked.

Upon investigation, they learned that Faye Webb had used her superpower again, transforming into the appearance of a team member from the base. They had even forged an order to leave the base.

By the time the guards at the gate realized something was wrong, they only managed to injure them but couldn’t bring them back.

But no one could figure out why those two team members had suddenly defected!

Marcus Monroe was furious, but not to the point of losing his reason.

Both of them were veteran members who had been with him for a long time. They had always been loyal. It was impossible for them to be bewitched by Faye Webb in such a short time.

Mason Hayes was deeply guilty, gritting his teeth and vowing to capture them.

Marcus Monroe pondered for a moment before saying, "This is very strange. The most likely possibility is that Faye Webb also has a Spiritual Ability and used it to control them during the interrogation."

Paige Summers nodded. "I was thinking the same thing."

Mason Hayes agreed. "A squad has already been sent in pursuit. They shouldn’t be able to escape."

Later, when Paige Summers was alone with Marcus Monroe, she said with no small amount of vexation, "This is our fault, too. We underestimated Faye Webb."

"Yeah."

Marcus Monroe’s expression was grim.

The squad pursuing Faye Webb and the others returned at night. They had all suffered injuries of varying severity, but they hadn’t captured Faye Webb or the two team members.

The squad leader, Julian Logan, was deeply ashamed.

Mason Hayes’s order at the time was to capture them alive if possible, but if not, to eliminate them. But he was so focused on taking them alive to find out what had happened that, in the end...

"At the time, all three of them had been shot in the leg with arrows. We were about to capture them when a dozen or so masked people suddenly appeared and snatched them away."

"Masked people?" Paige Summers’s heart skipped a beat. "What kind of masked people?"

Julian Logan recalled carefully. "They were all dressed in black, with cloth hoods over their faces that only showed their eyes. They weren’t very tall, and their superpowers were bizarre. Several of them could move through the earth as if swimming, and they specialized in surprise attacks from below. We were caught off guard, and they succeeded."

Marcus Monroe was silent for a moment, then signaled for Mason Hayes to take them away.

Get treated first, then face punishment.

"From what Julian Logan said, these people don’t seem to be the Eldorians from last time," Paige Summers said slowly.

Marcus Monroe let out a frustrated breath. "Yeah. It seems their original target wasn’t you or me."

The enemy came prepared. What they wanted must have been an insider from Bloodfall Base.

So, from the very beginning, this was a trap!

Paige Summers understood this as well. "They must be after the food."

The main things they sold to outsiders were just food and weapons.

There wasn’t much to find out about the weapons.

Only the food.

The other party definitely wanted to figure out how they were producing so much high-quality food.

She hugged Marcus Monroe. "Don’t be angry. These things are impossible to guard against completely. We’ll just have to counter their moves as they come. Those people are definitely not from any respectable group, or they wouldn’t resort to such underhanded tactics. If that’s the case, they can’t be that powerful. We’ll send people to investigate first. We might get news soon."

Half of these words were meant to comfort him, and half were serious.

Marcus Monroe also had a rough idea of the situation.

The enemy probably wasn’t from a nearby base. As for who they were, that would require a thorough investigation!

"It’s too late. You should get some sleep."

He took Paige Summers’s hand, unwilling to let her worry any further.

Regarding this matter, he wasn’t most angry at the enemy, but at himself.

The scout teams were quickly dispatched.

At the same time, the training intensity for the base’s team members was increased.

It wasn’t just superpower and physical training, but also willpower training.

Marcus Monroe had come to a profound realization of his team’s deficiency in this area.

Spiritual Abilities were nearly impossible to guard against, but they weren’t without weaknesses. As long as the target’s willpower was strong enough, they wouldn’t necessarily be at the mercy of the user.

Clearly, the base’s team members were still severely lacking!

Because the area to be scouted was quite large, the scout teams would be delayed for at least two days.

Just then, Lucian sent someone back.

Paige Summers looked at the messenger in disbelief and said, "You’re saying the Base Chief says he’s going to marry Maisie Joyce?"

"Yes, that’s what he said. He also said that these are extraordinary times, so forget about a wedding and all that. It’s enough that you know. Once things in Southreach have stabilized a bit more, he’ll bring people back, and everyone can celebrate then."

The corner of Marcus Monroe’s mouth twitched.

’Should I be praising him?’

’What an impressive feat!’

Paige Summers frowned and dismissed the messenger. She turned her head and said, "Don’t tell me the lesson May Joyce taught him wasn’t enough. He wants to try a political marriage?"
