As he rallied his men to head for Stoneridge Base, Marcus Monroe also dispatched several small teams in different directions to conduct a thorough search. Paige Summers’s belly was already quite large; it was an obvious detail. Whoever had taken her from the base couldn’t have left without a single clue!
Meanwhile, Paige Summers—the woman everyone at Bloodfall Base was worried about and searching for—was hidden away in an ordinary house in Southreach.
It was a detached house with its own courtyard, and the security was formidable. In other words, in her current condition, she couldn’t even dream of escaping.
Paige Summers sat on a recliner inside, her hand gently stroking her belly, her expression calm.
She was now calm and composed enough to assess her situation.
’It meant that if she wanted to keep her baby, she had to behave.’
Thankfully, her initial fury had passed.
That rage had peaked when she first awoke to find herself in a moving vehicle.
A thick quilt lay spread over the wooden planks beneath her. She was on her side, both of her hands held in a tight grip.
Her head was still groggy, but as her eyes opened, they clearly reflected the beaming face of Shawn Monroe. ’If it weren’t for the dull ache in her stomach, her first move would have been to grab a knife and kill him!’
But she couldn’t.
Not only did her stomach ache, but she also had no strength. To make matters worse, Shawn Monroe still held her hands in a death grip, like an iron vise, making it impossible for her to struggle free...
Just as she was lost in thought, Shawn Monroe walked in. He seemed to be in a very good mood as he asked, "How are you feeling today? Is the baby giving you any trouble?"
Glancing at his smiling face, Paige Summers felt that she truly couldn’t figure him out.
During the journey, he had told her he deeply regretted letting her go back then, and now he was going to make up for it.
He said it with such self-righteousness, as if she were his property to begin with!
It left Paige Summers speechless, able to do nothing but call him a "lunatic."
Of course, words were useless.
He was clearly dead set on kidnapping her.
For the past few days, as she started to feel a little better, she had been constantly mulling over the entire situation.
From the looks of it, this couldn’t have been a spur-of-the-moment decision; it was clearly premeditated. But as for how she was taken from the base, there were still many things she couldn’t figure out.
She completely ignored Shawn Monroe’s question. He, however, didn’t seem the least bit awkward and instead sat down beside her with a smile. "You need to rest well for the baby’s sake. Don’t overthink things."
Every time he acted like this, it made Paige Summers’s skin crawl, giving her the feeling that he had truly gone mad. And yet, he handled everything else so methodically, showing no signs of mental instability.
’The change in this man is just too drastic!’
She and he had never been lovers.
In fact, she had hardly ever been pleasant to him.
Back in The Dead City, he had assaulted her twice, and neither attempt had ended well for him. The first time she had tied him up, and the second time Marcus Monroe had stopped him.
It was safe to say he had never truly liked her.
’It was nothing more than a desire for conquest.’
And that wasn’t to mention all the times afterward, whether in The Dead City or Central City, when they had practically tried to kill each other...
’Having a brush with death and suddenly realizing she was his one true love? She would never believe such a stupid story!’
’Was it for the grain, then?’
’But she had already promised him the seeds. There was absolutely no need to pull a stunt like this!’
’Or, in the worst-case scenario, he wanted to take revenge on her.’
’But if that were the case, why would he be feeding her well and taking such good care of her?’
’To hold her hostage?’
’That didn’t seem right either...’
Perhaps from overthinking, Paige Summers felt a sharp throb in her head.
She frowned involuntarily.
Shawn Monroe’s smile vanished instantly. "Headache?"
As he spoke, he leaned over and began to massage her head.
Paige Summers closed her eyes in annoyance, but she had to admit that his massage did ease her headache.
Shawn Monroe sighed softly. "Sorry, I used too strong a dose of the drug back then."
The corner of Paige Summers’s mouth twitched.
"Speaking of the drug, when did you start planting it?"
Shawn Monroe’s hands paused for a moment before he chuckled. "From the very beginning! I know you’re an expert in this field, so I was extremely careful. Each time, I just got a tiny bit of powder onto your clothes. The last time, I used a catalyst to activate it."
’No wonder...’
’It wasn’t a poison, so my body had no reaction.’
Paige Summers let out a quiet breath. After a long moment, she said, "I want to know, how is Bloodfall Base?"
"It’s fine," Shawn Monroe answered bluntly. "I didn’t have time to get tangled up with them. You were my target!"
Paige Summers’s lips curled into a sneer. "Me, or your planting methods?"
Shawn Monroe’s hands stopped moving. She opened her eyes at the same time, meeting his inscrutable smile.
