Are There Only Demonesses Left in the Cultivation Realm?
Chapter 85 - 82: Three-Life FruitChapter 85: Chapter 82: Three-Life Fruit
Following the guidance of the spirit tablet.
Mei Zhaozhao did indeed find an empty house.
The lantern had turned completely white.
Nether Qi swirled through the streets. Numerous phantoms drifted past, clinging to the fog—silent, yet their presence was immense.
"Saintess."
Mei Zhaozhao acknowledged her. "Let’s rest."
She was wrapped in a black robe, her expression hidden from view.
Wang Lian asked, "The Three-Life Tree is about to appear. Will you be taking action, Saintess?"
Mei Zhaozhao shook her head. "If you want one, you can go and get it yourself."
Her talent was exceptional, so she had no need for a Three-Life Fruit. Wang Lian, however, did.
Mei Zhaozhao added, "The Three-Life Tree probably won’t manifest until tomorrow. Don’t wander off. If you go out at night, even I won’t be able to save you."
Wang Lian nodded. "Saintess, about Xiao Hai..."
"Don’t be too harsh on him. He is, after all, the last of Xiao Qingfeng’s bloodline."
"I wouldn’t do that to him. The decree left by the Chang’an Daoist is still in effect. Draining someone to death is an offense punishable by beheading."
The Hehuan Sect wasn’t a primary target of his reforms, and the Chang’an Daoist himself had vanished five hundred years ago, but the decree he left behind was still being followed.
This wasn’t because the Daoist Sect still existed.
Rather, the people of the Hehuan Sect discovered that letting someone willingly offer up their magic was far better than draining them to death. It even earned them a good reputation. In recent years, the Hehuan Sect’s standing had actually improved. As a result, some Cultivators had even begun to approach the sect of their own accord.
The Daoist Sect couldn’t figure it out.
But everyone has their own path. If it’s consensual, then so be it.
Mei Zhaozhao composed herself and gazed at the sky.
The night sky of the Netherworld was shrouded in a dense fog, and an unknowable, screeching sound reached her ears.
The Hehuan Sect Saintess, who had not yet entered the Red Dust, was thinking about a man.
To be more precise.
She was thinking about Lu Changyuan.
Very few people knew the details of what had happened in the Glazed Dynasty. She was one of them.
Xue Yanluo had left Upper Jade Capital. While others didn’t know who had delivered that sword strike, she, Mei Zhaozhao, knew. She had been on the other side of Upper Jade Capital, watching as Lu Changyuan split the heavens with a single slash.
’How could someone like that come to the Netherworld?’
Aboard the whale, Mei Zhaozhao had deliberately approached Lu Changyuan, only to be astonished to find the Little Ancestor of the Compassionate Palace at his side.
This made her even more terrified of Lu Changyuan’s identity.
’Fortunately, the young man seems easy enough to talk to, and I have no conflict of interest with him.’
The first principle of the Hehuan Sect...
...never make an enemy of someone who looks powerful. If possible, let them know your skills in... serving others.
Mei Zhaozhao had never practiced these "skills," nor did she intend to. So, she could only toss a Dharma tome to the young man. She had a feeling he was going to be... quite taxed in the future.
’Consider it building good karma.’
Mei Zhaozhao picked up Xiao Qingfeng’s spirit tablet and hung it in the main hall. Nether Qi swept through the room, and in the next moment, three incense sticks appeared in her hand.
"I hope you still remember old ties."
The incense ignited and was placed before the spirit tablet.
~~~~~~~~~~
Lu Changyuan touched his cheek.
It was still a little damp.
The dream faded. He had dreamt again of his past in the Netherworld.
The lanterns had turned red. The second day in the Netherworld had arrived.
"Since you’re awake, you should get up, Young Master Lu."
’So soft.’
Lu Changyuan looked up to see the maiden’s fine figure and exquisite face. He said, "Did I fall asleep on the Third Princess’s lap again?"
The maiden shook her head. "This time, I moved your head to rest here. I saw you weren’t sleeping well. It seemed you were having a nightmare."
’It probably wasn’t a nightmare.’
’If my memories of traversing the Netherworld are a nightmare,’ Lu Changyuan thought, ’then the Chang’an Daoist’s entire path of Cultivation was nothing but nightmares.’
"How much longer are you going to lie there, Young Master Lu?"
"That depends on how long the Third Princess is willing to let me."
Lu Changyuan narrowed his eyes slightly.
Su Youwan didn’t speak.
The air fell silent for a moment.
Lu Changyuan watched Su Youwan with curiosity, but the maiden’s face was blank, as if she were in a state of Meditation.
’Is she really going to let me lie here indefinitely?’
’Weird.’
Lu Changyuan had no choice but to sit up. "We should go take a look outside, Third Princess."
Perhaps it was his imagination.
Lu Changyuan thought he saw the Silver-haired Maiden smile.
The two of them left the small house. Opening the door, they found the street filled with Spirits, bustling with a cold, eerie liveliness.
On the grayish-brown street, the Spirits seemed to be going about their daily work. Illusory figures came and went, just like real people.
Here was a butcher’s stall, over there one selling cosmetics.
Unfortunately, they were all just phantoms.
"Young Master Lu, why are all these Spirits making the same sound at you?"
The Third Princess found it strange. The Spirits seemed to recognize Lu Changyuan, and they were all calling out to him with the same vague, peculiar syllable.
"Don’t worry about it. Let’s go to the Royal Palace."
The denizens of the Netherworld have their own language.
After all, the Spirits here were once members of all kinds of races—some were human, others Demon.
Lu Changyuan could understand it.
He could understand those vague, strange monosyllabic cries. They were all calling out his nickname in the Netherworld.
"Yu."
Lu Changyuan himself didn’t know where the nickname came from.
’It was probably an honorific they gave me after I beat them all up back when I was just a rookie.’
It was bizarre, now that he thought about it.
After he beat them up, this crowd of Netherworld Spirits sensed his immense strength and tried to make him stay. They wanted him to replace the Nether Monarch and rule the Netherworld.
It had a strange "you beat us, so now you’re the boss" kind of vibe.
But back then, Lu Changyuan had only wanted to leave, so he paid them no mind.
"Young Master Lu is very familiar with this place?"
"Yes. I was here for a long time."
Su Youwan said softly, "But the Netherworld only opens for less than half a month at a time. If you don’t leave, you’re trapped inside until the next opening. Based on the density of the Nether Qi here, even a Sixth Realm Kai Yang cultivator would be worn down into one of Nether City’s Spirits after a hundred years."
Lu Changyuan simply said, "Some people can always manage to endure."
As Lu Changyuan spoke, the entire Netherworld began to tremble.
Both of them whipped their heads toward the sky.
A tree seemed to be slowly taking shape in the gray-black sky.
"The Three-Life Tree."
In the sky above East City, a colossal, intertwined tree was visible. It seemed to have emerged from the Netherworld itself, a fusion of three different trees that ultimately formed a composite of bone and Moyu.
The tree spanned both the eastern and western cities, so it was visible from every angle.
The past, the present, the future... or perhaps one’s past life, this life, the next life... Similar Thoughts eventually became specks of starlight. Surrounded by Nether Qi, they finally transformed into breathtaking fruits.
The Three-Life Fruit.
Lu Changyuan retracted his gaze. "Is the Three-Life Tree appearing this early?"
The effect of the Three-Life Fruit was rather simple and direct. Whoever ate it would live through three new lives within an illusion. This gave a Cultivator three lifetimes’ worth of illusory memories to use for their Enlightenment.
For those of the Fourth Realm Megrez Realm, struggling at the threshold of the Fifth Realm, this fruit would almost certainly grant them some form of insight.
