Flying above the Voidwoods, Valerian kept his spatial perception to the max range to make sure he wouldn’t miss any monster in the vicinity.
They have now been traveling for 2 hours after exiting the pocket dimension, and it was nearing midday.
During the flight, Valerian and Arthur didn’t really talk as Valerian was focused on scanning the surroundings, which took most of his thinking power. Arthur, on the other hand, was still searching through the seemingly endless amount of [Skills] provided by the system.
It was a peaceful time, well, as peaceful as it could be considering where they were, but even this peaceful atmosphere high in the air ended as Valerian picked something up at the edge of his perception.
Curious and hopeful that the search finally ended, he didn’t want to waste more time and folded the space around both of them to appear where he felt something happening.
Arthur was surprised by the sudden teleport, but before he could look to Valerian for an explanation, he saw the landscape in front of him and his heart started beating wildly.
Because the place where the endless forest was supposed to be was an elemental wasteland. Trees have been uprooted and thrown around; some were burned and still burning, while others were frozen in ice or cut cleanly in half by wind attacks.
"What happened here?"
"This thing happened."
Valerian pointed his finger in front of them into the wasteland. As Arthur followed his finger, he finally noticed the culprit.
It didn’t have a fixed body, constantly shifting in proportion and shape; its body looked like it was made from pure elemental force. One moment it was a burning fire spirit the size of a 3-story building, the next it turned into a tsunami of water drowning the lands in a never-ending flood.
"People call them elemental spirits. They are born in places where large amounts of different elemental mana gets discharged over a long period of time. Like you can see, they don’t have a fixed form; they constantly shift between the elements. It’s perfect for you to learn to make magic your own."
Arthur looked at the elemental spirit with a gulp as a bead of sweat ran down the side of his face. Arthur knew that fighting against an S+ was never going to be easy; still, he thought that with his system and all the advantages he had, it was possible. But this thing showed him just how strong an S+ can be.
The mana rolling off it in thick waves was suffocating, in no way comparable to the ice wyvern he fought. Even though it was S- and this monster is S+, the difference was like night and day.
Seeing his friend be so nervous, Valerian put a hand on his shoulder.
"Don’t worry, you are the amazing harem protagonist with the super OP cheat system. As if this blob of mana could do any harm to you."
It was a crude attempt to comfort him and give him more confidence, but strangely Valerian’s words ignited a flame of determination inside Arthur.
"You’re right, I am the amazing harem protagonist, and I won’t lose to this mud puddle of mana."
Valerian smiled and began to lower Arthur to the ground, while staying mid-air and observing the fight, and if needed save Arthur—even though he was very reluctant to do so, as Arthur needed this and just sweeping in and helping would only be counterproductive.
When Arthur landed on the ground, he took a deep breath and activated one of his [Skills].

The thing that made Arthur worry the most was the Mana and Intelligence stat. It wasn’t just something that threw magic at the opponent and then hoped it would die. It could think and strategize, and it sure as hell had the mana to also just throw magic at the opponent if it felt like it.
Also, the fact that it had access to every element was extremely worrying, and then there were the traits. Unlike more intelligent races, monsters had traits; they described their racial abilities, and the ones of the elemental were pretty much self-explanatory.
’Damn it, thinking about how strong it is won’t make this easier.’
Arthur took the twin daggers out of his system inventory and walked towards the spirit, mentally preparing himself for the hardest fight of his life up till now.
Once Arthur got within around 100 meters of the spirit, it noticed him and turned around, well, it didn’t really "turn around" since it didn’t have a fixed form, it doesn’t have a front side and back side. It more like adjusted its form to fight Arthur, who came from a different direction than it was moving before.
The spirit didn’t wait for him to come any closer. Its body changed into a form that was made from blue lightning and instantly attacked with a lightning bolt. Arthur readied himself to dash to the side and dodge the bolt, but as it got closer, the bolt turned into a flaming explosion of fire.
Arthur was surprised at the sudden elemental change but channeled his wind element to enhance his body to move away.
But the spirit didn’t stop at the fire explosion, as from the earth below Arthur, walls made from earth mana emerged, cutting off his escape route and trapping him.
Arthur used lightning to break the earth walls, but as they shattered, they turned into metal spikes that all homed in on him, wind gathered around them enhancing their speed even more.
’Shit!’
Desperate, Arthur activated one of the [Skills] he bought in the system shop.
[Elemental Barrier: Earth]
A round shield of earth surrounded him, shielding him from the incoming spikes. When they collided with the earth shield, they managed to break through but lost all their momentum afterwards.
But the spirit didn’t stop, and the metal spikes that were sticking into his earth shield began to liquefy, turning into water in an attempt to drown Arthur within his own earth shield.
When Arthur realized what the spirit was trying, he immediately canceled his [Skill] and the earth ball disappeared.
Before he could land on the ground, the water around him turned into ice, trapping his feet.
’You’ve got to be kidding me!’
The endless barrage and change in elements was what made an elemental spirit such a dangerous monster. Since it was created by elemental mana itself, it could weave and combine the elements unlike anyone else.
Valerian watched the whole fight from above and he had to admit, even as the [Child of Mana], the elemental spirit was currently more proficient with elemental magic. The way it seamlessly changed the nature of its attacks made it an unpredictable opponent. During the entire fight, it didn’t move from its spot, and that wasn’t very surprising. They were pure casters after all, completely forfeiting any kind of physical strength for overwhelming magic.
Valerian also saw the moment when Arthur resorted to using one of his system [Skills], and he couldn’t help but feel disappointed that Arthur resorted to the system instead of finding his own way of getting out of the situation.
But now that he was trapped in the ice and the spirit was already preparing its next attack, Valerian got incredibly curious how Arthur would get out of this tricky situation.
Down below, Arthur looked at the spirit, nervous as to what elemental attack would rain down on him next. But what he saw made him both confused and left a nervous feeling that screamed at him to run.
The spirit was in its fire form and it was just standing there, completely still, not moving. The only movement was the constant dancing of the fire, but the large body itself didn’t move an inch.
’What is it doing??’
Beads of sweat trickled down the side of his face as he channeled his fire affinity to melt the ice binding him. It was incredibly sturdy, so it took a while and didn’t melt immediately.
’Come on! I have to move!’
The unease kept increasing and more sweat trickled down his forehead. Then it hit him. The sweat, yes, he was nervous, but the amount of sweat didn’t just come from the nervousness. It was getting hot, incredibly hot.
With each second the temperature kept rising, and now the fire body of the spirit was making sense.
’It’s casting a fire spell, but I can’t see anything. This is not good.’
The ice around his feet didn’t suddenly melt faster just because the temperature was rising. It was like the ice, which was created by the spirit, was immune to the fire magic of the spirit.
As Arthur continued to try to melt the ice, he noticed a glow coming from above. First, he thought that the sun was shining on him, but paired with the rising temperature, he couldn’t help but look up.
And what he saw caused pure despair to flood his heart. High above, what looked like a ceiling made from fire was falling downwards. It looked like hell itself was descending onto the Voidwoods. Faced with the helpless situation, Arthur was thinking about giving up, that if he were about to die, Valerian would somehow save him.
But he caught himself in this thinking because this was his fight. If he can’t win here, he might as well just die. What’s the point of reincarnating to then give up when a situation seemed bad?
Defiance burned inside Arthur like a bonfire, burning away all doubt and fear. Along with the negative emotions, something else ignited, something deep within him.
Arthur instinctively knew what that was, and without hesitation, he spoke.
