„Before I begin, let’s go back inside. I’m completely exhausted."

Valerian nodded and began to walk back to the cave. As Arthur tried to stand up, his legs began to wobble and he was about to fall, but Valerian teleported next to him. Putting his arm under Arthur’s shoulders, he supported him and they walked back inside the cave.

Letting Arthur back down next to the campfire that was still burning, Valerian walked to a spot across from Arthur and sat down cross-legged.

„So now, please explain, because that was really cool."

The unmasked anticipation and excitement in Valerian’s voice was a bit surprising to Arthur, but he began nonetheless.

„It’s a [Skill] called [Elemental Ascension]. I got it from a quest issued by the system, and honestly, the sheer potential of the [Skill] is on the level of a unique skill. The [Skill] lets me enter a state of resonance with an element that I have an affinity for. Right now, I can only use the first stage of it. Like you saw, it greatly enhances my body. But afterwards, I get a huge backlash."

Valerian nodded but also looked at him with slight confusion.

„But why didn’t you use a fire form? Wouldn’t that have been better against an ice wyvern?"

„Yes, you are right, but the thing is that I have to unlock each form and then independently level them up. So right now, I only have access to the lightning form. While the form gives me explosive speed and makes it so my perception is greatly enhanced, the backlash causes a head-splitting headache."

Satisfied with the explanation, Valerian turned to the next matter.

„You said that you are exhausted even though I healed you. When do you think you’ll be back to 100%?"

Arthur’s face dropped in disappointment.

„It will probably take 2 days. Normally it’s 5 days, but with your healing, I should be back sooner."

’Two days... this will be pretty boring.’

Not really excited for the long wait, a thought came to Valerian’s mind.

„Do you have any quests currently from your system?"

„Yes, actually. It’s a quest that I purposely held my breakthrough to S- back for."

Valerian looked at him with surprise. If not for that quest, he would have been the same rank as Valerian, which is insane considering all the boons Valerian was born with and got later, like the physique. And yet, Arthur’s unique skill made him almost catch up, if not reach S- before Valerian, if not for the quest.

„What kind of quest makes you hold back a breakthrough?"

Arthur’s eyes began to shine in excitement and greed.

„It’s an insane quest. I have to kill something that is an entire rank above me."

’Now it makes sense that he would hold back the breakthrough.’

The gaps between ranks increased exponentially, so the difference between someone at A+ and S+ is smaller than S- and SS-. Still, it is an almost impossible gap for a normal person, but if you have such a strong unique skill like [Akashic Records] helping you, it becomes possible.

„What is the reward for such a quest?"

Valerian was curious as to what kind of reward the system would give.

„It’s a bloodline, but what bloodline, I have no idea. It just says [??? Rank Bloodline], but it has to be insane with how difficult the quest is."

„Getting a bloodline just like that, and probably a powerful one. Tsk, life is just not fair."

Arthur looked at Valerian with a blank face.

’The fuck you mean „life is just not fair"? You are even more overpowered than I am. I’m starting to doubt that I’m the protagonist here!’

But he kept his thoughts hidden as the exhaustion of using the skill hit him hard.

„I will sleep. I don’t know if you need to sleep, but I can’t stay awake any longer."

Valerian nodded.

„Sure, I will keep watch. Goodnight."

„Night."

Arthur laid back on the hard stone floor, but in his exhausted state, even the uneven floor felt like he was sleeping on clouds, and sleep took him in seconds.

Valerian watched as Arthur fell asleep instantly with a sigh.

’He posed a good question: do I need to sleep? Physically, probably not, as I don’t need to eat, but I think it’s best to sleep every few days for my mental health.’

With that, he just began to meditate to pass the time until Arthur woke up. Valerian recapped what had happened in just the short span of 24 hours.

He fought a SS- rank being, acquired an overpowered new physique, and combined his two races into a single powerful one that has never existed in the universe. Also, there was the God seed. He didn’t really know why he got it, was it because he created a new race or because of his physique that made him almost immortal? Valerian didn’t know.

The next thing that happened that was even more surprising was that he made a friend. What are the chances that a boy his age would be in the voidwoods at the exact time he needed help? And on top of that, the boy was also a reincarnated soul from a different universe, who could potentially keep up with Valerian’s growth with this strange system.

Fate was truly weird, and all Valerian could do right now was continue to swim in its all-powerful currents, letting himself be guided to places he had to be. But there was also a stubborn pride inside him wanting to refuse fate and its preplanned path, yet this small pride was far too weak to go against fate, which has existed before the universe itself.

Lost in his meditation, Valerian didn’t realize how fast the time passed, as he was jolted out of his meditation by the sound of Arthur yawning.

Opening his galaxy-like purple eyes, Valerian looked at the crimson-eyed boy in front of him. He looked like shit. The exhaustion from the [Skill] was written all over his face.

„Good morning."

Arthur turned to Valerian, who was sitting in the same spot he did when Arthur fell asleep.

„Morning. So, do you have anything to do while we wait?"

During his wait, Valerian actually thought of a way to pass the time until Arthur was back to 100%.

„Yes, I will teach you about magic."

Arthur looked at Valerian like he had just grown a second pair of horns.

„And why would you do that?"

„Yesterday during your fight, I was watching the way you utilize mana and form your spells, and to make it short: you fucking suck at magic."

A vein popped on Arthur’s forehead at the insult.

„The fuck you mean I suck? I’m quite good at magic. Back in my world, I would be a god among mortals and all the women would flock to me!"

Valerian’s expression didn’t change. He looked at Arthur with an expressionless face.

„Are you still in your old world?"

„No, of course not. What are you getting at?"

Now Arthur was a bit annoyed at the expressionless Valerian.

„Now you are in Eldoria, a place where mana is everything. You may have lived here for 15 years, but your mindset is still that of a person from a manaless world. To you, magic is something new and cool, but the people living here never knew a life without mana. Where you have to think „how do I use my magic best here", a person from Eldoria will just do it, because it’s within our DNA."

After Valerian finished, Arthur turned quiet, digesting all the information he had just got, and the conclusion he came to was: Valerian was right. He still thought of magic as something new, like in anime or novels. He tried to use spells he saw or read about, but that is not how magic works here. There are no fixed spells, no formulas one has to remember to cast a fireball. It’s all just elemental manipulation. If he lets go of the boxed way of thinking, just how much stronger could he become?

„Let me ask you, Arthur von Pendragon: what is mana?"

It was a simple question, but Arthur knew who asked, and that gave it so many more layers. He saw Valerian’s status and his title, [Child of Mana]. There was only one in the entire universe, and he had the opportunity to be taught by the person with the highest mana affinity in the whole universe!

So Arthur began to think about the question, but no matter what he could think of, nothing felt right. So, completely out of ideas, he just chose to pick the simplest answer.

„Mana is the energy that fuels magic."

It was an answer that a child would give, but in a sense, Arthur was like a child in terms of magic. Sure, his memories and lifetime helped him in understanding magic more than a child, but the mind of a person from a manaless world can’t really compete with a child that has never known anything but mana.

Valerian listened to the answer. He didn’t make fun of Arthur or mock him for his simple answer, because he knew that he really thought about the question and could arrive at an answer, so he chose the simplest so that Valerian could correct him.

„The answer is..."

Arthur leaned in closer, eager to hear the answer the [Child of Mana] had for this question.

„Mana is... everything."
