Long after, Paige Summers would never forget that day.

It was the night of the sixth day after Marcus Monroe had left. The sky was relatively clear; though the moon was dim, its sparse light still shone upon the ground, spilling onto the walls of Bloodfall Base.

With Marcus Monroe gone and the base short a hundred elite members, the team, under Mason Hayes’s leadership, had become acutely aware of their immense responsibility over the past few days. Every one of them was on high alert. The more lively ones, those closer to Paige Summers, even made a point to run over and comfort her, vowing that even though Captain Monroe was away, they would protect her no matter what!

It truly left Paige Summers at a loss for words.

Beyond finding it amusing, she felt a warmth in her heart.

Everyone had long known that someone had designs on Bloodfall Base.

Last time, Faye Webb had escaped with two others from the base, and they were never caught. Back then, everyone knew what that implied.

However, no one had expected the enemy to be so brazen as to attack them at their very gates!

That evening, the people in the base had just finished dinner and the guards at the gate had just changed shifts when they heard a series of roars from not far outside.

The sound was exceedingly strange.

It didn’t sound like a Mutant Beast, nor did it sound like a Zombie.

It wasn’t very loud, but it was long and sharp, piercing enough to make one’s ears ache.

The team members’ hearts jumped. They scrambled to their posts, bracing for an attack.

But before they could even see where the shrieks were coming from, the enemy shot toward the base gate like a cannonball.

A loud "BANG" shook everyone to the core.

Only then did they see the strange figure that had appeared outside the base.

Its form was human, but it wasn’t wearing the standard combat fatigues. Instead, it was draped in a large, robe-like garment. Its hair was a frizzy mess, as if it had just been struck by lightning, piled on its head and obscuring most of its face.

The small patch of skin it did show glowed a ghastly green, a particularly terrifying sight in the dead of night.

"Is that a Zombie Leader?!"

"I don’t care what it is! On my command! Crossbow Arrows, fire!"

"Yes, sir!"

Amidst the team’s shouts of acknowledgment, volley after volley of Crossbow Arrows shot forth!

However, not only was the monster’s strength in ramming the gate astonishing, but its speed was also incredible. It dodged and weaved, remaining completely unscathed despite the high-density barrage.

The missed Crossbow Arrows still carried momentum, but they only buried themselves uselessly in the ground!

The "BANG, BANG" of the impacts continued relentlessly.

The monster slammed against the base gate with all its might, letting out triumphant "Heh, heh" sounds.

Some of the team members on the wall were furious, but their captain was quite level-headed. Seeing that the Crossbow Arrow attack was ineffective, he immediately called a halt and switched to using superpowers.

Superpower attacks had a wider range and greater destructive force than Crossbow Arrows.

However, as if inspired by them, the monster also unleashed a superpower—and it was far more terrifying than theirs!

Beams of black light shot toward the city wall.

At first, the team members didn’t think much of it. Some dodged, while others who couldn’t get fully out of the way were grazed by the beams.

They quickly discovered just how deadly it was.

The team members who had been grazed by the black beams started showing symptoms within dozens of seconds. They collapsed to the ground, convulsing, and in a short while, their entire bodies turned a carbon-black as if they had been scorched. Then, they stopped breathing!

A team member who understood what was happening immediately shouted, "This is bad! It’s a Poison Ability! Everyone be careful, don’t let it touch you!"

By this time, Mason Hayes had already arrived at the base gate with his men.

And Paige Summers was on her way.

Although she was nearly six months pregnant, she was still quite agile. Plus, having rested well during the day, she showed no signs of fatigue as she hurried toward the gate with the team member who had come to report.

She questioned him about the details of the situation as they went.

"The enemy is fast? How fast, exactly?"

"Slower than you used to be, but... probably on par with a Seventh or Eighth Rank Speed Superpower User."

"Any other superpowers?"

"I didn’t see any before I came to get you, but its strength is incredible. When it was hitting the gate, I felt like the ground beneath my feet was shaking."

"Are you sure there’s only one?"

"So far, yes."

Paige Summers nodded and said no more.

Although she was somewhat surprised that someone would so brazenly attack Bloodfall, it wasn’t enough to make her panic.

Faced with her calm demeanor, the team member’s own anxiety began to settle.

They soon arrived on the city wall.

Mason Hayes, who had been observing the monster, strode over.

"Vice Chief!"

Paige Summers gave a slight nod. "Status?" As she spoke, her eyes swept over the surroundings, not missing the few corpses on the ground. Her heart instantly grew cold.

Mason Hayes said grimly, "Killing it is proving to be tricky. Its superpower is bizarre—touch it and you die. But don’t worry, the gate won’t be breached."

As Paige Summers listened, she was already walking toward the parapet.

Mason Hayes tried to stop her, but she waved him off.

Her eyesight was good enough to see the monster outside dodging the attacks.

Just then, a Flame from a Fire Ability User licked toward it. The bright flare of the fire was gone in a flash, but Paige Summers didn’t miss the moment of clarity it provided.

The half-a-face it revealed was enough for her to recognize the attacker.

Paige Summers’s gaze hardened. "May... Joyce..." she said, enunciating each word.

As if hearing her voice, the monster’s feet faltered for a split second. It was immediately struck by a jet of Flame, and its clothes caught fire.

It retreated some distance, then quickly dropped to the ground and began to roll.

A moment later, the fire was out.

But the robe it wore was even more tattered, torn on its arms and legs to the point where its green skin was visible. Beneath the skin were not distinct bones, but rather slightly bulging muscles, as if testifying to its strength!

The monster howled in fury!

As it screamed, it swung its arm toward the city wall!

With lightning-fast reflexes, Paige Summers flipped up her Crossbow and shot the object it had thrown out of the air.

An explosion "BOOMED" right before their eyes. A searing wave of air and sparks scattered in all directions. Paige Summers took several steps back, barely managing to avoid it, but could still feel the heat on her cheek.

"It has bombs!"

Paige Summers glanced at the monster, which was once again ramming the base gate as if it had no regard for its own life. She turned to Mason Hayes and said, "Take it down, no matter the cost!"

Mason Hayes nodded in solemn agreement, then immediately commanded, "First and Second squads, with me! We’re heading out to engage!"

At this point, it no longer mattered if this monster was May Joyce or not. What mattered was that it was a powerful enemy! And the best way to deal with an enemy like this was to eradicate it completely!

Just as Mason Hayes was leading his men out from a side gate, another team member on the wall urgently reported to Paige Summers, "Vice Chief! There’s a fire over there! Judging by the direction, it must be the planting base!"
